Chapter 1: Chapter 1 I was never the breakthrough point for Pei Yansi
Shen Heyu looked at Meng Ru, who sat across from her, radiating self-satisfaction.
A head of golden waves, heavy makeup, barely short of having arrogance written all over her face.
Meng Ru exhaled a puff of smoke, her tone provocative, "I'm pregnant."
Shen Heyu's expression remained calm as her gaze landed on the cigarette in Meng Ru's hand, "Smoking and dyeing your hair while pregnant, be careful—it could affect the fetus."
Meng Ru was taken aback by Shen Heyu's composed demeanor, promptly extinguished her cigarette, and added unwillingly, "It's Pei Yansi's."
Shen Heyu paused, her coffee cup in hand, and sized up Meng Ru anew.
Beneath the heavy makeup, Meng Ru's features did indeed bear some resemblance to a certain person.
Truly typical of Pei Yansi's usual behavior.
Like a recurring drama of the patricians, he never tired of it.
Without the crazed reaction Meng Ru had expected, Shen Heyu's face, beautifully cold and indifferent, remained as calm as still water.
She looked down, stirring her coffee, "Instead of telling me, you might as well sell the news to the paparazzi for some diaper money."
"Or you could seek out Pei Yansi, have him splurge on you, helping you climb up the ladder."
"I am merely the CTO of Pei Group, not in charge of handling President Pei's mistresses."
"You can drop the act!" Meng Ru lost her patience, slamming her hand on the table, "I had someone investigate for three months, Pei Yansi frequently visits your house, even staying for several days at a time."
"You are Pei Yan's official girlfriend."
Shen Heyu sipped her coffee, replied indifferently, "So what?"
"So I want you to bow out gracefully!"
"He doesn't love you anymore, he loves me, and besides, your womb is unworthy, you can't climb up the ranks, you can't become Mrs. Pei, so it should be my turn, someone who already has a child, to step in."
Meng Ru pulled out a stack of photocopies she had prepared earlier and dumped them in front of Shen Heyu.
"Have a look, see how much he loves me. Once he's done with work, he comes straight to me, always brings me gifts whenever we meet, regardless of whether it's a holiday or not."
Meng Ru laughed mockingly, arms crossed, ready to relish Shen Heyu's emotional breakdown.
Shen Heyu remained unperturbed, not even a flicker in her gaze.
Part of the pile was records of Pei Yansi checking into hotels with her, and another part was screenshots of Pei Yansi's bank transfers or his purchase of luxury gifts.
She flipped through them at a leisurely pace, as if merely reviewing work-related documents.
Shen Heyu's slender, pale fingers pulled the stack of evidence together slightly and pushed it forward.
"These are well-collected; they'll save me quite a bit of trouble if this goes to court."
Meng Ru's face slightly altered, not understanding why the woman in front of her exuded such an oppressive presence.
Sharp and shocking.
Even though Shen Heyu seemed nonchalant, her coolness made Meng Ru's courage falter deep inside.
"What do you mean?"
Shen Heyu lifted her coffee, taking an elegant, refined sip.
"Because I am not his girlfriend, but his wife, I have the right to sue and reclaim all the funds and property listed here."
"Your so-called achievements, I will make sure you return every last one of them to me."
Meng Ru's pretty face turned instantly ashen, her eyes panicked, her voice faltering.
"No… That cannot be! You must… must be lying to me!"
Meng Ru tried to remain composed, "The word outside is that Pei Yansi isn't married. You're, at best, Pei Yansi's girlfriend, just one he's been with longer. He's already tired of you, there's no way you could be his wife."
Shen Heyu didn't rush to rebut; she set down her coffee cup and pulled out her phone.
She dialed Pei Yansi's number on speakerphone.
The call had just connected when Shen Heyu calmly called out, "Husband, where are you?"
There was silence on the other end for a moment.
Then Pei Yansi's deep voice came through, "What's the matter?"
In an instant, Meng Ru's face turned ashen.
Had they really... really gotten married?
But she couldn't accept it; since they were secretly married, it meant their relationship must only be tepid at best.
Shen Heyu noticed the resentment on Meng Ru's face and responded to Pei Yansi, "A little starlet came looking for me, claiming she's pregnant with your child."
"Child?" Pei Yansi's voice was distant and cool, with a hint of disdain, "Shen Heyu, have you lost your mind to believe such nonsense?"
Shen Heyu's expression remained unchanged; she just glanced at Meng Ru, a sneer curling at the corner of her lips, "Husband, should I take her for a hospital checkup? This little starlet here seems quite sure of herself."
Pei Yansi's mocking tone came quickly through the phone, "Shen Heyu, are you so eager for me to make this mistake so you can have a righteous reason to divorce me?"
"I'll say it again, it's impossible! Have you forgotten all the things you did back then! You'll never get a divorce in this lifetime!"
Pei Yansi's voice, somewhat distorted by coldness, plunged like a sharp spike into Shen Heyu's heart. She bit down on her pale lips to prevent herself from showing any weakness.
Meng Ru, on the other side, was already eagerly introducing herself, "President Pei, I am Meng Ru. We've worked together before, and afterward, we often went out for drinks..."
"I don't know you!" Pei Yansi said coldly, his tone still carrying anger.
The atmosphere became a bit awkward, and Shen Heyu was already picking up the coffee in front of her.
"You complimented me, saying I have beautiful eyes..." Meng Ru felt increasing embarrassment, her entire face reddening.
Pei Yansi's voice came again, "Shen Heyu, don't call me about this sort of thing in the future."
Meng Ru wanted to say more, but the call had already ended.
He was indifferent to the point of being inhuman.
It seemed like he was rebuffing Shen Heyu but more so as if he didn't even bother to regard Meng Ru.
"I'll go pay the bill then," Shen Heyu said, finishing her last sip of coffee at just the right moment, and, with an unchanged expression, she prepared to stand up to pay.
Meng Ru clenched her dress, her eyes filled with intense unwillingness.
"I want to see Yansi. I can't believe he would treat me this way!"
Shen Heyu raised an eyebrow, really quite a fool who wouldn't cry until seeing the coffin.
She looked down on Meng Ru from her higher position, lips curving into a mocking smile, "The child in your belly cannot possibly be Pei Yansi's."
Meng Ru tried to retort but faced with those piercingly clear eyes, she found herself speechless.
Shen Heyu's cold face bore confident assurance; her admirable poise made Meng Ru feel like she had everything under control.
"You heard what he said, for him, you are just one of many flings, too insignificant to remember."
"A moment of indulgence, but he would never allow the likes of you to bear his child."
"He doesn't like causing himself trouble, nor does he like your heavy makeup, you seem just like a flamboyant peacock."
Her tone was indifferent, her words sharp and to the point.
Maybe Pei Yansi didn't remember, but Meng Xin remembered very well; the last time she saw Pei Yansi, his eyes were icy as he pushed her away.
Leaving behind the words, "The smell of your cosmetics is truly nauseating."
Shen Heyu's fingers tapped the table, landing on the stack of papers that Meng Xin had used to claim her rights.
"You'd better retract your claws early. If you continue to fabricate stories about being pregnant with his child, with his means, it's not just about whether you can continue to be a small starlet; whether you can even stay in Beijing is in question."
Meng Xin was frozen, her face devoid of the earlier pride and arrogance.
Shen Heyu slowly tore up the stack of papers, threw them in front of Meng Xin, and tilted her head with an unchanged expression, "Deal with this yourself. I won't pursue the money as long as you stop harassing me."
"Keep a low profile, and don't bother me. I've never been a weak point for Pei Yansi to exploit."
