Reverend Insanity: The Goody Two-Shoes System

Chapter 116: Lightning Lycan King: Part Two

Fang Yuan walked into the underground cavern once again.

It was filled with gu worms, though as he was only interested in those of Rank 4, he had a far more limited selection to talk a look at.

The clan had only a select Rank 4 gu worms. If there were any Rank 5 gu worms, they were not kept here, but rather, in a secure spot where only the clan head knew. Fang Yuan had not yet earned the right to go down to that place, but it would greatly surprise Fang Yuan if the clan didn't have a Rank 5 gu worm or two.

After all, any clan that could last for a thousand years had to have a secret weapon of sorts. Whether that was an ancestor or some kind of gu worm- each clan would have something along those lines. Fang Yuan did not know what the Gu Yue clan's secrets were, after all, even in his previous life he had never made it far up the clan hierarchy.

Whatever it was though, it had not been enough to save the clan from Bai Ning Bing's detonation.

With only about ten Rank 4 gu worms, Fang Yuan quickly made his decision before leaving.

Wherever he went, people bowed to him. They had been subservient before, but ever since he had reached Rank 4, they were practically prostrating themselves on the streets when he walked by.

Even the other elders were quite the same - their invitations to various events had increased in frequency, though Fang Yuan tacitly declined them citing the current wolf tide as the reason.

There was a reason behind such toadying- up until now, most people had thought that Fang Yuan was a good candidate for future clan head, but with him entering the realm of Rank 4, this was nearly confirmed.

Of course, while becoming clan head would bestow a number of benefits upon Fang Yuan, they were not worth the trouble of being anchored down to Qing Mao mountain.

Granted, he was anchored down due to another reason now, but he still saw no merit in challenging the current clan head for the position. For now, he could support the current clan head so that he would be under less scrutiny. If he shook the boat too much, the elders would gather around the current clan head and start pressing Fang Yuan regarding his secrets.

As a matter of fact, Fang Yuan was still quite surprised that he had not been interrogated further. It was a bit... eerie. Even given the nature of the wolf tide, he'd have assumed that the clan head must've had several questions, but he had not even broached the topic with Fang Yuan.

It was almost as if... he had already formed a conclusion regarding what had happened, and so did not feel the need to ask Fang Yuan about it further.

'Is there something missing? Or something that I don't know about?' Fang Yuan thought. He could not get rid of the feeling of unease that permeated his mind. There was no way that the clan head could've possibly known about the Immortal Inheritance else the entire mountain would be in an uproar to get to it, even if it was intended entirely for Fang Yuan. So what was the lie that the clan head was assuming was the truth?

The fact that Fang Yuan was clearly missing a piece of the puzzle was annoying, but there was little that he could do. He had reached out to the other elders, but they were either as ignorant as he was, or were hiding it from him. He had only been an elder for a few months, and had not had time to develop deep relations with any of the major factions.

Even as he considered this, he went to do his daily quest for the system- giving a homeless man a primeval stone. The man thanked Fang Yuan for his kindness, but then Fang Yuan was jolted out of his reverie by something responding in his aperture.

Could it be...?

He had been wondering what the gu worm he had obtained from rock gambling was for the longest time, the one that he hadn't had to feed. When Paradise Earth had mentioned that he would need one of seven gu worms to refine the Righteous Virtue physique, he seemed to be implying that Fang Yuan had one of them.

Fang Yuan had a guess regarding what the gu worm was, but now, he was nearly certain as to its nature. He only had to confirm it.

He walked into the wine tavern. The waiter there greeted him, bowing deeply.

"Is my younger brother in?"

"Yes, Young Master Fang Zheng is sitting at one of the tables in the back. Is there anything this lowly servant can get for you?"

"No, that's fine," Fang Yuan said, walking into the tavern.

Fang Zheng was speaking to Gu Yue Ye, regarding a similar matter as last time.

As a matter of fact, Fang Yuan had come in initially to tell Fang Zheng off for selling some of the Vitality Leaves at a discount to some customers and not others. Even if Fang Zheng was not doing it to further his own bottom line, it was causing issues when it came to their business. Once one person realized that they could get a discount, all of them began clamoring for one.

"Like I said, I can't keep selling it to you for lower than-" Fang Zheng was telling Gu Yue Ye when he saw Fang Yuan.

Fang Yuan was seldom seen in the wine tavern now-a-days, so his presence immediately put Fang Zheng on guard. "Ah, elder brother, welcome!"

Jiang Ya also bowed when he saw Fang Yuan, and Gu Yue Ye immediately became subdued upon feeling Fang Yuan's Rank 4 aura.

"Lord Fang Yuan!"

"Elder Fang Yuan!"

Fang Yuan waved his hand and asked them to sit down. "I didn't come here to drink, but because I had a matter to take care of. Fang Zheng, I had heard that there were some people who were bothering you about a discounted sale?"

Fang Zheng gulped. It was true, but if he let Fang Yuan find out, what kind of punishment would he give Gu Yue Ye? It wasn't that Fang Zheng felt too much sorry for the old man, but he didn't want to throw him under the bus either.

"Ah... no... Elder Fang Yuan it isn't like that..." Gu Yue Ye said, stuttering. His face began to become coated with sweat. "It's just I was wondering if certain mercy could be shown to this old man..."

Fang Yuan pulled out two Vitality Leaves. "I can give you these two for free, but I request that you tell no one else about this." His face then morphed into a gentle expression. "I understand that with the wolf tide becoming fierce, we need to look out for one another. The wolves may eject their elderly and starving, their weak and feeble, but we are humans after all. To look after those less fortunate than us is our duty."

Gu Yue Ye almost didn't dare take the Vitality Leaves. He had been adamant about getting them earlier, but now that Fang Yuan was freely offering them to him for no cost, it was like trying to put his hand into a scorpion's nest. Was this some sort of sick joke from Fang Yuan?

"I am unworthy of such kindness!" Gu Yue Ye said, shaking his head.

"I insist."

That sealed the deal, and Gu Yue Ye took the leaves, not believing his own luck. He had been looking to save a few primeval stones, but this would save him at least a 100!

As Fang Yuan did this, something in his aperture changed as well. The Rank 4 gu worm which had been a mystery up until now began glowing, changing, until it grew a fifth finger and now looked entirely like a human hand in a position of pronation.

The refinement process had succeeded- he had indeed turned it into a Rank 5 gu worm as he had been expecting!

This also confirmed the gu's identity to Fang Yuan, something that had been a mystery for quite a while - it was Charity Gu!
