Chapter 4: IV: Tethereds
Judith, having been broken beyond comprehension, had followed behind the prince without uttering so much as a single word. She didn't care about anything anymore, as she found she was going to die anyway.
Be it earth or in the eastern fantasy novel she loved so dearly, it didn't matter. At the end of the day, she was going to die.
Of course, this thought didn't stop Judith from thinking on how she even got here in the first place. Perhaps she was reincarnated into a fantasy world that looked and was similar to the one she read about.
'With the exact same names and scenario?' Judith thought, then immediately ruled out this option.
The other explanation she had was that perhaps, the novel was written by some sort of god, that foresaw the happenings of another world, and then sent her into…
"Ah!" Judith had screamed after an aggressive image which felt to her as though a train rammed into her brain had surfaced.
The word 'god' kept playing on loop in her head along with the blurred image of a child, a little girl.
Within the second, the pain had subsided, and she immediately got a grip on herself.
Out of the top of her eyes, she could see that the prince had turned toward her, on account of her scream.
But being inconsiderate, he didn't stare for much longer, and had returned his gaze ahead.
After she felt she was in the clear, she went back on her thoughts, and wondered why a blurry image of a child and a single word had such an effect on her.
'Perhaps that's the answer to all of this.' She thought, just before everything faded into obscurity, when she suddenly heard a rattling emanating from beneath.
The rattle wasn't only heard by Judith as everyone had paused due to the sound.
Eyes were turned in every direction and everyone had raised their guards and kept their senses on high alert.
As uneasiness began to settle in, the sound had suddenly vanished as quickly as it came.
But with this silence, Judith realized it wasn't over.
Because this was exactly the scenario described in her novel.
At once she turned in every direction, searching frantically for Qui Lin. Because Qui Lin was about to be the target of the creature underneath them all.
Upon setting eyes on her, Judith screamed.
"Master Quanchi!"
Qui Lin, beyond astonished to hear that name, had turned to the voice to hear who would address her by that name.
Once she had set eyes on Judith, her thoughts had immediately shifted from wondering how this slave could know her secret name, to asking why she was rushing toward her whilst waving her hands.
"Get out of the way, it's right beneath you!" Judith had screamed at the top of her lungs. Praying that Qui Lin would get out of the way in time.
But against all hopes and wishes, Qui Lin and her mount had been hoisted into the air. Underneath her, a snake-like Parabeast, bigger and longer than six elephants stacked on top one another had burst through the sand whilst widening its mouth so Qui Lin and her mount would fall into it.
Unfortunately for the Parabeast, before gravity had the opportunity to work its magic. Qui Lin had summoned three transparent rings around her right arm, three transparent rings with symbols etched onto them. These symbols began to glow when she pointed it toward the mouth of the Parabeast.
Within the second, she had opened up a vortex inches above the Parabeast's mouth. A vortex in which Qui Lin and her mount had fallen into.
No more than a second had passed before the vortex had reappeared a little far back, so Qui Lin and her mount would crash onto the sand rather safely.
Judith, having seen Qui Lin was safe, turned her immediate attention to the direction she had initially been running toward the whole time. Which unfortunately, was now the location where a hundred foot snake-like Parabeast stood, sticking out of the sand.
It fixated its yellow blood thirsty eyes on her, as it rattled its tongue.
Judith, now sure she had met her end, decided to give up and let the Parabeast feast on her. But upon deciding on this thought, she still found herself looking for every possible way to escape, no matter how futile it seemed.
But luckily, she didn't have to look any further, as a sudden and powerful blast of fire into side of the Parabeast's head had created enough of a distraction for her to escape.
Or at least that is what she had thought, because as soon as she made a 180 and began to sprint away, she saw at the corner of her eye, the Parabeast jetting through the cloud of smoke that had covered it and making its way toward her, mouth wide open.
With no other option present at the moment, Judith had shut her eyes and waited for the inevitable to happen.
But all the while running as fast as her feet could carry her.
Within the second, just as she felt the snake only a breath away from her, the ground underneath her feet had disappeared and when she had opened her eyes, she discovered she was falling into a black void that seemed to stretch on forever.
But Judith didn't get to fall for too long, when a vortex had opened up inside the void, which revealed a circular window of the night's sky.
When she fell into the vortex, she found herself hoisted into the air, only to be flung back onto the sand.
By the time Judith came to, she found herself a distance away from the Parabeast and the fight in general.
Judith knew in an instant by the colour of the vortex - that being purple - that she was saved by Qui Lin.
The Parabeast, being unsuccessful in feasting on Judith, had turned its sights to the foray of warriors that had gathered around it.
Warriors each with a magical creature by their side with glowing streaks across their bodies.
As the warriors gathered, Judith got onto her feet, admiring them all. "Tethereds." She couldn't help but gasp the name given to these warriors.
In the novel, Tethereds were described as the best line of defense against Parabeasts and some of the most powerful beings in existence, besides Cultivators.
The name Tethered had been given to any warrior who was able to bond with magical creatures known as Lergobeasts.
This bond would result in the channeling of a Lergobeasts powers into a Tethered. Thus, granting the Tethered magical powers to fend off the Parabeasts. Said powers had been given the name Alkalis.
Judith had always admired the Tethereds, but hated one fatal flaw about them.
One of the Tethereds fighting had blasted the Parabeast with lightning, which had missed its mark.
Within the same second, a bolt of lightning had appeared before the Tethered, which struck him there and then.
This was their fatal flaw. Recoil, as it was officially named in the novel.
If a Tethered were to use offensive Alkalis, it would return to them ten fold. And if this Recoil was not evaded, that would mean the end of that Tethered.
Without turning to their dead comrade, the Tethereds began to rain down fire and thunder onto the Parabeast, whilst trying to evade the Recoil of their attacks.
But as Judith saw this assault, she couldn't help but feel a sense of dread, which she didn't understand.
Then, she remembered that these assaults would only drive the Parabeast back into the sand, where it would pick them off one at a time.
But before she could speak, enough damage had already been dealt and the Parabeast had burrowed into the sand.
After which cheers of victory began to fill the air.
Judith on the other hand remained frozen, because she knew this was far from over.
Qui Lin, whose gaze was fixated on Judith, had climbed onto her Lergobeast and proceeded to make her way toward Judith, eager to speak to her.
But Judith on the other hand was hating herself for having this haze in her memory.
She knew there was something she could do, but why she couldn't remember was a mystery to her.
Yet this didn't stop her from thinking and racking her brain.
"Qui Lin, that Parabeast was unrecorded." The prince had said to Qui Lin made her way past him.
"We'll talk about it later, I have something I need to investigate." Qui Lin said with a flat tone, as her thoughts were completely fixated on this strange Western slave.
By the time Qui Lin had made her way to Judith's side, Judith had already remembered what had to be done to save as many people as she could. And before Qui Lin could speak to Judith, she had bolted forward, like a madwoman.
Leaving Qui Lin to wonder to herself what had possessed the slave.
Judith on the other hand, was fixated on one of the floating carriages filled with treasures and gold, all the while praying she could make it in time.
