SCP: A TRUE ANOMALY

Chapter 20: Last hope

After SCP-9743 came back again to Site-19, his aura and eyes went back to usual, and he seemed more relaxed, but yet, more worried too at the same time.

But after low time of being back, he encountered himself surrounded by MTF guards, aiming at him. SCP-9743 remained calm, analyzing the situation, but then, stares at Dr. Sophia Adler. As before, SCP-9743 had direct contact with both, Dr. Alexander Grimm and Dr. Sophia Adler, and didn't deal any harm to both, and so, with how things happened in the cafeteria, Dr. Sophia Adler had an idea, as Dr. Alexander Grimm was the only survivor apart of SCP-999, and also, Dr. Grimm was not only alive, but untouched, what made Dr. Adler reach the conclusion of, if SCP-9743 didn't killed, neither even touched Dr. Grimm, was for the longer contact both had, meaning, as she also had some long contact with SCP-9743 by interviews for his psychological state and after some interactions, she wouldn't get touched either.

For SCP-9743's surprise, Dr. Sophia Adler offered him a slice of pizza. SCP-9743 accepted the slice, and then looked curious at Dr. Sophia Adler, and then, started enjoying the slice, and Dr. Sophia Adler heard the whisper gratitude of "Thanks" SCP-9743 said just before enjoying the slice.

After Dr. Adler talked with SCP-9743, surprisingly, SCP-9743 accepted for another interview, what made her think her hypothesis was correct, and for only passing more time in direct contact with SCP-9743, the risk for her was lower, even none.

Dr. Sophia Adler leaded SCP-9743 to a room for chat more comfortably, in a try show SCP-9743 a more direct respect that he showed to deserve and want.

In their way, SCP-035 tried to manipulate SCP-9743, the guards, and even Dr. Sophia Adler herself, at the same time, mentally talking with each, but for everyone's surprise, SCP-9743 told SCP-035 to shut up, and followed Dr. Sophia Adler.

After sitting, both in front of each other, the interview started, while the guards were all around SCP-9743, aiming at him, showing the same calmness when he was being aimed in the cafeteria, showing indifference.

Dr. Adler: "Every time you talked alone, with who you talked?"

SCP-9743: "Well... With other souls bounded to me."

Dr. Adler: "Inside SCP-914's chamber, it sounds like you were talking to a group, rather than to someone in particular."

SCP-9743: "... I was talking to a group. The souls I needed to absorb against 96."

Dr. Adler: "The souls of who you absorbed for neutralize SCP-096?"

SCP-9743: "I don't know, I chose five souls randomly, from the billions of souls I have in there."

Dr. Adler: "Why did you do a breach in your containment?"

SCP-9743: "I was all along there, sent from a cell like a prisoner, to a more darker and slightly bigger cell, still, with nothing in there. You forced me to meet some strange pets, strange people, have some sort of medical date or something, and forced me to fight and kill dangerous stuff. And even after that, I saw it was clear, that I didn't even gained to deserve a single slice of pizza!"

Dr. Adler: "Is there a reason of why you didn't kill Dr. Alexander Grimm, nor SCP-999, in the cafeteria?"

SCP-9743: "... I'll only say... I don't know about that Dr. something, but the blob slime? He survived because the bones went through it. Is slime I think, is not really affected by physical stuff, I think. But is lucky for me using bones instead of blasters, or else maybe that slime would be gone, but who knows, right?"

Dr. Adler: "Do you know why you act different depending of the situation?"

SCP-9743: "... I... I guess I'm some sort of bipolar... Depending of how I'm being treated, I gave the same treat back... But most of times... I just see myself doing something I wasn't even thinking, but just doing so..."

Dr. Adler: "What exactly would you like for cooperate with us? Tell me and I'll take note, and do what I can."

SCP-9743: "... Well... I don't want anything exactly. I could tell you to make my 'room' more comfortable, at least having a bed, or some things as decoration and furniture, but... I want to have my own space here. If I'm forced to stay here, at least I should have my own space. But I'm more intrigued and interested in the stuff with abilities. They give much better company than humans, if I'm being honest. Not all of them, but... I liked being with the doctor, I liked the company of those strange pets, I like the way of be and company of this mask..."

Dr. Adler: "Do you really enjoyed killing all those you killed until now?"

SCP-9743: "... No... I... If I'm being honest, I didn't wanted, but... I didn't had other way... It was a step required for the process... I need to be stronger... I needed that... To finish changing myself for be who I should be... I never wanted anything like that, but humans already proven me enough..."

Analysis of SCP-9743 Post-Return to Site-19: Insights from Dr. Sophia Adler Dr. Adler's Observations on SCP-9743's Behavior

Calm Amid Tension:

Upon his return to Site-19, SCP-9743 exhibits a composed and observant demeanor, even when surrounded by armed guards. His calmness under pressure is not due to naivety or ignorance of the danger but stems from his confidence in his abilities. This behavior demonstrates a profound indifference to human threats, underscoring his belief in his own superiority.

For Dr. Adler, this nonchalant attitude confirms that SCP-9743 views humans as inferior beings whose actions, including their attempts to contain or control him, are largely inconsequential. However, this detachment is not entirely devoid of emotion—there are flashes of frustration and exasperation that suggest SCP-9743 perceives the guards as nuisances rather than legitimate threats.

Reaction to Diplomacy:

The offering of a pizza slice becomes a symbolic gesture of respect. Dr. Adler's approach here is subtle but effective—she avoids escalating the situation by mirroring SCP-9743's casual demeanor. SCP-9743's acceptance of the slice and his whispered "thanks" suggest that, despite his outward disdain for humans, he is still capable of responding positively to genuine, small acts of goodwill.

This moment supports Dr. Adler's hypothesis: prolonged exposure to SCP-9743 in a non-hostile context lowers the likelihood of violence. She notes that SCP-9743's behavior toward her during the interview is marked by a begrudging respect—a sharp contrast to his earlier outbursts during the cafeteria incident.

Insights into SCP-9743's Psychology

Reactive Behavior:

SCP-9743 demonstrates a deeply ingrained sense of reciprocity. He treats others based on how he perceives they are treating him. This "mirroring" behavior is a central theme of his interactions: respect earns respect, while perceived hostility or mistreatment provokes defiance or violence. Dr. Adler recognizes this as both a potential avenue for cooperation and a dangerous liability, as even slight provocations could trigger severe consequences.

Ego and Individuality:

SCP-9743 consistently emphasizes his autonomy and rejects any attempts to control him. His disdain for containment is not purely physical—it stems from a philosophical objection to being treated as an object or subject of study. Dr. Adler believes this stems from his past, where his interactions with humans led to his transformation into what he now calls a "demon." He views control as inherently dehumanizing and fights against it at every opportunity.

Duality of Regret and Determination:

Despite his outward confidence and defiance, SCP-9743 reveals moments of vulnerability during the interview. His admission of not wanting to kill but feeling it was "necessary" suggests a lingering conflict within him. Dr. Adler interprets this as a form of moral exhaustion—SCP-9743 sees his violent actions as a tragic inevitability, driven by his need for self-preservation and growth.

However, this regret does not translate into hesitation. SCP-9743's sense of purpose—his need to "become stronger" and achieve his transformation—overrides his aversion to violence. This unwavering determination is perhaps his most defining psychological trait.

Aversion to Humanity:

SCP-9743's bitterness toward humanity is rooted in past experiences that he views as betrayal, manipulation, and suffering. He frames humans as hypocritical and inherently flawed, describing them as "demons" in need of judgment. Dr. Adler sees this as a key barrier to cooperation, as SCP-9743 struggles to differentiate between individual humans and humanity as a whole.

However, his positive remarks about anomalies like SCP-999 and SCP-035, as well as his surprising willingness to engage with Dr. Adler herself, suggest that he can form connections—though only with those he perceives as distinct from humanity's perceived collective flaws.

Connection to Souls:

SCP-9743's relationship with the souls he absorbs adds a fascinating dimension to his psychology. Unlike a simple predator, he treats these souls as both tools and companions, holding conversations with them and consulting them for advice. Dr. Adler theorizes that this behavior might serve as a coping mechanism for his isolation, allowing SCP-9743 to maintain a semblance of social interaction despite his distrust of living beings.

Dr. Adler's Strategic Observations

Trust Building:

Dr. Adler notes that SCP-9743's openness to dialogue hinges on respect and recognition of his autonomy. Efforts to build trust must focus on treating him as an equal, rather than a mere object of containment. Small gestures, like providing him with a more personalized containment space or facilitating interactions with anomalies he enjoys, could improve cooperation.

Potential Risks:

While SCP-9743's mirroring behavior provides opportunities for diplomacy, it also poses a risk of escalation. If he perceives disrespect or hostility—intended or not—his response could be catastrophic. The presence of SCP-035 adds another layer of unpredictability, as its manipulative tendencies could amplify SCP-9743's defiance.

Intermediate SCPs for Dialogue:

Dr. Adler concludes that further engagement with SCP-9743 might benefit from involving anomalies like SCP-999 or SCP-131-A and SCP-131-B. Their lack of inherent malice and their ability to form bonds with other anomalies could help facilitate more productive interactions with SCP-9743.

Ethical Dilemma:

Finally, Dr. Adler acknowledges the ethical complexity of SCP-9743's containment. While his actions are undoubtedly dangerous, his underlying motivations—freedom, autonomy, and self-preservation—are not inherently malevolent. Balancing containment with humane treatment will require careful consideration, particularly given SCP-9743's immense power and volatile temperament.

Concluding Analysis

Dr. Adler views SCP-9743 as a deeply complex anomaly—a being torn between bitterness toward humanity and an unspoken desire for respect and connection. His reactive nature makes him both a potential ally and a significant threat, depending on how he is treated. While his disdain for humanity presents a challenge, his openness to anomalies and certain individuals, like Dr. Adler herself, offers a glimmer of hope for constructive dialogue.

However, the Foundation must tread carefully. Any perceived slight or mistreatment risks pushing SCP-9743 further into hostility, making containment and cooperation increasingly difficult. For now, Dr. Adler remains one of the few personnel capable of engaging with SCP-9743 on equal terms, making her role in future interactions crucial.
