Chapter 12: "The Silence Between Us"
It was very late when Sara finished packing her backpack.
She hadn't slept all night. Hadn't even laid down.
Every sound in the house made her stop, listen, make sure no one would catch her.
Outside, the wind beat against the windows like warnings.
Inside, everything was still… too still.
Persi watched from the bed, sitting on her hind legs, those green eyes reading her without a word needed.
Sara grabbed her coat, slipped it on quietly, and walked toward the door.
"Come," she whispered. "Let's go."
Persi leapt silently to the floor and followed her.
They crept downstairs step by step, avoiding the creaky boards.
The clock read 3:47 AM.
No one heard them.
No one saw them.
But when they reached the vestibule, something changed.
Persi stopped.
She stood in front of the door, blocking Sara's path with her tiny body, letting out a soft meow.
Not an annoyed sound.
A sad one.
Deep.
As if asking:
"Where are you going?"
Sara swallowed hard. Her hands trembled.
She couldn't take Persi with her.
If she did, Agatha would know she'd left.
If she did, Yuri would find her before she could even walk a kilometer.
If she did, Persi would be in danger.
But she couldn't explain that.
She had no words for it.
So she only knelt before her.
Gently stroked her head.
Rubbed her nose against Persi's — just like they did every morning.
And then…
She left her there.
Closed the door behind her without a sound.
Without looking back.
Because if she did…
she wouldn't be able to keep walking.
🌬️ Outside – The Cold That Follows You
Outside, the freezing air cut through her skin.
She walked fast, keeping her head low, arms tight against her body.
She crossed the backyard, jumped over the broken fence, and disappeared into the forest without glancing back even once.
But she felt something.
As if a part of her had stayed inside the mansion.
As if something important had been left behind.
🏠 The Next Day – The Void She Left Behind
Back at the mansion the next day…
Melinda was the first to notice.
"Where is Sara?"
Agatha lifted her gaze from her tea, feigning indifference.
"Isn't she still sleeping?"
"Her bed hasn't been touched," Melinda replied nervously. "And she's nowhere to be found."
Victor chuckled.
"She ran off? Seriously?"
Evelyn said nothing.
She simply looked toward the window, where Persi sat motionless, staring fixedly into the forest.
As if waiting.
For something.
Someone.
🚆 Meanwhile – At the Abandoned Train Station
Meanwhile, at the abandoned train station…
Sara was exhausted. Cold. Hungry.
But she couldn't stop.
An old man, wearing worn-out clothes and tired eyes, asked:
"Where are you headed, girl?"
Sara met his gaze with determination.
"Edinburgh."
He nodded slowly.
"There's a train leaving in an hour. Goes straight there. You can sneak on if you want. Nobody asks too many questions around here."
Sara handed him the little money she had saved.
"Thank you."
She sat on the broken wooden bench and closed her eyes.
She was alone.
Cold.
But she had a clear purpose.
📍 The Most Important Address
Edinburgh. Whitmore Street, 42.
There, she would find Elias Rhen.
There, she would discover who killed her parents.
There, her real battle would begin.
But before the train arrived, she pulled out her diary and wrote:
📝 Diary of Sara Campbell Jhonson
Date Unknown
I left.
Without saying goodbye.
Without giving explanations.
Without looking back.
She understood.
I saw it in her eyes.
She knew I was leaving.
But she didn't say anything.
Not even a loud meow.
I think she let me go…
because she knew I had to.
I promised to come back.
Not with words.
With my heart.
Because even though I don't know which path to take,
even though I have no certainty,
even though I no longer have her warmth beside me…
she's still with me.
Always.
🌌 Final of the Chapter – The Orphan Who Won't Stay Silent
Sara held the diary close as the distant whistle of the train echoed.
There was no turning back.
She had left her home.
Left her past.
Left the only creature who had ever truly understood her.
But she wasn't running away.
She was searching.
Searching for answers.
For justice.
For the truth.
And somewhere, under the roof of the empty mansion, Persi remained.
Still watching the forest.
As if she knew that one day…
her owner would return.
