Chapter 8: Experiment 6 - A reality check
After the interaction with SCP-529, SCP-9743 didn't remain with his neutral expression, but one of discomfort and worry, and blinking a lot, in an attempt to not cry.
After a moment, a guard enters the containment cell and lets down SCP-085, and then left closing the containment cell's door behind.
SCP-9743 looked at the paper for an instant, with an expression of wonder and interest, then walked and grabbed the paper with his hands. At first, he remained wondering, as looked at both sides of the paper, and then, still wondering, looked at one of the cameras, and shrugged his shoulders and hands.
SCP-9743: "A paper? Seriously?"
SCP-085: "Yep! And I'm a sentient 'paper'! So don't let my appearance fool you!"
Then, SCP-085 answered quickly, surprising SCP-9743, who by the surprise, reacted with an expression of shock, fear, and struggle. His hands trembled with fast movements, that ended dropping or throwing the paper.
SCP-085: "Hey! Don't drop me like that!"
SCP-9743: "... Uhm... Excuse me, what?" He then looked at the camera once again. "Is the paper talking?"
SCP-085: "Yes, yes I am... I'm a sentient drawn woman! So don't throw me around like that, I might be 2D, but I still have feelings!"
SCP-9743: "... Uhm... Is not schizophrenia, right?"
SCP-085: "No, no, it's not. It's real. I'm very real!"
SCP-085 expressed herself while pouting, while SCP-9743 remained in shock, nervous, surprised, and speechless.
SCP-9743: "Okay, okay, jeez... I never saw a... Draw that can talk before, or even talking." Says while picks up the paper, what made SCP-085 feel better.
SCP-085: "Yeah... You probably never saw something like me before..."
SCP-085 smiled, happy as wasn't at the floor anymore.
SCP-9743: "Yeah, no, obviously. But uhm... How is being inside a paper?"
SCP-085: "It's... Interesting. I'm like really tiny, but I can around... Or should I say roll around-"
SCP-9743 remained neutral, his expression not changing, only looking a little nervous.
SCP-9743: "... I don't know? Did you just try to make a joke?"
SCP-085: "Yeah! Did you... Not laugh? Come on I was being humorous!"
SCP-9743: "... I didn't got it, honestly."
SCP-085: "Well, it wasn't that funny anyways, I suppose.. I'm not great at making jokes, unfortunately-"
SCP-9743: "Well, maybe you should try looking with another side of the situation."
SCP-085: "What... Do you mean?"
SCP-9743: "Nevermind, just a try of a joke. As you're a drawn and said you're 2D... So just with another side, you know? The other one?... Forget it."
SCP-085: "... Ohhh... I get it now... Haha... Funny-"
SCP-9743: "Yeah, sure... If is explained, is not funny anymore."
SCP-085: "I guess... But I still did get the humor in it..."
SCP-9743: "... Well... So... What?"
SCP-085: "What what?"
SCP-9743: "I mean... I don't know what to do with you. I'm more of act if I know what I should do."
SCP-085: "Oh, I see... Do you have... A pencil with you?"
SCP-9743: "Uhh, I don't have anything actually. Why?"
SCP-085: "I need a pencil... Or maybe something I can draw with really."
SCP-9743: "I prefer not know how would you draw in yourself, but... Nice."
SCP-085: "Wait- I'm not gonna draw in myself! Just give me a pencil, and you'll see!"
SCP-085 reacted offended, as SCP-9743 struggled to understand what SCP-085 really was, if the draw, or the paper, and kept not finding the difference, and mixing his thoughts by the confusion.
SCP-9743: "Okay, okay... I just thought you were the entire paper. I don't have a pencil, okay?"
SCP-085: "Ugh... Can you get me one? Please? Pretty please?"
SCP-085 played a trick tactic, as she gave SCP-9743 the puppy dog eyes, in an attempt to look all cute and adorable she could, pouting as well, hoping with all of that would be enough to convince SCP-9743.
SCP-9743 reacted with his neutral expression, as if he doesn't care, or even finds SCP-085's attempt as unappropriated.
SCP-9743: "... Be mature. Because for the love of Asgore and all the genocide, I don't really care..."
SCP-9743 gave a short line to SCP-085, but then, SCP-9743 sighed, looking down, and then raising his left hand. As SCP-9743 raised his left hand to the left, a strange portal with glitch particles opened. After short moments, SCP-9743's hand got out of the portal, who closed after the hand got out. And now SCP-9743 was holding a pencil on his left hand.
SCP-9743: "Now?"
SCP-085 was surprised, but then snapped and smiled at SCP-9743 happily.
SCP-085: "... Woah... Yes, yes! Please, give it to me!"
SCP-9743 moved closer his left hand, offering it to SCP-085.
SCP-9743: "Uhm... Grab it, however you can."
SCP-085 grabbed the pencil with one of the corners of the paper, what surprised and scared SCP-9743, as again, his expression was of shock, speechless, with wide open eyes. Struggling to understand what just happened, as if he was paralyzed, not moving and just looking different places with wide eyes.
While SCP-085 tried to balance the paper to use it, SCP-9743 slowly turned to look at the camera, surprised and concerned. SCP-9743 moved his lips with multiple moves, as placing them for kissing, closing his lips, moving them inside his mouth, moving them up and down, and more. SCP-9743 displayed a high level of nervousness and uncertainty.
SCP-085 noticed SCP-9743 movements with his lips, and thought for herself how weird SCP-9743 was being.
SCP-085: "Alright! I got it!"
SCP-9743: "Okay?... I think I'm traumatized."
SCP-085: "What... Why?"
SCP-9743: "Uhm... IS the first time I see a paper talk, and even move. I just... Don't even know."
SCP-085: "Oh... Well, I guess that's understandable... This is not the first time I've met someone who-" She stopped as she suddenly remembered something that didn't wanted to say.
SCP-9743: "'Someone who?' Who what?"
SCP-085: "Oh, nothing, nothing!" She lied, not wanting to bring up bad memories. "So, anyways... Do you like... Mind if I draw something?"
SCP-9743: "uhm, no. Go ahead."
SCP-085: "Alright!"
After short time, a guard entered as the experiment and interaction was took as over, and SCP-9743 gave the paper to the guard by himself, with intention to also stop the interaction. The guard took the pencil away from SCP-085, and then, the guard left, closing the containment cell behind.
Evaluation Report by Dr. Alexander Grimm on SCP-9743's Interaction with SCP-085
Subject: SCP-9743
Evaluator: Dr. Alexander Grimm
Date: 03/16/2022
Experiment Overview:
The purpose of this experiment was to observe SCP-9743's behavioral and cognitive responses to SCP-085, an anomaly characterized as a sentient 2D drawn figure existing on paper. This test sought to gauge SCP-9743's adaptability to cognitively challenging interactions, its understanding of abstract anomalies, and its ability to process unconventional forms of sentience.
Initial Reaction:
Upon SCP-085's introduction, SCP-9743's initial reaction was marked by curiosity, followed by skepticism and bewilderment. SCP-9743's verbal reaction to the anomaly—"A paper? Seriously?"—immediately conveyed a dismissive attitude, likely influenced by SCP-085's unassuming appearance.
However, the instant SCP-085 revealed its sentience through verbal communication, SCP-9743's demeanor shifted dramatically. The expression of shock, fear, and physical trembling, culminating in SCP-9743 dropping SCP-085, indicated a visceral reaction to the unexpected and seemingly impossible nature of the interaction.
Behavioral Analysis During Interaction:
Cognitive Struggle:
SCP-9743's repeated verbal queries, such as "Is the paper talking?" and "Is not schizophrenia, right?" reveal a struggle to rationalize SCP-085's nature. This confusion persisted throughout the interaction, with SCP-9743 frequently vacillating between nervous acceptance and disbelief.
SCP-9743's difficulty distinguishing between SCP-085 as a sentient drawing and the physical paper itself further highlights its cognitive challenge in processing SCP-085's dual nature as both an object and an entity.
Humor and Social Engagement:
SCP-9743 demonstrated an attempt to engage with SCP-085 humorously, albeit with limited success. The exchange regarding jokes—both SCP-085's attempted humor and SCP-9743's retort about "looking from another side"—was awkward, highlighting SCP-9743's discomfort with social nuances and its struggle to adapt to SCP-085's unique form of interaction.
Resourcefulness and Anomalous Ability:
SCP-9743's summoning of a pencil through the use of a glitch-like portal is significant, as it demonstrates an ability previously unrecorded in these experiments. This act was performed with apparent effortlessness but left SCP-9743 visibly nervous, especially as SCP-085 utilized the pencil.
The portal's appearance raises questions about SCP-9743's capabilities, including the source of these summoned items, the potential risks of this power, and its implications for containment.
Emotional Processing:
SCP-9743's repeated displays of wide-eyed shock, trembling, and lip movements while observing SCP-085 handle the pencil suggest an acute difficulty in emotionally processing SCP-085's actions. SCP-9743's statement—"I think I'm traumatized"—reflects its discomfort with the unconventional nature of SCP-085's anomaly, further underscoring its cognitive and emotional limits when confronted with abstract phenomena.
Post-Interaction Observations:
At the conclusion of the experiment, SCP-9743 willingly returned SCP-085 to the guard, a gesture indicating its desire to end the interaction. This voluntary act, combined with its verbal reluctance and visible nervousness throughout the test, suggests that SCP-9743 experienced significant mental strain during the exchange.
Insights and Implications:
Cognitive Limitations:
SCP-9743's reaction to SCP-085 highlights its difficulty in adapting to anomalies that defy conventional logic or challenge its cognitive framework. This limitation could be exploited in future tests to gauge SCP-9743's psychological resilience and tolerance for abstract stimuli.
Behavioral Traits:
Despite its confusion and discomfort, SCP-9743 refrained from hostile or aggressive behavior during the interaction. Its attempt to provide SCP-085 with a pencil and its willingness to engage in conversation indicate a degree of patience and resourcefulness, albeit overshadowed by visible unease.
Anomalous Ability:
The summoning of the pencil via a glitch-like portal warrants immediate investigation. While SCP-9743 did not exhibit hostility, the implications of this ability—including the potential summoning of more dangerous or unpredictable objects—pose a significant risk to containment and require further analysis.
Social Interaction:
SCP-9743's awkward attempts at humor and engagement reflect a developing but inconsistent capacity for social interaction. Its discomfort with SCP-085's attempts at cuteness and emotional manipulation suggests a preference for straightforward communication, though SCP-9743 remains willing to engage when prompted.
Recommendations:
Focused Testing on Cognitive Resilience:
Introduce SCP-9743 to other anomalies with abstract or unconventional forms of sentience to map its cognitive and emotional thresholds. The aim is to better understand SCP-9743's processing limits and identify potential weaknesses or behavioral patterns.
Analysis of Summoning Ability:
Conduct controlled experiments to investigate the mechanics, range, and limitations of SCP-9743's portal-based summoning. These tests should focus on identifying the potential source of summoned items and assessing containment risks.
Emotional Processing Assessment:
Follow-up psychological evaluations should be conducted to determine the lasting impact of this interaction. SCP-9743's statement about being "traumatized" and its visible distress suggest that prolonged or repeated exposure to similar stimuli may lead to emotional or mental degradation.
Protocol for Abstract Anomalies:
Future tests involving SCP-9743 and abstract entities should include clear guidelines for managing its cognitive and emotional responses. Introducing structured, predictable scenarios may mitigate SCP-9743's discomfort and maximize observational data.
Conclusion:
SCP-9743's interaction with SCP-085 revealed notable cognitive and emotional vulnerabilities, particularly when confronted with anomalies that challenge conventional perception. While SCP-9743 demonstrated resourcefulness and a willingness to engage, its visible discomfort and reliance on logic-based processing highlight limitations that could be explored further in subsequent experiments.
