Rick and Morty: Smartest Morty in the multiverse

Chapter 12: Morty true face

By the time Mr. Weathers wheeled the supply cart into the lab, half the class had already paired off.

The man cleared his throat in that tired, nasal way teachers do when they're one more bad assignment away from quitting.

"Alright, folks science fair prep starts this week. Pairs only. You'll be working together through the entire project, so pick someone you can tolerate for more than five minutes."

Most of the class broke into predictable pairs. Jessica with Amber. Brad with Trey. Even Summer with a girl from her chem lab.

Chad stayed seated arms crossed, watching the room with a smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Weathers scanned the groups, tapping his clipboard. "Morty Smith… and… Chad Reynolds."

The words landed like a brick between them.

Chad's smirk sharpened. Morty didn't blink.

Weathers scribbled a note. "That's final. Play nice."

With a grunt, the teacher moved on—pairing off the last stragglers before retreating to his desk.

Chad leaned back in his chair, letting the lazy grin spread slow.

"Well, ain't this cozy."

Morty unpacked the project kit, laying out the components. "Is that what we're calling it?"

Chad gave a soft chuckle. "Y'know… you might've spooked me a little back there."

Morty clipped a wire to a circuit board. "Only a little?"

"That's the thing about guys like you," Chad said, tapping the table with a finger. "You bark real clever when no one's calling you on it."

Morty didn't answer.

"So here's me calling you on it." Chad leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice. "Jessica? You think you're gonna get anywhere near her?" He gave a slow shake of his head, almost pitying. "She's way out of your league. Always has been. You're just… background noise. The kid girls smile at because they feel bad."

Morty soldered a joint on the board, steady as a metronome.

Chad smirked. "You're the kind of guy girls outgrow before they even notice you were there. And you're gonna find that out the hard way."

A beat passed.

Morty set the soldering iron down, eyes flicking up to meet Chad's. Calm. Measured.

"You're not wrong," Morty said softly. "Jessica probably wouldn't look twice at a guy like me."

Chad opened his mouth

But Morty wasn't done.

"Which makes me wonder…" Morty tilted his head slightly, voice dropping to a quiet, almost thoughtful cadence. "Why you're the one bringing her up."

Chad blinked. "What—"

"I mean…" Morty leaned forward, folding his hands on the table. "It's weird, isn't it? You sitting here going out of your way to remind me I don't stand a chance. Almost like you're trying to convince yourself I don't."

The smirk on Chad's face faltered.

Morty smiled faintly. "You don't like the idea that I'm different now. That maybe I'm not the easy target you've been stepping on since freshman year. So you switch tactics. You go after something you think matters to me. Something you think I care about."

He shook his head slightly. "But here's the thing, Chad…"

Morty's eyes met his steady, cool.

"If you really thought I was nothing? You wouldn't be talking to me at all."

Chad bristled, leaning in. "You think you're untouchable, huh?"

Morty gave a soft, almost amused breath. "No."

Chad narrowed his eyes. "Good. Because I'm gonna beat your ass. Maybe not today. But one of these days, you're gonna slip—and I'll be there."

Morty didn't move. Didn't blink.

He let the words hang in the air like a rope waiting to snap.

Then calm, measured, clear as glass:

"No. You're not."

Chad's brow furrowed. "What?"

Morty spoke softly—softer than Chad expected.

"Because guys like you?" Morty said, voice low. "You don't wait. You don't plot. You don't plan. You act in the moment when there's a crowd, when it's easy. You feed off attention. Off fear. And the second you don't get either… you fold."

He gave Chad a slow, knowing look.

"That's why you're sitting here… making promises you know you'll never keep."

Chad's mouth opened

Morty beat him to it.

"And that's why you'll always be a coward dressed up like a tough guy."

The silence wrapped around them like a steel wire.

Chad's jaw clenched. His fists balled on the table.

But he didn't say a word.

Didn't move.

Because deep down… even Chad knew Morty was right.

And Morty?

Morty turned back to the circuit board, sliding a diode into place like the conversation never happened.
