Chapter 59: Fifth Life, Challenges Jean
Eula's declaration instantly drew all eyes to her—including those of the Knights of Favonius, who stared in shock.
Whispers broke out across the crowd as people gathered, eager to see what kind of drama would unfold.
They wanted to see what gave this young noble descendant the audacity to challenge the very order of Mondstadt.
Before long, the Knights themselves were in a stir, rushing out one by one.
Among them was Jean, the Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius.
"I know you. Jean, Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius—I challenge you!" Eula pointed her greatsword directly at Jean.
In that moment, the entire crowd went still.
"Pfft—"
"Hahahaha! Is this noble girl out of her mind? She actually dares to challenge Captain Jean?!"
"Seriously, I'll never understand how nobles think."
"Does she still believe she can push people around like the nobles used to?"
"Looks like she hasn't adjusted to reality yet."
"Oh, this is going to be good. I can't wait to see her get humiliated. Just thinking about it is hilarious."
The people of Mondstadt harbored a deep-rooted hatred for the nobility.
Even the Knights struggled to contain their reactions. Though some were visibly amused, they held back—after all, the Knightly Order had a reputation to uphold in serious matters.
"Why do you want to challenge me?" Jean asked calmly, without the slightest hint of mockery.
What she saw in Eula's eyes was...
Absolute seriousness.
And...
Unshakable fighting spirit.
She understood immediately—Eula wasn't joking. She truly meant to challenge her.
"You don't need to know. Just say whether you accept or not."
"I don't engage in meaningless fights. Give me a reason."
"A reason..." Eula fell silent for a moment.
"If I win, I become Acting Grand Master. If I lose, I'll accept whatever punishment you choose."
She believed wholeheartedly that the sword technique she had honed—born from Master Elliot An's teachings and fused with her Dance of Sacrifice—was anything but weak.
She believed in her strength.
"Alright. I accept your challenge," Jean responded with equal seriousness, looking her straight in the eyes.
The crowd cleared, giving them space.
Eula stepped forward, greatsword in hand, and launched her assault using her unique, dance-like combat style.
Jean was caught off guard. The unfamiliar technique left her momentarily unprepared—her response was clumsy.
Eula didn't let up. She pressed forward relentlessly, giving Jean no room to maneuver. Within moments, she had the upper hand and pushed Jean back.
"This... is this actually happening?"
"Is Jean holding back? It looks like she's being suppressed!"
"Captain Jean, don't go easy on her! Come on!"
"But that noble's attack really is something else. And it almost looks like she's dancing. What kind of swordplay is that?"
"Yeah! I've never seen anyone wield a greatsword like that. It's mesmerizing."
The crowd watched in stunned silence as Eula drove Jean back.
But Jean quickly adapted. She found her rhythm and began to push back, and soon their fight reached a fever pitch.
Blow after blow, neither could land a decisive hit. Their strength was evenly matched.
But Eula was still young. Her mind wasn't steady enough. The more desperately she wanted to win, the more mistakes she made. The moment she grew impatient, her stance wavered.
Jean saw the opening—and in a flash, counterattacked. Her blade stopped inches from Eula's neck.
The strike came so fast that no one even saw it happen.
One second they were neck and neck—the next, the outcome was decided.
Eula stared at the cold gleam of Jean's blade. The fire in her eyes dimmed.
"I lost... I'll accept your judgment."
She sheathed her sword and admitted defeat with full dignity.
Jean withdrew her blade as well.
"You're Eula Lawrence, right?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Very well. My judgment is..."
Eula lowered her head, fists clenched, bracing for the worst.
"Join the Knights," Jean said with a gentle smile.
The entire crowd froze.
The silence was so complete you could hear a pin drop. Even the air felt heavy.
Eula was stunned. The Knights were stunned. The townsfolk who had gathered to watch were utterly dumbfounded.
"What?!"
A thunderous wave of disbelief rippled through the crowd.
Eula's trembling eyes slowly looked up—Jean was still smiling calmly.
"Why?" she asked.
"I acknowledge your strength. You challenged me on your own. And after losing, you admitted it without hesitation. I believe you're a person of integrity."
"The Knights don't care about your past. We care about your character. If someone is strong and holds justice in their heart, we won't let them go. So, come—join the Knights of Favonius."
Jean extended her right hand to her.
At the sight of that outstretched hand, warmth surged through Eula's chest.
She had thought that Elliot would be the only person who knew her origins and still accepted her fully.
She never imagined she'd find a second.
"I must've misheard! Captain Jean, she's a noble! The kind of noble who once brought ruin to all of Mondstadt! How can she be allowed to join the Knights?!"
"Yeah! She has the blood of a criminal! The Knights are supposed to uphold order in Mondstadt! How can we let someone like that join us?!"
"We won't accept it! She'll become a traitor! She'll steal our secrets and hand them over to the nobles!"
Soon, protest voices rose from the crowd one after another.
Eula's heart sank slightly.
Then Jean stepped forward.
Every eye turned to her again.
"People of Mondstadt, I ask you—trust my judgment."
She didn't offer any further explanation. She knew full well how deeply rooted the people's bias against nobles was.
That kind of hatred wasn't something even she could erase overnight.
So instead, she invoked her authority.
The crowd quieted.
Jean's status in Mondstadt held weight. If she had made a decision, most were willing to respect it—even if they didn't like it.
The protests fell silent.
Jean turned back to Eula and extended her hand again.
"So, what do you say? Will you join us?"
Eula stared at that hand in a daze.
Then slowly—she reached out and took it.
"Fine. I'll do as you say—I'll infiltrate the Knights and become a mole. When I've learned all your secrets... I'll come back for revenge."
