Chapter 1755: Up The Mountains
Ning and Matthew made their way up the mountain range while being carried by two undead. With the undead carrying them, they could go up the mountain range without getting tired at all.
Ning had his Life Sense active at all times, searching for any humans they could find.
It was entirely possible that the people stationed on the mountain as guards had not heard about the war's ending. It had, after all, only been a couple of days since then. They may not have had the time to learn about it.
When Ning and Matthew reached the peak of the first mountain, Ning was stunned to see that they had to go through a few dozen mountains before they arrived on the other side.
"Are we going to have to go through all of them?" Ning asked, confused. If this was the sort of path that was available to them, then it might have been faster to go to Largan's Pass and then take the long way around. The undead would definitely move faster on flat land than they would in these mountains.
"No, there's a small pass that has been turned into a supply line around that area," Matthew said as he pointed a little to the right, around a bunch of mountains where there seemed to be a natural space.
"We just need to cross those three mountains, and we will be at the pass in no time. As long as we manage to get there, it's a smooth journey afterward."
Ning nodded. "And what about the people on this mountain? We already arrived at the top, and there's no one here."
Matthew looked around. "I know a lot about fortifications on these mountains, but I don't know enough to know where everything is," he said. "I do know that scouts stay in tree houses, built to hide from incoming enemies. See those boulders there?"
Ning turned around and looked a few steps down where a bunch of boulders were stuck into the earth. They appeared to be regular rocks that anyone could find anywhere, but Ning suspected otherwise.
"Those are the boulders they toss down from here?" he asked.
Matthew nodded. "If an army tries to get up here, they will have a difficult time."
Ning could imagine that. Multiple boulders weighing multiple tons, coming down at a harrowing speed, would be enough to kill tons of enemy combatants.
It was an excellent defensive measure.
"Well, I saw no one along the way, so we may find more people up ahead," Ning said. "We should continue."
Matthew looked around one last time and nodded. With a gentle tug of the undead's hair he was riding, he began moving.
Ning quickly overtook him, staying before him. With his Life Sense, it was vital that he stay ahead of the man. At times, Ning wondered if he was hidden from the scouts, which was why he hadn't been noticed. He had the Talisman of Concealment, after all.
However, upon thinking a bit more, he quickly realized that the talisman wouldn't help him. He and Matthew were not only making noises to draw attention to themselves, but he was also extending the range of his talisman, thus, in turn, lowering its effectiveness.
The talisman very quickly lost effectiveness when used to conceal more than just the person wearing it.
Climbing to the top of the mountain took the undead around an hour. Climbing down should have been faster, but considering the undead's lack of decision-making capability, they instead became slower as they needed to avoid more trees and rocks along the way. There were more places to stumble and fall, which neither Ning nor Matthew wanted to happen.
They would rather be slow and careful than be without an undead.
They arrived at the second mountain some time later. Still, it was only morning, with the sun barely up on the horizon. They had left very early in the morning, after all.
Ning continued to search for people with his Life Sense. They were halfway up the mountain when finally, something other than Matthew and the two undead appeared in his Life Sense that was not an animal.
Ning turned his head toward a tree left of him and saw its thick leaves covering its branches. Inside that tree was a man.
Before Ning could call him or tell Matthew about him, Ning felt something grab onto him. He was pulled out from the undead and slammed onto the tree.
Before he was slammed, Ning turned his body into iron, protecting himself from most of the damage. It still hurt a lot to be slammed onto the tree.
"Ning!" Matthew shouted and looked around, searching for what had happened.
"Person!" Ning shouted. "In that treeeeee—"
He was tossed into the air before he could tell Matthew about the scout.
Ning flew high, above the canopy of the trees, and began falling down. At this height, even if he did turn into iron, he would likely be wounded in a major way.
Without missing a beat, he reached for his bracelet and summoned a beast. A black snake slithered out from his bracelet, wrapping around his wrist as it emerged.
Ning quickly pointed down and used the snake's powers just as he hit the ground.
Immediately, the shadow on the ground turned into a pool of darkness that swallowed Ning entirely. Seconds later, he popped back out, and he landed safely on the ground beside the dark spot.
The dark spot vanished, turning into a black snake that slithered around Ning's legs, climbing back onto his arm.
Ning lifted his arm outside, and shadow enveloped him once more. Then, in the next moment, he vanished.
When Ning reappeared, he arrived from the shadow of the leaves on the tree, right behind the person who was on the tree.
Ning grabbed the person from behind and turned himself into iron, fully restricting them.
"Try tossing me onto the tree again, and I will make sure you die with me."
