Chapter 5: Chapter 2 (Part 1)
Being a Lyondel was strange, or at least that is what Ryuji thought. It was weird being in a fantasy world, getting used to the magic and the strange creatures, it was even weirder living on an estate that was positioned on an isle of floating islands, and far stranger to be a 6 year old boy again after coming from a world where he was 65; but somehow the strangest thing of all…was being an aristocrat.
Ryuji had now been in Illverstand for 6 years. It had been 6 years of being, well, a child once again, but he retained all of the memories and cognition from his old life. Meaning he was fully aware when his butt was being wiped or he suddenly would throw up, or…when he needed to feed. His mind was 65 years old, but his body was that of a boy. For a long time he had no choice but to be an observer and he did observe as much as he could. He had learned much about this new land and about the strange energy they called magic, and had even adapted to it. Ryuji figured it was because he was a child again, but he was able to retain and obtain information at a much more rapid rate than before. Because of his mind, he learned to read at the age of 2, and from then he absorbed as much about the world as he could. He learned that Illverstand was a conglomeration of nations that were separated into two different categories, Terrans and Sklgrans. The Terrans were the people of the land, they were mostly hardworking folk and adventurers that tended to most of what he would call "blue collar" labor. The Sklgrans were more enlightened (but in actuality snobby people). They were once Terrans who had achieved something great or worthwhile in the pursuit of money or magical principles and so they ascended into the sky to "look down on those below." Or at least that is what the books Ryuji read said. There were many different nations among the Terrans but only one among the Sklgran: Ingla. Ingla was the ruling country, the monarchs, to be even a member of this country automatically put you in authority over anyone that was a Terran. It was the perfect recipe for oppression, or at least that is what Ryuji thought. He was 'fortunate' enough to be born as a Lyondel, one of the prominent families within Ingla. The Lyondels were a dukedom that was within the cabinet of the empress of the Ingla, meaning she was the monarch over all of Illverstand. As Ryuji grew, he learned about the pressures of being an aristocrat, and a prominent one at that. He was taught to sit well, to eat well, to ride well, to play and create well, but most importantly: he was taught to use magic well.
To Ryuji's surprise, and pleasure, magic was an inherent trait in this world. Each person in Illverstand was born with an innate pool of magic. Each pool of magic has different alignments and affinities as well as different amounts. Most people within Ingla are born with a larger pool of mana, or at least have a unique magical affinity. Most Terrans are born with smaller, elemental forms of magic that they make use of for different types of work. As far as Ryuji could tell the Sklgrans used their magic mainly for recreation and fun, to hold competitions and magically oppress the Terrans. The Terrans put their magic to work, they learned to master it to a specific craft, some used it for artisanry which was highly coveted by the Sklgrans. Ryuji was not a fan or the way people were oppressed but at the age of six he knew he was not able to do much about it currently; when he got older he would change that.
The most daunting thing of all, which Ryuji realized he probably should have paid more attention in orientation with Eichi, was that Ryuji being a half-elf was not…common. Most of the Sklgrans were higher-born races (or at least high-born to this society). Elves, Celestials, Dryads and Tryads, naturally beautiful creatures. Most of the Terrans were, well, Orcs…humans…goblin folk. They were looked down on for being disgusting and brutish, not that Ryuji would know since he never got to meet a Terran. But low and behold he was, unfortunately, to the Lyondel name, Half Terran. A matter which was often heavily debated in his household. Because of this fact Ryuji was not allowed to leave his estate, he had spent all six years of his life in its vast halls and libraries, training and growing, but since his parents had not settled on exactly what to do with him yet, here he stayed. Or at least, as far as they knew.
