Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Trial of Sky- Dream of the dead
The gigantic wolf howled to the sky, it was so loud he felt like his eardrums were going to shatter. Following it howl, freezing cold winds spun around it like a tornado.
Before he could react the winds spread in all directions, covering over 6 kilometres in a blink of eye. Everything within those 6 kilometres was covered in ice.
The pond was frozen over, the trees turned white. His body was also covered in a layer of ice, mind you his upper body was bare, not covered even by a thin cloth.
He shivered both from the cold and the uneasiness his instincts kept giving him. Even now, standing infront of this creature they kept telling him to run with all his might.
Suddenly he felt an imminent death overshadow him. Before he could even react he was hit in the chest by a paw the size of his torso, he felt his ribs crack.
His eyes opened wide with fear, not the same as the uneasiness he was feeling before, this was true fear. He was sent flying into the air with blood jetting out of his mouth and nose like a fountain.
He landed on the frozen pond with bang but the ice did not even shatter nor crack. He slid for dozens of metres on the ice before using his dagger to bring himself to a stop.
Without wasting a moment he jumped to the side then a much darker, much colder beam of ice essence energy than before landed where he was. Ice jutted out of the ground like spears, covering 10 metres around the blast point in almost an instant.
He wasn't able to move fast enough to get out of the area of effect. Although most of the ice spikes had missed him one had stabbed through his left arm.
He felt the arm becoming numb so he pulled it away from the ice spike. The wound was not even bleeding as even the blood had frozen over.
He grimaced as a piercing cold entered bones. His instincts kicked in again, he jumped backwards and slid on the ice and a moment later there was a bang.
A gigantic paw had landed exactly where he was, it cracked the Ice sending ice fragments flying like bullets. He never actually seen a bullet but from the descriptions he read, he imagined this is what they were like.
He couldn't imagine how the humans from before could make a weapon that dangerous without even essence, they were really impressive, worthy of admiration, except the athletes.
He rolled to the side barely dodging another attack. I almost got lost in my thoughts again. I need to stop that bad habit, especially during a situation like this.
Luckily he was on slippery ice which allowed him to move faster than he normally would be able because he honestly couldn't even follow the wolfs movements anymore.
After it evolution, it became many times stronger in all aspects as far as he can tell. He pulled both his daggers and held them in a defensive position, his left arm was shaking, barely able to hold the weapon with a firm grip.
A blue aura covered the wolf's entire body. His instincts screamed at him to move, to run immediately or he will die. He wasn't one to ignore them but it did not matter.
This time the feeling of death was so intense he used his last remaining essence without reservations,he activated his ability, he used the second state.
His feet slightly cracked the hard ice as he sped to the right like the wind. He saw the the wolf move but it appeared next to him like magic. It paw already going for his head.
He leaned backwards and used his left arm to defend himself. It missed his head but the bones in his left arm completely shattered, however he used that opportunity to stab it with his right hand, unfortunately his dagger could not even leave a scratch on it thick hide, despair flooded his heart upon seeing this. It gigantic paw landed on his chest and he felt it cave in.
Blood filled his mouth as he was sent flying like an arrow for dozens of metres. He slid on the ice on his back for over a hundred metres. He coughed another mouthful of blood almost chocking on it and lay there nolonger moving.
His breathing was slow and his eyes were heavy. He was out of essence and stamina, his bones were broken and he was certain his organs were demaged as well.
His entire body was in so much pain he couldn't even tell where he was wounded anymore, it was miracle he was even alive right now, or maybe a curse. Slowly his eyes started closing, he was accepting his death.
What there to live for anyways?, what is it that I'm fighting for? Why am I fighting so hard? I've lost everything I care about, so why? Why do I care so much about this worthless life?
Why am I wasting so much of my energy to protect this sorry excuse of a life? Why do I fear death so much? Why am I such a coward? Is death even that bad? Isn't it just like eternal sleep, I love sleep.
His eyes closed slowly as he drifted to his final sleep, his heat beat slowed down until eventually it stopped. The heretic silver alpha moon hound watched him with it savage gaze.
When his heart stopped and it was certain he was dead it turned it back on him, no longer caring about the worthless insect that dared to challenge it, it had completely lost interest, there was nobody to challenge it authority anymore.
However unbeknownst to it, something improbable was happening to Morpheus. When his eyes closed something appeared in his mind.
He didn't even know if to call it a thought or memory or perhaps it was the legendary dream people used to have in their sleeps but in this he saw somebody.
An impossibly beautiful woman was laying in bed, her face was pale and her lips cracked but her beauty was still enough to overshadow the noble ladies many times over.
Her dark skin was smooth without any blemishes, her long braids still as dark and pure as a moonless night sky, her brown eyes that once caused noble men to fight amongst each still held the gentleness and love he remembered.
This was his mother, his deceased mother and this was the day he lost her. The woman reached her hand slowly, the action obviously draining her energy but she did anyways.
Her once warm hand touched his cheek, he felt the touch as if she was truly before him. My little sleeping prince, she said with a soft caring smile he remembered.
Her beautiful voice soothing to his ears, he remembered it when she used to sing lullabies to him, maybe that why he likes to sleep so much, or maybe he just likes to sleep, not that it mattered.
Promise me Morpheus, she said softly. I remember this, his eyes widened. Promise me that you'll live, that you'll never give up, no matter what.
BOOM, his dream heart beat like a drum, however unbeknownst to him, the heart beat echoed to his real heart. He remembers, he remembers why he cared so much about his life but does it matter, does the promise matter if she right here with him, why should he struggle to live in a world without his loving mother.
The dream around him started to crumble, no, no please no. His mother smiled, a caring smile that hid sadness behind it. I must go now sweetie.
No, no please don't go, tears started streaming down his face. Please don't leave me, I don't... please I can't lose you again, don't leave me again.
She sat from her bed, her legs started disappearing along with their surroundings. She hugged him tightly. You've all grown now my little night prince.
I still need you, please, please don't leave. His usually low, deep and hoarse voice became high pitched as he was crying.
I'll always be with you, she held his hand, right here, she touched his chest right above his heart, but for now, you need to wake up Morpheus.
No, I'm not leaving, I want to say with you here. Her entire lower body was gone now, her disappearance became faster, until even the hand he was holding was gone.
He tried to grab it while crying but grabbed nothing but air. Her head was the last to go, she still had that motherly smile. He screamed at the top of his lungs.
Back in the tower, his body jolted as if he was being shocked with every heart beat, something else unprecedented happened, essence from the atmosphere started flowing towards his body like rivers.
His heart beat harder, almost sounding like a war drum. The Alpha stopped on it tracks, it turned back to look at him. His eyes flew open like a loosened a bow string.
