Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Shadows Close In
---
The evening sky cast a warm orange glow over Raven Estate, a quiet contrast to the cold, calculated hum of high-tech security systems embedded throughout the luxurious compound. At just six years old, Asher Raven was far more aware than any child his age should be. Though he played the part of the curious, clever boy, his mind was always working — analysing, absorbing, learning.
Six years had passed since his rebirth. Every morning, the sign-in system greeted him with its familiar flicker of text:
> [Daily Sign-In Complete]
Reward: $10,000 transferred
System Points +2
Occasionally, he used the system points for the Lucky Draw. The rewards weren't flashy. No fireballs, no strength enhancements, no combat skills. Only intellectual treasures: advanced programming knowledge, cryptographic algorithms, mechanical design theory, and glimpses into sciences even the brightest minds in the world had yet to fully grasp.
Nothing that could make him physically stronger — just smarter. Sharper. Quietly dangerous in a way no one suspected.
And no one knew. Not his tutors, not the estate staff, not even his legal guardians who oversaw his inheritance. He kept his abilities buried under layers of composure and quiet observation.
But something about tonight felt… wrong.
Asher sat in the garden beneath a crimson-leaved maple tree, reading a book his tutor had suggested — a dense journal on neural-lace technology. The wind was too still. The ambient noise of the estate — the soft footfalls of workers, the distant hum of security drones — had vanished.
His eyes narrowed.
Too late.
A sharp prick to the neck. His muscles froze before he could turn. Darkness closed in.
---
He awoke to the hum of a vehicle engine, the sharp sting of a headache lingering. Dim light flickered above him. The metallic walls and reinforced floor of the van told him everything.
He was kidnapped.
Cold plastic bound his wrists — zip ties. A cloth gag had been shoved between his teeth. Two men in black tactical gear sat across from him, masks covering their faces.
"He's awake," one of them said.
"Took him long enough," the other muttered. "Hope he's worth the payout."
Asher's breathing slowed. He didn't panic. He observed.
The restraints were basic. These men weren't professionals. The van had minimal insulation and weak locks. But it didn't matter how sloppy the job was — a child in their position would not survive long.
That's when the screen blinked to life in front of his eyes.
> [Sign-In System Detects Mortal Threat]
Forced Sign-In Initiated
Reward: Beginner Regeneration Manual (Locked)
System Points: +15
> [Notice: This Forced Sign-In is a One-Time Activation Only]
[Due to Life-Threatening Circumstances]
[Note: Only Defensive-Type Abilities Will Be Available via System]
His eyes widened.
So… this was it. His system could protect him — but only under extreme circumstances, and even then, just barely. There would be no fireballs, no martial skills, no superhuman strength. Only what he needed to survive.
A passive tool. Not a weapon.
> [Scanning Body… Complete]
Unlocking Beginner Regeneration Manual…
Pain Suppression: 40%
Minor Cellular Regeneration: +300%
Passive Activation
Almost immediately, the dull ache in his head faded. His breathing evened out. His muscles, though small, began to warm with life.
He shifted slowly, testing the zip ties.
"Kid's squirming," one of the men growled.
"I'll tighten it—"
Snap.
The ties broke.
Asher lunged. Not with strength, but speed and calculation. He slammed his forehead into the nearest man's chin, then kicked at the sidewall, using the rebound to dive for a dropped stun baton.
He jabbed it into the other man's knee.
A flash of sparks.
The van rocked violently as the driver swerved.
Asher didn't wait.
He grabbed the door lever and yanked. It wasn't locked.
Wind rushed in. Tires screamed behind him.
He jumped.
---
His body hit the earth with a solid thud, pain lighting up every nerve.
But he was alive.
The grassy roadside cushioned the worst of the fall. Bruised. Cut. Possibly fractured.
But the regeneration kicked in immediately. The pain dulled. His shallow wounds sealed. His blood slowed.
He crawled into a nearby ditch, hiding behind a collapsed wooden fence.
The van screeched to a halt up the road.
"He jumped!"
"Find him!"
Asher ignored the shouting.
> [Daily Sign-In Complete]
Reward: Language Pack (Russian)
System Points: +2
Useless now. Maybe later.
His heart raced, but his face was calm.
He tapped into the system again, double-checking what it had said earlier. Only defensive abilities. Only in dire moments.
He wouldn't be granted power to destroy his enemies — only the strength to endure them.
Fine.
He could work with that.
Asher took a deep breath and peeked over the edge of the ditch. The men were fanning out, yelling into walkie-talkies. Dogs barked in the distance.
He was alone. Injured. Young.
But not helpless.
This world — this beautiful, deceivingly peaceful world — had shown its darker side.
And now, Asher Raven understood something very clearly.
The rules of this life were different.
He wasn't blessed. He wasn't protected.
He was being tested.
And he would survive it all — one day at a time.
> [Lucky Draw Available]
He smiled through the pain and whispered, "Let's see what the world throws at me next."
