Shattered Veil: Rise Of The New Gods

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Trial of Heaven-The nameless soldier

When he woke up he found himself laying on a bed in a white room. His body had fully healed without a scratch to prove he was ever wounded.

(Hello chall...) He went back to sleep, ignoring the abominable voice. He woke a few hours later still feeling sleepy but this was normal for him.

(Are you well rested now?) What do you want? ( Congratulations on passing the trial of Sky. You can receive your reward right now and be taken out of the tower or challenge the next trail for better rewards, what will it be?)

The voice nolonger sounder robotic at all, he felt like he was talking to another human, an annoying human but a human none the less. He didn't answer immediately.

He stood and walked towards the wall where a large mirror was hanging, his back was hunched and his steps were slow, he was basically dragging his feet, literally.

He stood infront of this mirror, what reflected back to him was a develishly handsome face with dark skin and brown eyes. He had short black hair and a face like it was sculptured by Gods.

The only thing ruining this perfect face was the black circles under his eyes but this was normal. Unless in intense situations he usually looked like he was tired, sleepy and probably sick yet was still ridiculously handsome.

He yawned and stretched his body, he was dressed in pyjamas and a black silky gown that felt super comfortable. Where am I? He asked in his low deep voice that sounded flat, fatigue could be felt behind it ( You are in the tower, this is a ward room, it can heal your body and regenerate essence faster to those who have it)

Mm, he nodded. Okay, give me my reward and take me out. He had no intentions of doing another trial. ( I'm afraid that is not possible challenger.) Why not? I'm sure I should be able to choose if I want to accept a trial or not.

( Normally that would be true but there were... malfunctions in the tower or something) you're lying aren't you (How did you kn...) it coughed. ( I mean, how dare you slander me, I'm an honest spirit, I would never lie)

He looked sceptical, so you saying I have no choise but to continue doing more of your stupid trials? ( Hey, they're not stupid, the trial are designed to test worthy challengers to inherit the will of ###)

He didn't hear the last part, as if somebody censored it. Yeah well I'm not a worthy challenger, take me out, he said as he used his pinky finger to pick his nose.

( That not for you to decide) well I am deciding and I've decided to not be worthy. ( That not how that works) he sighed, seems there's not getting out of this.

How long can I stay here? ( For as long as you need to heal, don't worry though, time flows differently in this room, so nomatter how long you spend here it will only be a moment outside.)

Good, he kicked the wall will all of his strength, mind you, since he was not undergoing any trial, the temporary essence and ability were not present.

He was just a normal human in this room, ofcourse after experiencing essence as well fighting corrupted creatures, he stood at the peak of what possible for humans without any essence.

So when he kicked the wall there was a loud crack, he had broken his own toe. Well, look at that, I'm wounded and need more time to heal, what an unfortunate development.

He dragged his feet back to bed and pulled the covers over his head. ( Wait, what just happened? This shouldn't be allowed should it?)

When he woke up his toe was fully healed, he could still the numbness in it but it was still amazing how it was fully healed in only a few hours.

( Well now that over, you shoul...) CRAACK, before the annoying voice could finish it sentence he broke his pinky finger. The room got quiet, it was obviously startled by that, not that he cared, he just wanted it to shut up.

He went back under the covers, the voice started rambling shouting at him to wake up, was it crazy? Why would he do that? He could sleep as long as he want here for just breaking fingers a few times.

It must be out of it mind if it thinks he will willingly do something as troublesome as those trials. Now he just wished it would shut up so he can sleep.

It kept rambling until he woke up which lasted for hours, he couldn't comprehend it, how can somebody talk for so long? You talk too much, he whispered.

(That so rude, how can you sleep when I'm talking to you?) Don't you ever sleep? ( I'm a spirit, I don't need sleep) that sounds terrible, no wonder you're so grumpy.

( I'm not grumpy, you're grumpy, anyways, are you ready to start a new adventurer?) He tried to bite his finger but his body suddenly froze.

( No, no you don't, you know, I've never once met anybody who would break their own fingers just so they can sleep, you're a really strange human Morpheus) his body suddenly disappeared from the room in a blinding light. When he opened his eyes he was in...an army?

What the hell is happening here? He looked around him and all he saw were men dressed in leather armour, carrying spears and marching uniformly.

He looked at what he was wearing and realised he was dressed exactly like the rest. He was obviously one of the soldiers, this trial was strange. What am I supposed to do here?

Just as he had that thought, information started flooding his brain. His character was a nameless foot soldier in the 2nd battalion of the royal army of the Lunar empire.

Currently the empire was in a war with the Demon empire, the war had lasted for an entire century. For the last 4 decades the empire was being pushed back and losing ground.

After a new demon emperor came to power, the strength and savagery of the Demon empire grew. Their king was greedy, he broke the thousand year long treaty.

Started a war with the human empire, they were able to push them back for over 60 years but 42 years ago, something changed, the demons suddenly grew stronger and the empire found themselves on the losing end.

Many of their vassal kingdoms fell one by one before the empire could even respond and currently he and the other soldiers were heading to the front lines as reinforcement.

His head felt groggy from receiving so much information at once. However he still did not know what his purpose here was, just as that thought appeared in his mind the abominable voice echoed in his head.
