Resurgence: eternal evolution

Chapter 3: chapter 3

The battle had left Carven in ruins. The once-thriving city was a smoldering wasteland filled with the corpses of monsters and fallen civilians. Smoke hung heavy in the air, and the cries of survivors echoed through the shattered streets.

Jaren, Eli, and Clara stood amidst the destruction, their bodies trembling from exhaustion. Their powers, though newfound, had been pushed to the brink as they fought alongside other awakened humans against the invading monsters.

But then, the sky darkened once more.

A piercing roar split the air, shaking the earth beneath their feet. Clara staggered, clutching her steel rod as she looked to the heavens. Emerging from the clouds, its massive wings spanning the horizon, was a beast unlike any they had encountered.

"What... what is that?" Eli stammered, his voice trembling.

"Dragon," Jaren said, his voice grim. The word felt foreign on his tongue, yet it fit perfectly.

The creature descended with terrifying speed, its scales shimmering like molten silver. As it opened its maw, a deep crimson glow emanated from its throat.

"MOVE!" Jaren shouted, pushing Clara and Eli aside just as a torrent of fire hotter than the sun incinerated the area they'd been standing in.

The draconic breath carved a fiery scar into the city, vaporizing buildings and reducing hundreds of people to ash in an instant. Screams of terror filled the air as the survivors scrambled for cover.

Jaren got to his feet, his face streaked with soot. "This thing isn't like the others. It's too powerful."

Eli clenched his fists, flames flickering weakly from his palms. "We can't just run! If we don't stop it, there won't be a city left!"

Clara looked at the beast, her breath hitching. The cold energy within her was all but depleted. "How do we even hurt something like that?"

The dragon's arrival ignited a desperate resolve in the surviving awakened humans. Those who still had the strength to fight gathered together, pooling their abilities for one last stand.

"Spread out!" a man shouted, electricity crackling from his hands. "We need to keep it distracted!"

Jaren joined the fray, his combat instincts taking over. He barked orders, coordinating the attacks of the scattered fighters. Clara and Eli stayed close, supporting him as best they could.

The dragon's roars drowned out their voices, and its massive tail swept through the battlefield, crushing cars and debris alike. A group of fighters attempted to pin the creature down, their combined elemental powers blasting at its wings and legs.

A woman with a bow loosed an arrow imbued with wind energy, striking the dragon's eye. The beast reared back in pain, unleashing another fiery breath that consumed three fighters in an instant.

"Fall back!" Jaren yelled, pulling Clara out of the blast radius.

"No!" Clara cried, her hands trembling. She raised her rod, and a spike of ice shot toward the dragon's neck. It shattered harmlessly against its scales.

"Damn it, it's too strong!" Eli shouted, his flames flickering weakly.

"We have to keep going," Jaren said, his voice firm despite the despair around him. "If we don't stop it here, it'll kill everyone."

The battle stretched on, and exhaustion began to take its toll. The awakened humans fought valiantly, their powers combining in a chaotic symphony of destruction.

A man wielding earth powers created massive stone pillars, slamming them into the dragon's legs to hinder its movement. A pair of twins used their water abilities to cool its molten scales, creating temporary vulnerabilities.

The dragon let out a guttural roar, shaking the battlefield as its molten scales shimmered ominously.

Eli turned to Jaren and Clara, his voice steady despite his condition. "Get everyone out of here. I'll hold it off."

"No!" Clara screamed, tears streaming down her face. "You can't do this alone! You'll die!"

Eli smirked, though blood dripped from the corner of his mouth. "Someone has to buy you time. This thing's not stopping until we stop it. If it's my life or everyone else's, the choice is obvious."

Jaren stepped forward, gripping his sword tightly. "We can fight it together. Don't pull this hero crap on us!"

Eli shook his head. "You've seen it, Jaren. We're barely scratching it. But I've got one more card to play."

Without waiting for an argument, Eli clenched his fists. Flames erupted from his body, spiraling upward like a raging inferno. His muscles bulged unnaturally as the fire around him intensified.

"What are you doing?!" Clara shouted, panic in her voice.

Eli's voice was firm, but there was a faint tremor of pain. "Boost... x 100."

The transformation was immediate. Eli's body began to crack under the strain, blood pouring from his skin as his aura grew brighter and hotter. His flames, once barely able to scorch the dragon's scales, now roared with the intensity of a sun.

The dragon turned its massive head toward Eli, its eyes narrowing. It sensed the shift in power.

"Come on, you oversized lizard!" Eli roared, launching himself forward at blinding speed.

The dragon unleashed a torrent of fire, its breath capable of reducing entire buildings to ash. But Eli was faster. He zipped through the flames, appearing in front of the dragon's face and slamming a fiery punch into its jaw.

BOOM!

The force sent the dragon reeling, its massive body stumbling backward. For the first time, it let out a pained growl.

Eli didn't stop. His fists moved like blurs, each strike glowing brighter as he poured everything into his attacks. The dragon lashed out with its claws, but Eli dodged with inhuman speed, leaving streaks of fire in his wake.

Jaren and Clara watched in stunned silence as Eli's relentless assault continued.

"He's... hurting it," Jaren muttered, disbelief in his voice.

Clara shook her head. "At what cost? Look at him!"

Eli's body was failing. Every movement tore his muscles apart, every strike sending shockwaves of pain through him. Blood dripped from his eyes, nose, and mouth, but he didn't stop.

Finally, with a deafening roar, Eli focused all his energy into one last attack. Flames surged around him, forming a massive sphere of fire.

"This is it!" Eli screamed, his voice hoarse. "You're not walking away from this!"

He hurled himself at the dragon's chest, the fiery sphere detonating on impact. The explosion was blinding, engulfing both Eli and the dragon in a sea of flames.

---

When the smoke cleared, the dragon's once-impenetrable scales were charred and cracked. Its chest glowed red, the exposed flesh vulnerable.

Clara didn't waste a second. Rushing forward, she unleashed her freezing energy, encasing the dragon's legs in solid ice. "Now's your chance, Jaren!"

Jaren roared as he charged, his sword aimed directly at the exposed wound. With a mighty leap, he plunged the blade deep into the dragon's heart. The beast let out one final, ear-splitting cry before collapsing to the ground.

As the dust settled, Clara ran to Eli, who lay motionless amidst the rubble.

"Eli!" she cried, her hands glowing as she poured healing magic into his broken body. "Stay with me!"

Jaren knelt beside her, his face grim. "He gave everything he had... Is he—?"

"He's alive," Clara said, her voice trembling. "But barely. I can't restore his stamina. He's completely drained."

The dragon's massive corpse lay in the background, a reminder of the cost of their victory. The city was in ruins, and the survivors gathered around, staring in awe at the fallen beast and the three figures who had defeated it.

Eli's cracked lips moved weakly. "Did... we win?"

Clara smiled through her tears. "Yeah, you idiot. We won."

With those words, Eli passed out, his body finally succumbing to exhaustion. Jaren carried him as Clara led the way, their victory bittersweet as they looked out over the devastated city.

The battle was over, but the scars it left behind would remain.
