Rise in the Ashfall : The Final Days

Chapter 8: Chapter 7: Plans and Preparations

Kael Arden leaned against the workbench in his settlement's workshop, staring at the scattered resources he'd managed to scavenge. The shelves were fuller than they had been a day ago, but that wasn't saying much. His haul from Ashridge Outpost had bought him time—three days of rations, a fuel canister to keep the generator running, and enough steel and wood to patch up the south wall.

It wasn't enough.

He tapped his fingers against the workbench, the rhythmic drumming echoing softly in the dim room. The HUD flickered in his vision, displaying his settlement's current status.

[Settlement Status:

Resource Stockpile: Moderate.

Structural Integrity: 85%.

Defenses: Basic.

Power Systems: Stable.

Food Supply: 3 Days.]

His stomach twisted at the last line. Three days wasn't much. If another Necrostorm hit before then, he'd be fighting on an empty stomach—and he didn't like his chances.

Kael pushed off the workbench and paced the room, his boots clanging against the steel floor. He needed a plan, something to keep him from falling behind.

The system chimed softly, pulling Kael's attention to a new notification.

[Upgrade Options Available:

Solar Array (Level 1): Increases power efficiency, reduces dependency on fuel.

Cost: 8 Steel, 5 Wire Coils.

Defensive Traps (Level 1): Deploy ground-based traps to slow or damage enemies.

Cost: 5 Steel, 3 Wood (Per Trap).

Panic Room (Expansion): Enhances basement security, adds storage capacity.

Cost: 10 Steel, 6 Wood, 1 Fuel Canister.]

Kael rubbed his chin, studying the options. Each one had its advantages. The solar array would solve his power issues in the long term, while defensive traps could shore up the base's vulnerabilities.

But the panic room called to him. It wasn't flashy, but it was practical—a secure fallback point if the rest of the base fell. He selected the upgrade, and the system responded:

[Panic Room Upgrade Initiated. Estimated Time: 20 Minutes.]

A holographic blueprint of the basement appeared in Kael's HUD, showing the changes in real time. Reinforced steel walls replaced the older supports, and new storage units materialized along one side. The upgrade also added an air filtration system, ensuring the room could function as a long-term shelter.

Satisfied, Kael returned his focus to the next priority: bolstering the base's defenses.

The base's perimeter was stable for now, but Kael knew that wouldn't last. His previous encounters with the wolves and the Colossus had made one thing painfully clear: relying solely on walls and turrets wasn't enough.

He opened the construction interface and selected the defensive traps option. The HUD displayed a variety of blueprints, each one offering different benefits.

[Spike Traps: Rows of sharpened steel spikes designed to impale enemies.

Cost: 5 Steel, 2 Wood (Per Trap).

Proximity Mines: Explosive devices triggered by motion.

Cost: 3 Steel, 1 Wire Coil, 1 Fuel (Per Mine).

Electrified Panels: Ground-based traps that shock enemies on contact.

Cost: 6 Steel, 3 Wire Coils.]

Kael decided to start with the spike traps. They were simple, cost-effective, and easy to place around the perimeter. He marked locations along the north and south walls where the traps would be most effective, then began the laborious process of building them.

The system's Adaptive Architect trait made the task easier, offering real-time suggestions to optimize the traps' placement and design. Kael followed the holographic blueprints, welding steel spikes onto reinforced frames and securing them into the ground with concrete anchors.

Sweat dripped down his face as he worked, the midday sun beating down relentlessly. The process was grueling, but the results were worth it. By the time he finished, the north and south walls were lined with deadly rows of spikes, their sharp edges glinting in the sunlight.

[Spike Traps Deployed: 4. Passive Defense Bonus Applied.]

Kael stood back, wiping his brow with a grimy sleeve. "Not bad," he muttered, though his voice carried more exhaustion than pride.

With the traps in place, Kael turned his attention to his weapon situation. The damaged shotgun he'd scavenged from Ashridge Outpost was sitting on the workbench, its barrel warped and its firing mechanism jammed. Beside it, the repair kit he'd found offered a glimmer of hope.

Kael rolled up his sleeves and got to work, disassembling the shotgun piece by piece. The repair kit provided replacement parts for the damaged components, and the system's Engineer's Insight ability highlighted areas where adjustments were needed.

It took over an hour, but by the end of it, the shotgun looked—and felt—like new. Kael loaded it with a handful of scavenged shells, testing the weight in his hands.

[Shotgun Repaired. Weapon Added to Inventory.]

A faint smile tugged at Kael's lips. He wasn't much of a fighter, but having a proper weapon in his arsenal made him feel a little less like a walking target.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, Kael climbed to the top of the watchtower. The view from up here was the same as always—an endless stretch of wasteland dotted with ruins, ash-covered debris, and the occasional flicker of movement in the distance.

He leaned against the railing, letting the cool evening air wash over him. The HUD flickered faintly, displaying the settlement's updated status:

[Settlement Status:

Resource Stockpile: Moderate.

Structural Integrity: 90%.

Defenses: Upgraded.

Food Supply: 3 Days.]

It wasn't perfect, but it was progress.

Kael's mind wandered as he gazed out at the horizon. He thought about the Colossus, the Necrostorm, and the system that had somehow dragged him into this world. Every step he took raised more questions than answers.

Why was he here?

What was the system?

And what was he supposed to do next?

The system chimed softly, pulling him from his thoughts.

[Incoming Alert: Unknown Signal Detected. Investigate?**]

Kael straightened, his pulse quickening. "Unknown signal?"

A new marker appeared on his map, highlighting a location a few miles to the west. It was faint, almost like a distress beacon, but the system didn't offer any additional details.

Kael's grip tightened on the railing. He didn't like the idea of walking into the unknown, but if there was even a chance it could lead to answers—or allies—it was worth the risk.

For now, though, he needed rest. Tomorrow would bring a new challenge, and he needed every ounce of strength to face it.
