Chapter 42: Dreams of Bone and Memory
Location: Unknown Zone (Mindscape / Weekly Task Realm)
Time: July 17th, 2:00 AM
---
Kael dreamed.
But this dream wasn't like others. It didn't feel like sleep. It felt like someone opening his skull and stepping inside.
> [Weekly Spiral Task Activated]
Objective: Face the Memory-Guardian and survive.
Reward: Sync +5% with Soulbound Mimic.
Penalty: Temporary echo distortion. Identity instability risk.
Kael stood on an endless plain of white bone, under a sky stitched together by threads of red nerve-light. Everything pulsed. Not with life—but memory.
Something moved.
A humanoid creature formed from jagged memories and spiral scars stepped forward. Its face was his. But its eyes were hollow.
> "You've forgotten what matters most," it said.
Kael instinctively drew his blade—except he didn't have it.
He was unarmed.
He clenched his fists.
> "This is a mental trial," said a voice. The mimic's voice, inside his head. "Not every enemy can be cut."
---
2:05 AM – Memory Loop Initiated
The world shifted.
Kael now stood in the ruins of the orphanage he had faught during the judgement day. But every window reflected a different moment. His past. His failures. His doubt.
He saw himself failing to save his younger self. Failing to speak when he should have. Staying silent when people broke down. Letting Armin fight alone. Ignoring Dain's unspoken fears.
The spiral-shaped entity—his memory-guardian—spoke again.
> "You're a leader who hides from truth."
Kael walked forward. "I don't hide. I endure."
> "Enduring is not healing."
The mimic spoke again, voice sharp and distant: "Fight not with blade. Fight with anchor. Prove your mind won't break."
---
2:11 AM – Trial of Anchors
Kael knelt.
He thought of three things:
Elle's unwavering gaze before every battle.
Armin's laughter after dumb victories.
Dain's stupid jokes that never landed.
Those weren't powers. They were anchors.
The Guardian lunged. Kael didn't move. Didn't flinch.
He remembered who he was.
> "I'm not Echo. I'm Kael." "And I decide what I become."
The Guardian froze mid-strike. Then shattered into fragments of ash and memory.

2:15 AM – Task Complete
> [Weekly Task Completed]
+5% Mimic Sync
Identity Stabilized
Soulbound Evolution: Minor Unlocked
The mimic appeared before him—this time in the form of Kael, but wearing an ancient crown of bone and stitched symbols.
> "You faced yourself. This pleases me." "But next time… I may not help."
Kael blinked.
The world faded to darkness.
He woke up in his bedroll at sunrise, cold sweat clinging to his back.
---
6:30 AM – Surface Camp, Ruin Outskirts
Kael sat up.
No one else stirred.
But he felt it. The mimic, watching from the shadows, silent but satisfied.
And something else.
> [New Trait: Echo Anchor – You are harder to manipulate by illusion, memory attacks, or mimic influences. Passive.]
Kael looked up at the sunrise. A new day. A new task.
But his mind? Clearer than it had been in weeks.
