Chapter 52: A Gift from Legacy
Two peaceful days had passed since the celebration. The excitement had calmed, but the pride remained—Ray's home still radiated warmth from the joy of his accomplishment. He had returned to a routine of study, training, and quiet planning with Pidgeotto and Dratini, now officially his partner.
But that calm was interrupted late one morning by a firm knock at the door.
Ray answered it to find a deliveryman standing with a crisp white uniform emblazoned with the emblem of PokéTrans Secure Logistics, a company known for transporting sensitive Pokémon-related materials—often used by researchers, elite trainers, or government organizations.
"Delivery for Ray Virel," the man said, holding out a digital tablet.
Ray blinked, caught off guard. "Uh—yeah, that's me."
"I need your signature. Contents require confirmation of transfer to named recipient."
Ray signed the form, and the man carefully handed over a sturdy silver-gray container—long, with rounded corners, reinforced edges, and a glowing temperature control panel. At its center was a clear dome that revealed what was inside:
A Pokémon Egg.
His eyes widened.
"A transport incubator?" he muttered.
The deliveryman simply nodded. "Instructions are attached. Have a good day."
Ray closed the door gently, still stunned. His parents turned from the kitchen.
"What is that?" his mother asked, wiping her hands on a towel.
Ray placed the container on the table, still looking at it as if it might vanish.
"I… don't know," he said honestly. "But I have a guess."
He reached for his Pokégear and dialed quickly.
Within moments, Professor Oak's familiar, cheerful voice came through.
"Ray! I take it you've received the package?"
Ray exhaled. "So it is from you."
Oak chuckled. "Indeed. Consider it the second part of the promise I made when you passed your Intermediate exam."
Ray glanced at the egg inside the container. It was gently speckled with faint red-orange and silver markings, almost glowing in the light. "It's… incredible. But what is it?"
Oak's tone became more thoughtful, more reverent. "That egg holds the offspring of my own Charizard—a partner who has been by my side for decades. The other parent is a rare and powerful dragon-type from another region, one whose lineage is as noble as it is strong. The union of those two Pokémon… is something special. Unique."
Ray's heart thudded. "You're giving it to me?"
"I'm entrusting it to you," Oak corrected kindly. "Because I believe you'll raise it with the dedication and wisdom I've seen in you time and time again. This isn't a gift to use—it's a life to protect."
Ray's eyes softened. "I understand. I'll take care of it with everything I have."
"Good," Oak said. "And remember: some Pokémon aren't just strong—they carry history in their blood. That egg may one day hatch into something remarkable… but the bond you build will matter far more than power alone."
Ray nodded, even though Oak couldn't see him. "Thank you, Professor. Really."
His mother and father stood nearby, quiet but visibly moved. They hadn't expected such a precious gift from someone as esteemed as Professor Oak. Ray's father stepped forward and placed a hand on Ray's shoulder.
"We'll make space for a safe incubation setup," he said. "We're proud of you."
As the call ended, Ray picked up the incubator again and gently cradled it in his arms, carrying it toward his room with great care.
He didn't know when it would hatch. He didn't even know exactly what would hatch.
