Chapter 11: To Investigate
Eclair decided to scout the forest immediately. The demon's traits were easy to discern. According to the Village Chief, the demon was of small size and had a fish head.
It probably has dead eyes and a grotesque combination of human and fish. Eclair couldn't imagine it and didn't want to.
Eclair felt his body lightly manoeuvre around the trees, he lightly stepped over the ground as he jumped from side to side of trees.
He started from the uttermost left side going all to the right. If the demon had the body of a human, there's no doubt that it might have some sensory capabilities too.
As Eclair was hopping his clothes got caught on a tree. Thankfully he was surrounding his body with Omi in case of any attacks or else his clothing would've been torn.
"Ah dammit," he whispered.
He wouldn't have been caught if he was paying attention properly, now there seems to be a lapse in judgement after all, he hadn't slept for a whole day.
Eclair held his head and sighed, maybe he should rest. There are still days before he should return to the Academy. Maybe he got so used to Solas' Summoned beast that he got complacent.
'Right, I should spend at least a moment to rest.'
As Eclair's about to leave he heard rustling, Eclair's head snapped at the direction of the noise and immediately expanded his Senses.
There, he felt something and it was fast, very fast. Eclair knew that no animal is this quick so without hesitation he decided to pursue it.
The demon was fast enough that it was escaping Eclair's senses. He had to double the efforts just to catch up.
'Damn it, another middle class?'
Eclair gritted his teeth and had more Omi imbued to his legs, going after the middle-class demon.
I just need to attack it once!
Eclair's Art was flexible, he could add many conditions and even selective restrictions to Mold a Technique that he could throw without being held back.
One of the only solidified rules of The Mold was that in any technique, even with the conditions and restrictions, he would not be able to remove the key purpose of those Techniques.
A Fireball is a Fireball, an Ice Lance is an Ice Lance, and a Magic Bolt is a Magic Bolt. However, adding another purpose like the fireball not only burning but also freezing an area it impacted, is also adding another completely different purpose other than shaping it or adding conditions to its usage─ must need a restriction to work.
Once Eclair had a clear sight of the demon, he slashed through the air and an arc of energy shot out.
"Ah…!"
A pained voice rang out and Eclair had to stop moving. He was… in disbelief of what he heard. It was a human voice, a clear human voice.
He looked at the 'demon' he was chasing, it was a naked girl with a fin on her head and a tail sticking out her back that was aquatic.
"What?"
Eclair couldn't help but look with disbelief. The demon wasn't even exuding that much miasma, in fact, he couldn't feel any miasma at all, though that's no reason for him not to kill it.
Rather he was in disbelief because demons are not supposed to be human-like… those below high-class demons are supposed to. They can take humanoid forms but none of them could ever have a majority of their body be human at all.
But this one, it was clear. The child-like demon had a face full of pain and eyes filled with tears. She was giving a fearful look while there was some sort of juice and small seeds stuck near her lips.
"What… "
"Ahh…!!!"
She screamed and her head turned into a fish and her body soon transformed, she turned into a shark and her whole body dipped down the ground as if it was water and swam away.
Eclair couldn't move for a second, he was more than surprised, to change form from animalistic to human that quick.
Aren't the only demons who could do that are…
'Absolute class…'
Eclair shook his head, there's no way an absolute class would take damage from that single attack from him.
"Oh… "
Eclair could feel the demons' presence, or rather the child's presence. She was quite far now and Eclair wasn't in the mood to pursue.
He sighed, at least the condition to track whomever his attack hit once was in great effect.
"12 hours…"
Twelve hours is the maximum time his Omi Art would last on the child. By then, he should get some rest and try something, it wasn't right for the child or demon to be here.
And in that form? Eclair remembered the novel, he knew that Demons that take human form are those that are at the pinnacle of Omi control.
And it's not just human form either, they can change their form to their liking if they want. And since the novel Eclair read is a light novel most forms taken would be human.
Eclair sighed heavily and decided to just go back to the village to rest. He looked at the forest one last time before dashing away.
In the deepest part of the forest, where the river gave water to the fauna that needed it lay a child, she was emaciated, her ribs poking out of her skin and her limbs as thin as the branches of some trees.
She greedily drank water from the river as she dunked her head down the stream.
She whined as she touched the wound on her back, though it was visibly healing fast enough to be discerned by the naked eye. Even then, the child's tears fell.
Meanwhile, Eclair has finally returned to the village. His room was at the Village chief's house, which was large enough to house multiple people in the same room.
Though, Eclair could tell it was only occasionally used.
"Dammit! That brat made it harder to comb these things!"
Eclair could hear from the fishermen's house, his words were all filled with rage, annoyance and something similar to spite.
Eclair sighed, deciding to ignore it and went to his room. He looked at the time and went to a girl who seemed to be always on standby inside the Village chief's house.
"Wake me up six hours later," Eclair told her.
"Y-yes!" The girl replied.
