Chapter 461: Chapter 461: First Enhancement
"You think this thing is a plug, and you're a phone? This isn't something you can just stick in your ass to charge up!" Solomon couldn't help but mock. His words were so harsh that little Lorna jumped up and punched him in the face. So, he stopped joking around and spoke in his usual serious tone. "This thing is powerful and dangerous; it's not something to be used casually. And since someone has tampered with it, we must be cautious when using it."
"How do you plan to use it?" Lorna glanced at the Maximoff siblings behind her. Wanda and Pietro both shook their heads, indicating that they had no recollection. They only remembered that the researchers had asked them to touch the gem, and then they blacked out. When they woke up, they found themselves with superpowers.
Wanda had it slightly better, but Pietro's uncontrolled abilities had him crashing around in his cell, leaving him covered in bruises. Hydra had installed cushioning pads on the walls of Pietro's room and wrapped his bed in thick sponge. The researchers even prescribed him a full month's worth of bone-healing medication. Every day, he had to endure the pain while training his powers. This wasn't out of human compassion but rather concern for an experimental subject, as the Maximoff siblings were the only two successful test subjects in the program.
Not everyone could come into contact with an Infinity Stone so easily.
"This scepter enhances mental power, which in turn taps into the potential of the body and soul. Intelligence, soul, and body influence one another. Granting the mind, excavating the soul, and transcending the physical body—that is the function of this scepter." Since he had taken on the role of a teacher, Solomon wouldn't pass up any opportunity to educate. This foundational knowledge was especially crucial for Wanda Maximoff.
Self-taught sorcerers often lacked fundamental knowledge. They typically only went back to study academic theories after achieving some success. While such theoretical knowledge might not directly help with spellcasting, it was essential for a sorcerer's overall growth.
Solomon picked up the scepter and chanted a long, obscure incantation at its head.
Wanda stretched her neck forward, trying to catch what he was saying, but she couldn't make out a word. The incantation had been deliberately obscured through adjusted pronunciation. A novice spellcaster could only sense the invisible waves stirred by the spell, all converging upon the scepter. She saw energy flicker and vanish—something invisible to ordinary people. The blue crystal at the scepter's head cracked, and brilliant yellow light seeped through the fissures. Solomon temporarily suppressed the arcane magic surrounding the Mind Stone, allowing it to reveal its true power.
Infinity Stones possessed a will of their own. This was recorded in the books of Kamar-Taj, where the Ancient One had documented similar findings while researching the Time and Space Stones. The Maximoff siblings were chosen by the Mind Stone, which was why their powers had been awakened. Solomon merely facilitated the process, letting the Mind Stone recognize Lorna's potential as well.
The sorcerer made a gesture toward Lorna and murmured another convoluted spell before lightly tapping the scepter's head against her forehead.
"Just like that? I don't feel—Shit! Solomon! My eyes…!" Lorna went from calm to panicked in an instant, clutching Solomon's sleeve in distress. Her vision darkened, yet flashes of shimmering light rippled outward like waves. "I see it… This must be electricity and magnetic fields. I think I can control them…"
"Focus, Lorna." Solomon continued pressing the scepter against her forehead. "Recall what you've learned. You're far beyond just bending spoons now."
The Leviathan beast, suspended by thick iron chains, suddenly trembled. The chains groaned, small cracks forming in their iron rings. The metal shell covering its bio-mass exterior began to liquefy, cascading down like countless tiny waterfalls. At the same time, its congealed, chemically treated blood began to flow again. The thick, iron-rich, foul-smelling fluid dripped down along with the metallic streams.
To Wanda, the sight resembled the floating islands she had read about in childhood fairy tales.
Lorna released Solomon's sleeve and attempted to control her powers on her own.
No girl trained by Athena was weak. Lorna was especially skilled with the spear, having endured injuries nearly as often as Solomon himself. Because of this, he was confident in enhancing and stabilizing her abilities. Soon, through sheer willpower, she managed to gain control over the sudden surge of power. The thick chains ceased their collapse, and the damaged iron rings were repaired with Chitauri metal. It was imperfect and difficult, but she had done it.
"I did it!" she cheered. "I really did it! You promised to take me on an adventure!"
"That depends on whether you can stabilize this power and keep it from fading. This was merely a temporary enhancement of your mental strength." Solomon nodded in satisfaction and withdrew the Mind Stone's scepter. "Besides, have you noticed? You're as tall as me now."
"Ah!" Floating in mid-air via magnetic force, Lorna lost control and dropped to the ground. The Leviathan beast's liquefied metal instantly solidified again. The creature now looked like a hot dog drenched in melted cheese, while the surrounding metal, affected by natural gravity, formed sharp spikes. The stench of oil-soaked blood dripped slowly from the edges.
"Keep practicing. This is just your first enhancement. Once your power stabilizes, I'll take you back." Solomon set the scepter aside. He needed a legitimate reason to take it, and now wasn't the time. "I promised to take you on an adventure," he said to Lorna. "Do you remember what that dead Celestial was made of?"
"Metal!" Pietro blurted out, glancing around. "What? I was paying attention."
"Exactly, metal. I believe you can control that big guy." Solomon smirked. "My Antarctic mining team is about to set out. Before that, you need to practice your abilities. I'll take you there to dig it up."
"What about us?" Wanda asked hurriedly. "When will you start teaching me?"
"I already am, Wanda Maximoff," Solomon replied. "Spellcasting isn't simple. You can wield your magic like a hammer, smashing everything in sight, or you can use it to create something delicate. Remember the spell I used when I got you all out? It was a spell that influenced the mind. Try repeating the root word of that incantation in front of me and implant a simple magical suggestion in this unconscious researcher. When he wakes up, he'll follow your intended action. Remember what I told you…"
"Mind, soul, and body," Wanda muttered, extending her hand toward the unconscious researcher.
"Mind, soul, and body…"
"What are you doing, Wanda?" Pietro asked, confused. But Wanda followed Solomon's instructions exactly.
"Don't lose control—I don't want to see this poor guy grow four extra deformed arms. Good, I can see your magic. Watch the root word carefully. Magic is an art, and right now, you're just a barbarian swinging a hammer, likely to smash your own head." At the same time, Solomon cast a spell to erase part of the Hydra researcher's memory. "Let's head back. This was just the first lesson, Wanda Maximoff. Your magic has innate properties—you must uncover them. Nothing in this world is free, and magic is no exception. But you must always remember one word: equivalent exchange."
"W-What does that mean?" Wanda's red-glowing eyes were filled with confusion.
"Magic demands a price," Solomon glanced at Pietro, his words carrying a deeper meaning. "You'd better think carefully about what you're willing to give and prepare accordingly. There are many ways to pay the price, so choose wisely. If you refuse to pay, someone will come to collect it, and by then, you won't have a say in how."
