Chapter 22: Chapter -22 Bibi dong's unusual choice.
Chapter -22.
Bibi Dong rose slowly from her grand throne, her nearly flawless face betraying no emotion. Yet, the moment her gaze landed on Ye Chen, a deep sense of solemnity and reverence filled his heart involuntarily.
Without uttering a single word, she prepared to wave the staff she was holding in Ye Chen's direction.
Trying to suppress his anxious heartbeat, Ye Chen adjusted his tone and calmly asked, "Are you really going to kill me? If there's any chance, could you let me fulfill one wish before my end?" He raised his voice, but Bibi Dong remained impassive.
Seeing this, the three Soul Douluos accompanying Ye Chen clasped their hands and remarked, "This child is insignificant; there's no need for Your Holiness the Pope to get directly involved. Why not let us handle this?"
After speaking, the lead bald man smirked menacingly. Ye Chen's persistent escape attempts had caused them a lot of trouble during their journey. Despite his low rank, his resourcefulness had been quite a hassle.
From gravity compression to sword strikes, and even calling forth an additional mysterious martial soul to break free from the restraints to escape; had he been alone, he could have slipped away long ago, which was incredibly frustrating.
Now that the Pope had decided to take action against this child, the bald man eagerly wanted to settle the score for the annoyances they had faced along the way.
"Hey! The Pope hasn't said anything yet, so don't act foolishly!"
Gazing at the short sword in the bald man's hand, Ye Chen felt a chill run down his spine. However, when he looked back at the towering throne, he saw Bibi Dong had not halted her actions and was directly unleashing a wave of black light toward him with her staff.
With that, the bald man and his companions raised their hands toward Ye Chen, shouting, "Die, ant!"
"Die? You monster!"
Ye Chen couldn't help but curse internally, watching helplessly as the black light hurtled toward him, bracing himself for the inevitable end.
"Rongrong, Zhuqing, Hu Liena, I'm sorry; it seems I won't be able to stay with you any longer."
"If I had a second chance, I'd rush to the Spirit Hall just to complete this mission." A roar of regret surged within him. Ye Chen knew he could not escape the wrath of Title Douluo Bibi Dong; her will was unbreakable, and as long as she wished it, he could not evade her attacks.
"Is this really how I'm going to go? It seems so unfair."
As the black light approached, Ye Chen's mind rushed through all his past experiences. He felt a pang of regret for knowing Ning Rongrong, Zhu Zhuqing, and Hu Liena. If he had known his fate would be so soon, perhaps he wouldn't have bothered with signing tasks or entangling himself with Hu Liena, potentially delaying their lives.
Resigned, Ye Chen closed his eyes, awaiting death. Suddenly, he heard splashes and thuds as if something heavy had crumpled to the splendid marble floor.
Then, he fell too but oddly felt no pain, just a wet sensation on his face, as if it had been splattered with some foul liquid.
"Well, I suppose dying this way isn't too bad."
Ye Chen murmured to himself. Maybe a painless death was the greatest comfort he could hope for.
"Is this truly how you wish to leave this world?"
A voice, laced with amusement, floated into his ears. It was pleasant, yet held an air of distance.
Startled, Ye Chen opened his eyes to discover he lay in a large pool of blood, flanked by the lifeless bodies of the bald man and the two other Soul Masters.
Their life force had faded, mouths slightly agape, eyes vacant and confused, gone with lingering regret.
"What just happened?" Ye Chen got up, breaking the seals that had restrained him, and glanced at the woman on the immense throne, confusion etched on his face.
He was baffled as to why she hadn't killed him but had instead eliminated her own subordinates. His mind buzzed with questions.
"I know you're curious, but it's best to hold your questions for now."
Bibi Dong's expression was icy. Settling back into her throne, she said, "Ye Chen, are you willing to accept me as your master? I'm aware of your bond with Xiao Na. If you wish to spare her feelings, come under my wing."
Suddenly, it dawned on Ye Chen that Su Yuntao wasn't the sole reason for his summons; Hu Liena's presence was likely a significant factor.
Though Bibi Dong was proud and aloof, she seemed to hold her disciple Hu Liena in high regard, possibly even more than her own daughter.
But was it merely because of Hu Liena's connection? Logically, if her disciple had been taken by someone, as a master, she should have sought vengeance.
Considering Bibi Dong, who appeared as an authoritative empress, Ye Chen found it difficult to unravel her true intentions. Nevertheless, survival took precedence.
"I bow before my master!"
It was unthinkable not to show respect to this master. Ye Chen sensed the gathering soul power within Bibi Dong's staff. If he dared utter a 'no,' obliteration would be his fate. He knew he had to bide his time until he completed the signing task. After all, he prided himself on being adaptable and resilient.
"Mm, rise!" Bibi Dong, maintaining her regal demeanor, lightly gestured, "Shortly, Xiao Na will come to escort you to the academy. As long as you cultivate diligently and meet my expectations, I shall not interfere with your relationship with Xiao Na. Fail to do so, and..."
She didn't finish her thought, leaving Ye Chen to wisely nod and declare, "I will strive not to disappoint my master's expectations and will work hard in my cultivation."
Before he could say more, Bibi Dong disappeared from the Pope Hall, leaving behind a subtle, fragrant trace.
Soon after her departure, Hu Liena walked through the main entrance. Upon seeing Ye Chen, she merely lowered her head and said nothing, standing motionless.
[Signing Goddess Task Activated, Target: Hu Liena, Task: Become the Best at the Wuhun Temple Academy!]
"It's been a while; how have you been?"
Ye Chen chose to ignore the system's alert. The woman before him was his first true love, and even without the tasks, he would go to great lengths to be with her.
As he approached Hu Liena, wanting to greet her with an embrace, she coldly interjected, "If you value your life, it's wise to behave. Master has made it clear that reckless actions before meeting her expectations will result in dire consequences."
With that, Hu Liena turned and walked out of the Pope Hall, her demeanor as frosty as ice.
Yet, Ye Chen could sense her care for him; otherwise, she wouldn't have offered such a warning.
If Hu Liena truly harbored animosity, she would merely wish for his swift demise without needing to say more.
