Chapter 34: The great one
"Wait, I only saw you turn into that alien bounty hunter. You mean there's another one?" Gwen asked, her curiosity piqued.
Ben smiled, a smug expression on his face. "Yeah, Fred actually lost twice," he said with a light chuckle.
"Achoo!" Fred sneezed as he turned back to normal. "Someone talking 'bout me or what?" he remarked, looking down at the giant tick. "Damn, this looks gross," he said, reaching down with his left arm to grab the alien tick.
The three aliens tried to defend their great one, attacking Fred with all their might. But Fred didn't feel a thing. "Get your filthy hands off—ahh," the tall alien said, firing lasers at Fred's chest from a device on his head. Fred swatted him into space with his right hand. "Knock it off," he said.
He proceeded to crystallize his left hand like Diamondhead's arm, encasing the alien tick in diamond as he pulled it out. "Nooo!" the other two aliens shouted, panicking.
Like pulling out a weed, Fred extracted the giant tick, its root-like tentacles stretching deep into the earth. "Woah, this thing dug that far already," Gwen remarked, watching in awe as the tentacles flailed around, smashing into everything they could reach.
Noticing the damage the tick could cause, Fred threw it up into the sky. The tick, with its current size, eclipsed the sun. As it hovered in mid-air, its tentacles stretched down, trying to pull itself back to the ground. Fred didn't allow it. He blocked the tentacles with a barrier, encapsulating it in a spherical shield.
"At first, I was going to create a black hole inside you just to test out a move I've thought up. But now, looking at you," Fred muttered as he raised his hand at the tick still trapped inside the barrier. A magic circle formed from his hand. "I'll use alchemy to turn you into Taydenite," he said. The tick's body shrank and crystallized, losing roughly half its size before completely turning into Taydenite. The barrier disappeared along with the crystallized alien tick.
Fred's body shrank as he turned back to normal. With the problem now handled, the earth began to return to normal, though the hole made by the alien tick remained. Using some earth magic, Fred fixed it. At this point, earth magic was becoming his strong suit, second only to creating things with pure mana.
As the gang celebrated, relieved that the earth was no longer doomed, the three alien followers of the tick approached them, looking menacing. "You! You destroyed the great one!" they accused.
"Great what now?" Gwen remarked, but Ben smiled, thinking he still had time to shine. His watch turned green, and he quickly activated the dial. But what the aliens said next left them all confused.
"Hail to the new great one!" the tall alien began, the others following suit.
"Uh, what now?" the gang remarked in unison.
"Since you destroyed the great one, that makes you the new great one..." the tall alien explained.
"Yeah, can I refuse?" Fred asked, but the three aliens looked at him with puppy dog eyes, wanting to serve him.
"Hmmmm," Fred thought, wondering what benefit these guys could possibly have for him. "Wait a minute," he said out loud. "You guys want to take my ship, don't you?"
The look everyone gave him was one of utter disbelief. "We're the good guys, right?" Gwen retorted.
"Most certainly not, oh great one. Although, aside from that spaceship, we have no other means of travel or accommodation," the Stinkfly-looking alien admitted.
"I knew it," Fred said, immediately summoning a barrier and encasing them, sending them to one of his pocket dimensions.
"Okay, I see what you mean now," Ben said, shaking his head.
"Are you sure you want to be a plumber with that attitude?" Gwen asked Fred, raising an eyebrow.
"It's fineee!" Fred said, suddenly changing his mood. "And besides, it's not like I did something wrong here. I'm not robbing the blind, am I? Now, those guys destroyed planets for a living. Stripping them of their spaceship was an act of kindness."
"Ben's cousin took the Omnitrix, and no one said anything. Why can't I claim a prize from the villains I've defeated? Is that so wrong?" Fred thought to himself. Clearly, there was no changing his mind.
"I'll make this one into a luxury liner," Fred smiled.
"By the way, I'm curious about what other alien you unlocked for Ben," Max asked, looking at both Ben and Fred.
They exchanged mischievous smiles. "Hehe, it's a surprise," they both said.
"Well, that was a waste of time," Gwen remarked.
"Come on, if we head back, we can still make the most of the time that's left," Max said, leading the way. "I wonder if those worms are still there. They'd make a nice snack while I prepare for dinner," he added.
"I forgot about that," Gwen said, her face scrunching up in disgust, mirroring Ben and Fred's expressions. There was no way they were eating that stuff.
"You got any food with you?" they asked Fred.
"Probably, let me check," he said, pulling out some salads and sandwiches.
"Really?" Ben asked, disappointed.
"What? I don't always eat junk food, you know," Fred remarked. "Just tell me what you want, and I'll give it to you," he added, putting the salads and sandwiches back.
They headed back to the rust bucket. Before they got far, Fred turned back and quickly stored the ship the aliens had arrived in, adding it to his collection.
The gang returned to the rust bucket, determined to make the most of their remaining day. Ben enthusiastically tested out his new alien forms, while the others savored the rare chance to experience normal camping. Despite the chaos that often surrounded them, today felt almost serene.
As the sun began to set, the rust bucket was already on the move, heading to its next destination. The golden rays cast a warm glow inside the vehicle, filling everyone with a sense of calm and contentment.
"Grandpa, look!" Ben muttered joyously, his eyes sparkling with excitement as he showed Max a game trailer on his device. This little stunt caused Max to momentarily lose focus. Thanks to the upgraded rust bucket, even as Max nearly turned the wheel and almost crashed into an oncoming car, the vehicle maintained control and steadiness.
"Ben, be careful with that," Max admonished, regaining his composure.
Ben quickly apologized, his excitement palpable. "I'm sorry, Grandpa. I was just excited for the release of Sumo Slammers 2.1," Ben explained, looking at Max with a hopeful expression that was impossible to resist.
Max sighed, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Alright, we'll go there," he finally conceded, unable to deny his grandson's eager gaze.
Ben's face lit up with joy. "Thanks, Grandpa!" he exclaimed, practically bouncing in his seat.
Gwen and Fred exchanged amused glances. "Looks like someone can't wait to play," Gwen teased.
Fred chuckled, "I guess it's not just about fighting aliens all the time. Even heroes need a break."
