Chapter 1: Chapter 1: A secret
"Cheers!"
Today is my birthday, but amongst everyone gathered for the celebration tonight, I'm more surprised to be here than anyone else!
Shockingly, although I'm the only daughter of the third most prominent family in the whole continent, my birthday has never been celebrated.
That's right, in all my years of living as a decorative daughter, this is the first time I'm being acknowledged openly. On my eighteenth birthday! How sick is that?!
"Sir Regulus asked for you. Follow me"
Like a robot or a well-groomed pet I followed behind, leaving the midst of aristocrats and walking through the crowd while they made small talk, I finally arrived at the inner room but I was shocked to see my entire family present. They were obviously waiting for me.
"What took you so long?!" My father's stern voice reverberated through my being and I dared not raise my head. The butler only just sent for me, so if he feels I kept him waiting then it only means one thing.
The servant played one of their tricks again!
They delayed in sending for me and now I was made the stubborn bull who kept the entire family waiting.
I clutched my elaborate ball gown to stop my hands from vibrating. Such an incident can easily land me in his study where I receive the beating of my life.
I squeezed my dress tighter while I awaited his next words because the next two hours of my life were hanging on those words but never in a million years would I have guessed the words that rolled out of his mouth.
"Your bags have been packed, you leave tonight"
My eyes shot up at once. I thought it strange that he decided to celebrate my birthday and make my identity known. Dare I say, I was even hopeful that now that I was acknowledged, the constant abuse would stop but… I was wrong.
"… Father"
I fell on my knees, my palms pressed together like two loaves of bread, I pleaded. "Father, please… please reconsider"
I knew Regulus better than anyone, better than his wife, better than his three sons, and certainly better than his niece, my cousin!
They all stood watching, gathered around as I groveled at his feet, even though I know better than anyone here that Regulus never changes his mind. Once the words are out, only a miracle can reverse them!
Yet, I pleaded "Please Father… what have I done? I'll change, I'll be better, I'll come running when you call. I promise to be good" I rubbed my palms frantically.
I looked up with misty eyes and caught his gaze which was filled with its usual hatred towards me. He stared down at me with contempt like I was a piece of gum stuck at the bottom of his shoes.
"Do you really think I'm kicking you out because you kept me waiting?" At the sound of his voice, my crying ceased and I sniffed my nose trying to process his words. If it wasn't about that, then what's going on?
This wasn't an exaggeration, he could get me kicked out just because of that but it seems there's another reason.
"You're getting married!"
The bombshell dropped on me like a debacle, shock waves vibrated through my body. "Wh-what?" I stuttered.
"It slipped my mind to tell you at our last dinning. I arranged a marriage between you and Mr. Mallow. Enjoy your party for a little while and the driver will take you to his house tonight. You sign the marriage certificate and live there from now on"
Every word he uttered pierced through me like a spear. He said it ever so casually but they were brutally crafted to slice through my heart.
Living in the Whitemore's mansion has been hell and I want more than anything to escape but not like this!
The Mr. Mallow he's speaking of so calmly is actually old enough to be my grandfather!
A man in his late seventies who is known for acquiring females like commodities most of which ends up dead!
That is the man he's marrying me off even though I'm supposed to have a fiancé from the fourth most prominent family in the continent…
Ah, of course he has been kept aside for Carla, my cousin. So this is my fate then.
My lips quivered from fear and terror, what ever Regulus says goes, his words are like the law itself and that alone sealed my fate but I was determined to fight against all odds.
"I beg you father… please reconsider!"
My groveling led me to grab his legs and I sobbed continuously but he suddenly yanked me off and my butt landed with a thud.
"Don't ruin my mood! This is a fine evening and I want it kept as such. Hearing you call me father is foul enough, don't incur my wrath by being a nuisance…"
I stayed quiet and he continued.
"…You remain the only stain of my life, Lyla. The mistake I wish everyday to undo. Your blood is tainted by the vile taste of peasantry and I feel nothing but disgust when I look at you, so be useful to me the only way you can, get married to Mr. Mallow as a reward for acknowledging you tonight, it's the least you can do for all the years I've raised you"
Should I laugh or cry? A mistake he says… but that's a bloody lie!
I want to scream at the top of my lungs and reveal that I know it all! I know all about how he abused my mother who was a maid in this household. Regulus was married to his wife, Beatrice and they already had two sons yet his wanton eyes lingered on my mother.
Why her, out of all the maids?
Her beauty was exceptional, my mother was from a fallen aristocrat's family, their fall from grace to grass was so great she had to become a maid to other aristocrats to make ends meet and that's where this beast of a man, Regulus couldn't keep his hands to himself!
Seeing a maid so fair, with skin as smooth as cream and hands ever so delicate that even the hard labor couldn't dent, his unbridled desires got the best of him and he had his way with her, time and time again until the seed he planted began to germinate but my mother, Lilian didn't tell Regulus, she quit and ran away but a few years after my birth she died and left a note and that's how I ended up in Whitemore's mansion, to be raised by this monster.
How I discovered all these are not important right now, but Regulus slandering my mother and calling her a mistress who drugged and seduced him to have me is a crime worthy of death!
All I wanted to do was scream it out but I couldn't, so I dragged my knees on the marble floor and crouched at Beatrice's feet.
"Please… mother, help me beg father, help me please, I don't want to marry such a man. Please! I'll do anything you ask, you know I've been a good daughter, I'm good with painting too… please!"
My desperate pleas landed on her six-inch red bottoms stilettos and the ire silence mocked my frustration.
Disdain was plastered on her face and I knew I was no better than a dog barking at a wall so I crawled over to my first brother, Frederick.
"Brother, please help me beg Dad, I can't be taken away, you know I won't last a day in that house. Please help me"
I held onto her feet with all my strength, Frederick was the perfect heir, maybe his words might have an impact on Regulus, or he suggest a favorable alternative.
I was still in the middle of begging when Harry's voice. My second brother interjected.
"For all our sakes please stop this madness!" My breath hitched and I forced my tears into silent wails.
"Can't you use your senses for once? Isn't it obvious that the reason Father wants you to marry Mr. Mallow is support for Frederick's campaign to be Mayor? Think of this as being a big help to the family, who knows? It might just be for this very purpose that Father took you in from the start!"
A surge of helplessness ran through me, his words were fanning the flames in my heart.
At that moment, Frederick got up with his phone on his ear and excused himself and Harry followed, leaving Basil, my third brother, and my cousin, Carla.
Before I could say a word Basil shot me a death glare and threatened.
"Don't even think of begging me, you should know, no one can change Father's mind. Just accept your fate"
A bitter smile dragged my tear-stained cheeks. Accept my fate?… huh.
I didn't bother begging Carla but she did what she does best, and that's being a shrew b*tch!
She walked over and lowered herself to my level, past me on a handkerchief, and flashed a broad smile.
"You shouldn't cry and ruin your makeup, tonight's your big day… I mean, you're getting married after all"
She leaned a bit closer and said for only my ears to hear.
"You poor unfortunate soul, you really thought anyone would be on your side? Don't be ridiculous. Let me be the first to give you my blessings… Congratulations on losing Louis to me"
Her words landed on me like a pile of bricks and at that instant, my eyes widened in disbelief as I heard Regulus command the guards.
"Take her, send her over to Mr, Mallow now!"
My behavior must've angered him! He's not even willing to let me stay for the rest of my party!
I was instantly bundled up and forced into the car which already had my stuff.
Now on my way to be delivered to my death!
[What happens next?]
What the hell is this moderator voice in my head?!
Oh… that's right, how could I forget that the moderator voice in my head is mine and this story is mine. Lyla Whitemore.
Dear readers, can I tell you a secret? Promise not to tell anyone?
Alright… come closer.
The truth is, I'm in a bloody coma!
