Chapter 15: The First Trade and the Blue-Leaf Revelation
The days following Ser Kaelen's departure settled into a rhythm that Ren could only describe as blissful. The villagers, now organized by Elara, had established a system. Each morning, a different family would make the respectful pilgrimage up to the farm. They would leave a small gift—a loaf of bread, a pot of jam, a mended shirt—and Ren would happily give them their family's tomato for the day. He learned their names, asked about their children, and offered simple advice on their own meager gardens.
He was becoming less of a feared anomaly and more of a beloved, if eccentric, part of their community. The villagers, in turn, became his eyes and ears. They respectfully kept their distance but would report any strangers passing through Oakhaven to Lyra, who had become a permanent, silent fixture of the farm's landscape.
Lyra herself had finished reinforcing the shack, turning it from a hovel into a surprisingly cozy and sturdy cabin. She had then constructed her own small, unobtrusive shelter at the edge of the treeline—a dwelling so cleverly built into the landscape that it was nearly invisible. Most of her time was spent in a state of watchful readiness or practicing her formidable martial skills. She found that consuming one 'Sun's Fury' tomato each day allowed her to train for hours without tiring, pushing her abilities to new, unprecedented heights.
Ren, meanwhile, was focused on his carrots. The 'Blue Leaf' carrots, infused with the farm's potent energy, had grown at a startling rate. After only a few days, the rich soil was beginning to bulge around their bases, and their deep blue foliage was lush and tall.
"I think they're ready," Ren announced one sunny afternoon, his voice filled with the excitement of a child on his birthday.
"Already?" Lyra asked, pausing her knife-throwing practice. "It has been less than a week."
"That's how it works around here, apparently," Ren chuckled. He gripped the blue leaves of the largest carrot and gave a firm pull.
It slid from the earth with a satisfying shloooop sound.
The carrot was a thing of beauty. It was perfectly formed, about a foot long, with smooth, pale cream-colored skin. But the most remarkable thing was the faint, silvery light that seemed to emanate from within it, pulsing gently. It felt cool to the touch and smelled crisp, earthy, and sweet.
[First Harvest Complete: 'Energized Blue-Leaf Carrot']
[Quality: Superior (Upgraded from Common due to hyper-fertile soil and ambient life energy)]
[Effect: Enhances mental clarity and focus. Temporarily improves perception of fine details. Mildly restorative. And it's very crunchy.]
"Mental clarity and focus, huh?" Ren mused. "That sounds useful." He took out a small pocket knife, wiped it clean on his trousers, and sliced off a piece. He offered the first slice to Lyra.
She accepted it cautiously. As she bit into it, her eyes widened. The carrot was incredibly crisp and shockingly sweet. A cool, refreshing energy spread not through her body, but through her mind. It was like a fog she didn't even know was there had been instantly dispelled. The world seemed sharper, colors more distinct, her thoughts clearer and more ordered. She could suddenly recall with perfect clarity the face of every person she'd ever met.
"My thoughts…" she whispered. "They are… quiet. Ordered." For a trained assassin whose mind was a constant whirlwind of threat assessments and tactical calculations, this sudden, profound mental silence was a revelation.
Ren grinned, popping a slice into his own mouth. The effect was similar. The last vestiges of his life as Kenji Tanaka, the hazy memories and old stresses, seemed to snap into sharp focus, not as a burden, but as a neatly filed archive. His thoughts felt quicker, his planning for the farm's layout more intuitive. "Wow. These are great! They're like… brain food."
He happily pulled up the rest of the carrots, admiring each one. He had a whole basket full of the glowing, mind-enhancing vegetables. His first trade with the village had been a resounding success. Lily's grandmother's seeds, combined with his unique farm, had produced something wonderful.
It was then that he saw a familiar figure approaching. It was Ser Kaelen, but this time he was not alone. He was accompanied by a single, sturdy pack mule laden with covered goods, and he was dressed not in his intimidating plate armor, but in fine, yet practical, leather travel clothes. He looked less like a soldier and more like a wealthy merchant.
"Greetings, Ren! Lyra!" the knight called out, his voice warm and friendly.
"Ser Kaelen! You're back already?" Ren said, surprised.
"My duties are manifold," Kaelen replied with a polite smile. "And my Archmage was… most impressed with your gift. He insisted I return with a few of our own, as a token of friendship between neighbors."
He began to unload the mule. The first item was a set of masterfully crafted, high-carbon steel farming tools—a hoe, a spade, and a hand trowel, all perfectly balanced and razor-sharp.
"We heard you were looking for better tools," Kaelen said.
Ren's eyes lit up. He picked up the new hoe. It was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, but as he held it, it felt… inert. Lifeless. He compared it to his own "surprisingly sturdy" starter hoe. His old, rusty-looking hoe felt like an extension of his own body, humming with power. This new one was just a piece of metal and wood.
"They're very nice," Ren said politely, though he knew he'd probably never use them. "Thank you."
Kaelen, not sensing Ren's subtle disappointment, moved to the next item. He unveiled several large, carefully sealed sacks. "From the Royal Greenhouses. We have a variety of rare and exotic seeds. 'Sunstone' Wheat, which glitters in the sun. 'Moonpetal' Beans, which are best harvested at night. And this," he said, presenting a small, ornate wooden box, "is our most prized possession. A single 'King's Melon' seed. It is said to grow a fruit so sweet and juicy it can make a sad man weep with joy."
This time, Ren's excitement was entirely genuine. "Wow! New seeds! This is amazing! Thank you, Kaelen!" He eagerly took the sacks and the box, his mind already racing with plans for new crop rotations.
Finally, Kaelen presented a large, leather-bound, empty book. "And this. The Archmage thought you might appreciate a proper journal to document your… discoveries."
It was a thoughtful, well-researched, and perfectly executed diplomatic offering. Kaelen had brought gifts perfectly tailored to a farmer's interests, showing respect for Ren's chosen life.
"I don't have much to give you in return," Ren said, feeling a little overwhelmed by the generosity. "But… would you like to trade for some carrots? I just harvested them. They're good for the mind."
He held out one of the faintly glowing Blue-Leaf carrots.
Ser Kaelen's eyes widened. New produce? He accepted the carrot with a grateful nod. After his first bite, the same look of profound shock that had crossed Lyra's face appeared on his. His tactical mind, already sharp, felt like it had been honed on a celestial whetstone. He could suddenly visualize the entire map of the kingdom, troop movements, supply lines, all with perfect, effortless clarity.
"By the Crown…" he whispered. "Ren… what you do here… it's a miracle."
Ren just beamed, happy that his new friend enjoyed his carrots. "I'm glad you like it!"
The first official trade between the Overpowered Farmer and the Kingdom of Eldoria was complete. The Kingdom had given tools and seeds. Ren had given them a vegetable that could make their generals and mages exponentially more effective.
From Lyra's perspective, it was the most lopsided trade in history. The Kingdom thought they were being clever and generous. In reality, they had just given a god a few new toys, and in return, he had handed them a key to unlocking greater power than they could have possibly imagined.
And Ren, the god in question, was just excited he finally had a proper journal to write down his plans for the King's Melon patch.
