Chapter 12: Page 12: Bad Luck
"What a Horrible Day"
It was a stormy day with torrential rain, so almost no one ventured outside, except for the guards who were obligated to patrol the city.
'This type of storm reminds me of when the Shout Storm Call was used, though here lightning doesn't strike the guards.'
The storm clouds were very active, with lightning striking frequently.
I couldn't use destructive magic because I thought it would be too dangerous if one of the orphans got too close and got hurt.
"This is so boring."
"You're right. I miss going outside."
The children began complaining as usual, full of energy. They hadn't been like this before because Grelod never let them do anything.
While they were grumbling about having nothing to do, I decided to use Telekinesis to test what I could do with it.
Unlike in the game, where it was only useful for pulling or pushing objects, I could also apply enough pressure to crush an object. This gave me more versatility with this magic, though it consumed a significant amount of mana.
I used Mage Light, which stuck to the wall, and it seemed to shine brighter than Candlelight.
"Lun, how do you do that?"
One of the children was staring at the light I had created.
"With Alteration Magic."
"And how does it work?"
"Well..."
I tried to come up with an explanation, but all I could think of was that it was because of Alteration Magic, which didn't seem sufficient.
"...that's a good question. I'd need to read up on it to explain it properly. All I know is that I can make a light."
"Oh... Can you make more lights?"
I used Mage Light again, but it consumed too much mana. Then I thought, "What if it's not a single large light but several smaller ones?" With that idea in mind, I created another light, but this time I split it into tiny spheres that floated up to the ceiling.
The lights stuck to the ceiling, forming a strange source of illumination.
"Wow!"
The children gathered to see what I was doing, even drawing Helena's attention.
"Well, you're quite creative with your magic."
"Maybe."
The children started touching the lights, which stuck to their hands.
I ran out of mana, so the lights just stayed there until their time ran out.
'I guess magic can also be used this way.'

[Omniscient POV]
A whole week passed since the storm began, and almost no one could leave their homes.
People began questioning what was happening and why such a storm persisted.
Lun felt bored, so he continued practicing Alteration Magic.
Since he practiced so much, by the time he went to bed, he had accumulated another skill point, which he invested in Alteration.
Despite gaining that skill point, he wondered, "Why aren't my Magic, Stamina, or Health increasing?" He thought of skill points as leveling up, but none of his stats had improved, leaving him uncertain.
He speculated that they might only increase naturally: Health by getting injured and healing, Stamina by running and building endurance, and Magic by practicing spells. Though this was just his own unfounded theory.
At The Bee and Barb tavern, citizens were complaining about the storm. Most were somewhat drunk and annoyed, especially by a priest preaching his word.
"Oh, sinners! This storm is a punishment from Lady Mara for your sins! Repent of the vile sin of drunkenness! Abandon your mugs of vile liquid and accept the teachings of Kyne's servant!"
"Shut up, Maramal! You're ruining the mood!"
A Nord shouted angrily, slamming the table.
"Calm down. There's no need to get aggressive," another Nord tried to soothe him.
"This bastard won't shut up! The storm won't stop, and we can't fish because of it!"
"Maramal, enough. You've been told if you want to stay here, don't bother the customers," an Argonian said.
"Keevara, the people of Riften must understand their sins."
"That's fine, but not here. You're bothering everyone."
While the owner argued with Mara's priest, two people were conversing at a distant table.
"When will Mercer tell us to continue operating in Riften?" Brynjolf asked.
"Not until the situation calms down. No one expected the Jarl to send guards."
"All because of that fool."
"Come on, Brynjolf. We're here to relax for a moment. This all feels like a curse since Gallus death."
"Back to the curse topic again, Delvin?"
"Come on, you know it too. Ever since Karliah killed Gallus, we've only been falling into misfortune."
"Maybe, maybe."
They kept drinking to forget their problems as the storm raged throughout the Rift.
By nightfall, a woman wearing a hooded cloak entered Riften. She walked, shielding herself from the rain, until she arrived at the doors of the Honorhall Orphanage.
She entered the orphanage and removed her hood, revealing a stunningly beautiful woman with short black hair, red lipstick, and pale skin.
She headed toward the empty dining hall but was intercepted by Helena.
"Excuse me? Can I help you?" Helena asked.
"Yes, I'd like to adopt," the woman said with a smile.
"Oh, I'd love to help, but due to the storm, I can't allow adoptions, as the children might get sick. If you'd like, you can return tomorrow to meet the children until... you..."
As Helena spoke, she began to feel strange as she stared into the woman's crimson eyes.
"I'd like to adopt. Would you show me the children?" the woman repeated.
"Yes, of course. Follow me."
They entered the room where the children were preparing for bed.
"Children, come here," Helena said, clapping her hands and calling everyone.
"This lady has come to adopt. Her name is..."
Helena remained silent, not knowing the woman's name.
"Aurelia. My name is Aurelia. It's a pleasure, children."
The children stared in awe, never having seen someone with red eyes and such pale skin.
Everyone was excited about someone being adopted, except for Lun, who felt something was off about the woman.
'There's something strange about her. Those eyes and that skin...'
Aurelia scanned the children until her gaze settled on Lun.
"This little boy is charming."
She knelt to look directly at Lun.
Not trusting her, Lun realized he had seen makeup, skin, and eyes like hers before.
'Vampire!'
He quickly tried to cast a spell to attack her but froze.
"I want this child. Would you like to come with me?" Aurelia asked.
"Yes." He said in a neutral tone.
The children said their goodbyes to Lun, who remained silent, which they found odd but attributed to his usual quietness.
Within minutes, Lun was bundled up in thick clothing, and they left the Honorhall Orphanage as the storm continued to rage.
'What luck to find such a rare specimen,'
Aurelia thought, licking her lips as she contemplated her new prey.
