Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Preparing for the Wedding

Chapter 42: Preparing for the Wedding

"Aren't you working today?" Frank asked Fiona as he dug in the yard, searching for Ginny's remains. Fiona sat on the steps, smoking and holding a bottle of beer.

"Haven't found the right job lately," Fiona replied, taking a drag.

Despite saying she worked, Fiona hadn't finished high school, having dropped out early. She couldn't find a formal job and only took temporary gigs, doing whatever paid at the moment. Essentially, she was a temp worker.

"Want to help your old dad out?" Frank panted.

"Help you dig holes? No thanks. Why are you digging up the yard anyway? Did you hide money here?" Fiona teased.

"Just looking for something," Frank said vaguely, not yet ready to tell anyone about Ginny.

"That Steve guy seems to come around a lot lately," Frank commented.

"Not really," Fiona shrugged, not wanting to discuss it, knowing Frank's aversion to Steve.

"What about Tony? Haven't seen him in a while," Frank asked, hoping Tony's presence would keep Steve in check.

"There's been a nasty murder in the next neighborhood. Tony and the police are busy with that," Fiona explained.

"Oh, I need to pee," Fiona said, heading inside with a small bottle.

After using the bathroom and washing her hands, a woman carrying a baby and a tray knocked and entered.

"Sonia, just in time. The urine's on the table," Fiona said.

"Is it clean?" Sonia asked.

"Of course," Fiona replied, drying her hands.

"Thanks, Fiona. You don't know how much this means to me," Sonia said, grateful.

"It means you can keep doing drugs and still collect welfare, while I get some food to eat," Fiona chuckled.

"This lasagna is fresh out of the oven," Sonia said, handing over the tray.

"This is fresh too. If you want to pass the test, don't let it cool," Fiona said, handing over the urine sample.

"Thanks," Sonia said, tucking it into her bra before hurriedly leaving with her child.

"Lunch is ready. If you don't eat now, it'll be gone," Fiona called out.

"Traded pee for food again, nice," Lip said as he and the others came downstairs.

"What smells? It's either vomit or fancy cheese," Veronica said, stopping by.

"Mmm, tell Sonia if she keeps giving me food this good, I'd happily poop on a tray for her," Veronica joked, savoring the lasagna.

"We're eating lunch; can we not talk about that?" Frank said.

"Aren't you going to Sheila's? I remember her food is much better than this," Veronica commented.

"I like being with my kids," Frank said, ruffling Debbie's hair.

Though Frank had built a harmonious relationship with Karen, progress with his own kids was slow.

Karen, having known 'Frank' through Lip, found it easier to accept the new Frank, while Frank's own children had deeply ingrained memories of him.

"Hey, Debbie, can you help me pick out a wedding gift later?" Veronica asked.

After lunch, everyone left quickly.

"What are you thinking about?" Frank asked, noticing Fiona seemed preoccupied.

"Kevin and V are getting married, you know," Fiona said.

"Yeah, I know," Frank nodded.

"But... Kevin is already married," Fiona hesitated, revealing the secret to Frank.

Kevin and Veronica planned to marry, but Kevin was already married.

"I didn't see that coming. Kevin with his big, honest face, turns out to be a jerk. Does Veronica know?" Frank asked, surprised.

"That's the problem. V doesn't know. Judging by how she acts, Kevin hasn't told her," Fiona said, worried.

The situation was stressing Fiona out, so she turned to Frank for advice, as the wedding preparations were already underway.

"This is simple, leave it to me," Frank assured.

That evening, Frank gathered Kevin and Veronica, with Fiona joining out of concern.

"Kevin, there's something you haven't told V, right?" Frank said directly.

"Frank!" Kevin exclaimed, shocked by Frank's bluntness, nearly dropping his cigarette.

"Dad!" Fiona exclaimed.

"What didn't you tell me?" Veronica asked, confused.

"We all know about you and V. Trust in V's feelings for you, and I believe you have your reasons," Frank continued.

"V, I'm actually already married," Kevin admitted, cornered.

"You're married!?" Veronica's voice shot up an octave.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to keep it from you," Kevin said, hugging her for comfort.

"Who is she?" Veronica asked after calming down.

Kevin showed a photo of himself with a blonde, blue-eyed woman in a wedding dress, a typical Western beauty.

"She's got issues, throws plates at me, and drinks too much. She scarred the back of my neck. I had to run away."

"Darling, you don't know how many times I've wanted to tell you, but as time passed, it all felt less real," Kevin explained.

"I can't believe this. Now we can't get married, and I can't access my father's inheritance for buying a house," Veronica sighed.

"Inheritance?" Veronica's mention caught Frank and Fiona's attention.

"My mom said my dad left me an inheritance for buying a house when I get married."

"Kevin and I weren't sure about marrying, we weren't ready. Then my mom told me about the inheritance."

"Now, no marriage, no money," Veronica lamented.

"Wait, is the money with a lawyer or your mom?" Frank asked.

"You think we can afford a lawyer?" Veronica laughed.

"The money's with your mom. If you want it, that's simple," Frank said.
