Six p.m.
Winter brought early darkness, and the sky had completely blackened.
The spotlights of Capital Stadium blazed to life, illuminating the venue as bright as day.
Spectators who had stepped out for food and brief walks hurried back to their seats, eager for the match to begin. They might skip rookie school team games, but no one would miss the 'Six Elite' civil war.
The national college league, despite its popularity, ran for an entire month. Few people could attend live matches daily, most secretly following matches online after work or school.
Except for highly anticipated duels between famous schools, stadiums rarely reached full capacity, typically hovering at 70-80% attendance. This explained why officials had arranged for Capital University and Eastbridge University to play the opening match.
Thunderous applause erupted as the ten members from Eastbridge University and Capital University entered the arena.
The first time is raw, the second time is cooked.
Roy smiled and waved naturally to the audience, receiving warm cheers in response.
When he reached the contestant preparation booth, Elon adjusted his glasses while staring at the big screen. "Who's the opponent's first player?" he murmured.
Philip looked confident in his abilities. "Eastbridge is as skilled in singles as we are, but—"
Elon initially wanted to nod in agreement, but hesitated and turned to Roy. "Are you ready?"
"Don't worry, my Condition is excellent." Roy looked eager to battle. He had specifically requested the starting position from Elon, impatient to test the "Aura system."
Soon, player information for both teams appeared on the massive screen.
—Capital University team battle starter: Position #3, Roy. —Eastbridge University team battle starter: Position #2, Amanla.
Anya asked with surprise, "They're starting with the exchange student?"
Amanla was a senior exchange student on a one-year program.
Also in position #2, Anya should have faced this opponent and had prepared extensively before the match. However, due to Roy's outstanding performance, the brothers had directly assigned Amanla to face Roy instead.
"They specifically moved their #2 position to the starting lineup. Eastbridge University obviously guessed our side would start with Roy." Anya frowned, analyzing slowly: "Amanla's three main Pokémon in past singles matches don't seem well-suited for team battles. For them to confidently send Amanla into position #2, could it be that..."
Elon pushed up his glasses and suggested a possibility.
"Amanla has other Pokémon better suited for team battles."
"Or perhaps she specializes in team battles..."
Foreign competitors posed challenges primarily because their information remained unknown.
Plus, they often used Pokémon rarely seen by China natives.
Conversely, these foreign students were well-acquainted with popular Pokémon in China.
—A natural information gap advantage.
"Be careful," Anya warned simply.
Roy nodded his understanding and stepped onto the battlefield platform.
On the opposite side, the blonde Amanla mounted the field confidently.
As Capital University suspected, she was indeed a team battle specialist.
Eastbridge University wasn't known for 'team warfare,' so to compensate for this weakness, they positioned Amanla second, giving her sufficient tactical flexibility.
"Both sides choose your Pokémon," the referee announced.
Roy and Amanla each drew three Poké Balls and threw them.
Lucario, Wartortle, and Ninetales materialized on the field.
Amanla's three Pokémon, however, caused an immediate uproar among spectators.
Many realized they couldn't immediately identify these creatures.
Only Roy recognized all three Pokémon instantly.
Delphox, Talonflame, Trevenant.
"This type combination..."
Roy couldn't immediately decipher his opponent's strategy, but from a type perspective, his Lucario and Ninetales, both vulnerable to Fire, were at a type disadvantage, while Wartortle seemed ideally positioned.
After confirming both sides were ready, the referee raised his signal flag high, then swung it down vigorously!
This action triggered an immediate transformation in the arena.
"Niiine...!"
Ninetales moaned softly as howling cold winds and falling frost gradually transformed the ground into an ice field with her at its center.
—Hail.
Across the field, Trevenant plunged its hands into the ground, causing a sudden tremor. Countless lush trees erupted wildly from the earth before it, and nine massive wooden tentacles appeared within moments.
—Frenzy Plant.
As these changes unfolded, Delphox waved the wand in its hand, summoning a lavender flame heat wave that attached to the trees.
Like Typhlosion with its 'Eruption,' Delphox belonged to the same evolutionary family, born with unique flames combining Psychic properties—Mystical Fire.
The Mystical Fire attached to Frenzy Plant and began to burn.
Normally, trees would be consumed by furious flames.
But this Mystical Fire, imbued with psychic power, moved as dexterously as its user's arm.
With perfect coordination between Trevenant and Delphox, the Frenzy Plant merged with Mystical Fire.
Following the principle of mutual enhancement between fire and wood, Fire-type energy and Grass-type energy strengthened each other to unprecedented levels.
Amanla called this battle technique 'Burning Forest.'
The three burning wooden tentacles moved like living creatures, striking fiercely at Lucario. The Burning Forest technique possessed astonishing power, challenging even for professional-level Pokémon to confront directly, especially for a Pokémon with Lucario's type disadvantage.
Lucario, already in the 'Aura Boxing' Condition, chose to evade and quickly attacked the enemy's position.
But suddenly, a powerful gust of wind blew from above, carrying massive fire energy.
The wind covered an enormous area, forcing Lucario to halt and raise 'Protect' to block the 'Heat Wave,' spotting the airborne enemy.
It was Talonflame.
This Talonflame's wings were extraordinarily developed, its wingspan measuring a full two meters. Judging from the power of its 'Heat Wave,' its mastery might have reached Master level.
Talonflame's duty was to monitor Lucario—or rather, to watch all enemies attempting to penetrate the 'Burning Forest.'
While the Burning Forest technique had formidable strength, its weaknesses were obvious. First, the burning tentacles weren't particularly fast. They struggled to catch speedy Pokémon like Lucario without specialized markers.
Second, Trevenant and Delphox needed to concentrate on their moves to maintain the burning forest and couldn't be disturbed.
Talonflame's aerial advantage completely denied Lucario any chance to approach, and with assistance from three burning tentacles, Lucario was perfectly contained.
Meanwhile, the other three burning wooden tentacles shot straight toward Ninetales.
They had a clear objective: interrupt the weather-setter first.
If the battlefield became completely covered in ice and snow, the Burning Forest's power would diminish significantly.
"Wartortle, Hydro Pump!" Roy commanded.
"War-tortle!"
Wartortle guarded his partner, positioning himself before the three massive burning wooden tentacles, condensing tremendous Water-type energy in his mouth.
Seeing this, Amanla smirked inwardly.
How could a mere Wartortle compete against tactics created by two Pokémon working in unison?
...Did he expect to overcome fire with Water-type advantage?
Unfortunately, the Burning Forest possessed not just fire but vegetation, creating attribute equality.
"Kaaah!"
Wartortle released a water jet thick as half a building, with power so tremendous that ordinary Pokémon wouldn't dare face such an attack.
But the result matched Amanla's expectations: Hydro Pump met the Burning tentacles head-on, and after brief resistance, the Burning Forest gained overwhelming advantage. Despite Hydro Pump's massive pressure, the tentacles kept approaching Ninetales.
Faced with this danger, spectators gasped.
Yet Roy issued his next command without panic.
"Use Torrent!"
"????"
Amanla wondered if she'd misheard—and she wasn't alone, as many trainers in the stadium appeared stunned.
Torrent was Wartortle's Ability.
The 'Burst' Condition, triggered only when life was endangered, greatly increased Water-type move power.
But this ability activated passively; there was no "using" it. Moreover, Wartortle hadn't taken any damage.
The next moment, Wartortle's eyes emitted a burst of blue-colored light, with Aura energy surging.
Some mysterious transformation occurred, and the Hydro Pump, which had been weakening, suddenly expanded, pushing back the Burning tentacles.
"How is this possible?!" Amanla's pupils contracted.
A technique combining Trevenant and Delphox's power, overpowered by a mere Wartortle?!
It defied logic!
"—Fusion Aura Sphere!"
Another unfamiliar move came from Roy's mouth.
As the words left his lips, the Aura light activated on Ninetales, who had been fully focused on maintaining the Hail.
Energy flowed into Wartortle's body.
An Aura Sphere formed in Wartortle's hands suddenly doubled in size, launching toward Talonflame!
Amanla quickly ordered: "Defend!"
Delphox and Trevenant simultaneously redirected the three burning tentacles that had been restraining Lucario to intercept the Aura Sphere.
Simultaneously, the three Burning tentacles that Wartortle had repelled attacked again, preventing another attack.
Aura Sphere possessed tracking capability, but once the user lost focus, remote control became impossible.
Amanla's resilience proved impressive.
However, she still couldn't anticipate the Aura system's capabilities.
While Wartortle had no spare energy to control the Aura Sphere, control had transferred to another Aura user.
Lucario, Wartortle, Ninetales, and Roy—all their tactics and intentions communicated through their "Aura Network," creating perfect synchronization without verbal exchange. Roy's commands merely served to impress onlookers.
Lucario's eyes glowed as the connected Aura allowed him to easily take control of the Aura Sphere.
Just as the projectile nearly struck the burning wood, it suddenly changed direction, bypassing the obstacle with incredible dexterity, and resumed pursuit of its original target.
Talonflame, focused on tracking Lucario, took an unexpected Aura Sphere to its back, letting out a confused wail.
Lucario seized this opportunity and sprinted toward the fallen Talonflame, lightning crackling around his paws.
"Car!"
—Thunder Punch.
In one second, Lucario delivered forty-three Thunder Punches.
Approached by a Fighting-type Pokémon, Talonflame had no chance to take flight again and succumbed to the barrage of electrical punches.
"It's over!"
Amanla was sweating profusely. Without Talonflame as her marker, she frantically considered how to defend against Lucario's next attack.
Before she could issue another command, the battlefield changed again.
The ice field completely covered the entire arena.
Blown by frigid wind, Trevenant trembled uncontrollably, its type resistance extremely poor.
The Grass-type weakness mattered less than how the previously rampant Mystical Fire had become sluggish.
"End them, Ninetales," Roy declared victory.
"—Aurora Beam."
Massive ice and snow energy gathered around Ninetales, bathing her in blue energy, making her appear sacred and ethereal.
She, who had been "protected" by her companions throughout the match, launched her first offensive.
The audience held their breath, wondering whether this beautiful, elegant Pokémon was merely decorative or a carry with protection value.
The next moment, Ninetales released a pure white beam of light, striking both Trevenant and Delphox despite their nine burning wooden tentacles.
Aurora Beam? No, this was beyond—this was a true Aurora Cannon.
When the ice energy beam struck, the Mystical Fire, Frenzy Plant, scorching air—everything froze.
Delphox, with its strong psychic power and quick reactions, conjured a Light Screen. However, upon contact with the Aurora Beam, the shield froze as though it didn't exist.
Trevenant suffered worst of all. Before the Aurora Beam even touched it, the cold wind had already frozen it solid, leaving its fate uncertain.
The frozen flames, trees, and two frozen Pokémon created a spectacular tableau on the battlefield.
