Chapter 678: The Disappointing Son
The crowd descended the mountain, with Xiao Han trailing behind.
A gust of cold wind chilled Xiao Han to the bone. He turned his head and suddenly saw Grandma Liu's figure floating above the cemetery. She appeared kindly and amiable, her expression serene and peaceful. She seemed to be holding a newborn infant in her arms, murmuring incessantly, "My child... my child..."
Xiao Han sighed heavily.
He hadn't expected that Grandma Liu's heartache turned out to be her very first child in life.
What surprised Xiao Han even more was that to preserve the family, she had actually refused to sell her last possessions to get medical help for the child, leading to the child's eventual death. Perhaps this was the most painful thing in her lifetime. No wonder Grandma Liu ended up suffering from dementia.
"Sigh..." Xiao Han exhaled another sigh and said, "This world is not one where the poor can survive!"
Having come down from the mountain, the group drove away.
Liu Xiaojun drove home, so all the members of the Liu family rode in Liu Xiaojun's car. Xiao Han, however, took only his own mother with him.
"Xiao Han, your Eldest Uncle came looking for you yesterday," Mother Xiao spoke up.
"What for?" Xiao Han asked, puzzled.
"I don't know!" Mother Xiao shook her head and said, "He didn't say, just that he would come again today."
"Oh!" Xiao Han nodded, even though he didn't need to be told the reason for the visit. It was all because of Xiao Dahai's affairs. With his second uncle and aunt's disposition, and their son's success, they would definitely want to show off at Eldest Uncle's house. Now that Xiao Dahai was so accomplished, Eldest Uncle would certainly want to come over and ask Xiao Han to take care of Xiao Zhicheng as well. Xiao Han smiled and said, "He must have come for his son, right?"
"Should be!" Mother Xiao nodded and said, "Xiao Han, we're all family, so help out where you can."
"Mom, have you forgotten how they treated you?" Xiao Han snapped angrily upon hearing this, "It's one thing that they took the house grandpa left for dad. But it's shameful that they even wanted to split the death compensation for dad."
Every time he thought about this, Xiao Han couldn't help but feel a fire burning in his belly, and this nameless anger was constantly ablaze in his heart.
"Silly child, all that's in the past," Mother Xiao sighed and said, "You are successful now, and everyone is trying to please you. As the saying goes, 'Poor people covet money, rich people need favors.' Now that you have money, you should care about the feelings of kinship because there are things money can't buy."
"Mom, do you hope to buy kinship with money?" Xiao Han chuckled coldly and said, "If kinship can be bought with money, I'd rather not have it."
"Silly child," Mother Xiao smiled and then said, "Even if you buy kinship with money, it's still better than having none at all. In the end, you cannot be without family. Look at how many relatives came to see off Grandma Liu."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Han immediately fell silent.
Sometimes, people indeed face difficult choices.
Once, Xiao Han had silently sworn to himself that when he grew up, he would make lots of money, show those so-called relatives his strength, and let them know he was not to be trifled with.
But now, Xiao Han had abandoned such thoughts.
Of course, all for the sake of his mother.
Xiao Han knew that everyone faces birth, aging, sickness, and death, and his mother would also have that day when she would leave him. If the relationship with relatives was too strained and the day came when his mother passed away, if the Eldest Uncle and others didn't attend the funeral, perhaps it would become a regret both for him and for his mother. Just like when his father passed away and there was no sign of the Eldest Uncle or the second uncle's family at the funeral.
This was also why Xiao Han held such disgust and hatred for them to the extent that he would rather give money to his aunt but not a penny to Eldest Uncle or second uncle's families.
However, now that Xiao Han had grown up, it seemed that some of his ideas were quietly changing.
"I'll try my best," Xiao Han said quietly.
"I know you're not content," Mother Xiao spoke earnestly, "but you have to understand, as long as you keep being wealthy, you will always have a status in the Xiao family. They will always cling to you. For money, they will show utmost devotion to you. You don't have to worry about spending money on false sentiments."
"I understand," Xiao Han nodded.
Although Xiao Han didn't quite grasp his mother's words, he knew that as long as he remained wealthy, his identity and status would not change.
Upon returning home, he saw from a distance Xiao Zhicheng's car parked at the side of the road.
The Eldest Uncle's family was already waiting at the doorstep.
Eldest Uncle Xiao Mingguo and Aunt, along with Xiao Zhicheng and his wife. The group's eyes lit up when they saw Xiao Han driving the BMW, especially Xiao Zhicheng's wife, who enviously looked at Xiao Han's car and said, "Now that's a real luxury car. When in this lifetime will I ever be able to afford such a car?"
"There's a chance, there's a chance!" Xiao Zhicheng kept saying.
"Hope so," his wife sighed.
"Sister-in-law, Xiao Han, you're back?" Xiao Mingguo smiled, holding a watermelon in his hand.
"Eldest Brother, you didn't even call before coming?" Mother Xiao seemed somewhat surprised.
"No problem, no problem," Xiao Mingguo shook his head and said, "I didn't want to disturb you. Besides, we've just arrived."
"Come in and sit!" Mother Xiao hurriedly opened the door and welcomed Eldest Uncle's family in.
Once inside, Mother Xiao quickly turned on the air conditioning in the living room.
All the brand-new electrical appliances at home were bought by Xiao Han. Mother Xiao was now willing to use them liberally at home, no longer caring about spending a little more money. The family was doing well financially and had money to spare. Besides, life was only so long; not enjoying it would be a shame, wouldn't it?
"It's really cool!" Eldest Uncle said with a smile.
"Please, take a seat," Xiao Han said.
Eldest Uncle looked at everyone beamingly and then said, "Sister-in-law, I came to see you this time mainly because...because of my good-for-nothing son."
"For me, for me!" Xiao Zhicheng laughed with a smirk.
This kid was slick and smart, but unfortunately, it was all petty cleverness rather than genuine wisdom, mere tricks rather than real skill. Hence, everything he undertook never reached completion; he was the type to always give up halfway, a slacker through and through.
"I can't make this decision," Mother Xiao shook her head and said, "You should talk to Xiao Han about this. How about this: you talk, and I'll go cut some watermelon for you!"
With that, Mother Xiao stood up to cut the watermelon.
Xiao Han sat opposite them, completely composed, and said with a light smile, "Eldest Uncle, what diploma does Brother Zhicheng have?"
"Technical secondary school!" Xiao Mingguo quickly said.
"This..." Xiao Han said helplessly, "Our company is hiring, and especially for administrative staff, we require at least a bachelor's degree. Brother Zhicheng's diploma doesn't meet the standard."
"Xiao Han, your brother is actually quite smart," Xiao Mingguo quickly said, "If you don't believe it, you can have him come over for a trial period first, then you'll know whether he's up to the task."
"This..." Xiao Han hesitated slightly.
"Xiao Han, no matter what, our families are related by blood," Xiao Mingguo sighed, then said, "You have to help out with this matter no matter what. Actually, none of the people in our family are foolish, and we all have decent abilities. Xiao Han, you are now a millionaire big boss, and Xiao Dahai is a manager in your company, earning more than ten thousand a month. I believe Zhicheng wouldn't be any worse in this regard."
"Alright," Xiao Han nodded and said, "Since you've put it this way, Eldest Uncle, I'll arrange a job for him."
"What job?" Xiao Zhicheng asked excitedly, "Am I going to be a manager? You could make Dahai the assistant manager."
"Shut up!" When Xiao Mingguo heard this, he scolded, "What qualifications do you have to be a manager?"
After being scolded by his father, Xiao Zhicheng immediately showed his discontent, saying, "I'd definitely be a better manager than that fatso."
"Okay!" Xiao Han nodded and said, "Next month, we are opening another Apple store in Linjiang City that is still authorized by Apple. I'll let you be the manager of the new store. How does that sound?"
"Really?" Upon hearing this, Xiao Zhicheng became excited and quickly asked, "The salary... how much is the salary?"
"The same as Xiao Dahai!" Xiao Han replied.
"Is it also more than ten thousand?" Xiao Zhicheng's eyes lit up.
"No!" Xiao Han shook his head and said, "The base salary is three thousand, with performance and various benefits combined making up a total of five thousand. The reason Dahai can earn more than ten thousand is because of his commission and bonuses. That's his biggest source of income."
"Oh, I understand," Xiao Zhicheng nodded and said, "So as a manager, do I also have to sell phones?"
"You can choose not to sell," Xiao Han shook his head and said, "But you will only have a base salary of three thousand, and if you meet the performance standards, you might have around five thousand."
"Only that much?" Xiao Zhicheng frowned.
"That's a lot, okay?" Xiao Mingguo bellowed from the side and said, "Can't you just suck it up and go front and center to sell phones? Dahai climbed step by step to get to where he is today. Xiao Han's offer to let you directly become a manager is because you are his cousin."
"I get it!" Xiao Zhicheng nodded.
"There will be performance assessments between the two stores," Xiao Han glanced at Xiao Zhicheng and said, "According to current standards, each store must achieve about five hundred thousand in sales per month, fail to meet that and you've failed, and as a manager, your performance pay will decrease proportionally. So, you better work hard, and don't think you can just coast because you're sitting in the manager's seat!"
"I know!" Xiao Zhicheng nodded and said, "Just wait and see, I will definitely surpass that little fatty's performance!"
"Good, I'll be waiting for your good news!" Xiao Han nodded.
Reluctantly, Xiao Han finally agreed to the arrangement.
Next month, Hanmen Technology is also opening a branch, also in Linjiang City, and in another strategically excellent location, several streets apart from the other store. The new location, with several schools nearby, also boasts a significant amount of foot traffic and is pretty good indeed.
