Chapter 34: A Shocking Discovery

Rose sat slumped in a chair in her mother's office, a quill lazily twirling between her fingers. Detention had been going on for what felt like hours, though it had likely only been thirty minutes. Beside her, Hermione was furiously scribbling away on her parchment, clearly determined to finish her lines as quickly as possible. Ron, on the other hand, looked like he was about to fall asleep, his quill dangling precariously from his fingers.

Harry, who wasn't even supposed to be in detention, had somehow managed to doze off in the corner, his head resting against the back of the chair. The soft rise and fall of his chest was the only movement in the room, making the whole scene oddly serene despite the looming figure of Lily Potter seated behind her desk.

"This is so unfair," Rose muttered under her breath, tossing her quill onto the desk. "We didn't even do anything that bad."

Lily, without looking up from the stack of parchment she was grading, raised an eyebrow. "Setting off dungbombs in Professor Snape's office isn't bad?"

Rose shrugged, casting a glance at Ron, who snickered. "He deserved it. He's always picking on Neville. And he never takes points from Slytherin."

Ron leaned back in his chair, a grin spreading across his face. "You should've seen his face, Mrs. Potter. It was priceless."

"I'm sure it was," Lily said dryly, her eyes not leaving her work. "But that doesn't excuse your behavior."

Hermione, who had been silent up until now, finally looked up, her quill still poised in mid-air. "I told you not to trust Peeves. He's always up to something."

Rose rolled her eyes. "Yeah, well, he said he'd help."

"And then he told on you," Hermione added with a pointed look. "Honestly, what did you expect?"

Rose crossed her arms over her chest, muttering under her breath about unfairness and how Peeves was a traitor. Ron just leaned back in his chair, looking entirely too pleased with himself.

"Peeves is a menace," Lily said, her tone firm. "And so are the three of you, apparently. Now, back to your lines."

Grumbling, Rose picked up her quill again, though she made no effort to actually write anything. The room lapsed into a tense silence, broken only by the sound of Hermione's quill scratching against parchment. Rose's gaze drifted to Harry, who was still blissfully asleep. An idea began to form in her mind, and a mischievous grin spread across her face.

Dipping her quill in ink, she leaned over and gently tickled Harry's nose. His face scrunched up, and with a soft sneeze, his eyes fluttered open. The moment he sat up, everyone froze.

"Blimey, Harry!" Ron exclaimed, his eyes wide as saucers. "You—you look like me!"

Harry blinked, his face now a perfect replica of Ron's. He reached up, touching his face in confusion. "What the—"

Hermione's mouth fell open, her quill dropping onto the desk. "Harry, your face! It's—it's Ron's!"

Rose's eyes widened in shock before a huge grin spread across her face. "You're a Metamorphmagus!"

Hermione frowned. "A what now?"

"A Metamorphmagus," Rose repeated, practically bouncing in her seat. "Harry can change his appearance at will. Our cousin Tonks can do it too!"

Ron leaned in, his curiosity piqued. "I've heard about them! But how? This is the first time this has happened, right?"

Harry nodded, his face slowly shifting back to his own. "Yeah, first time."

Hermione was still staring at Harry, her mouth agape. "You mean you can turn into anyone?"

Harry shrugged, looking down at his hands. "I guess so?"

Rose clapped her hands together, her excitement bubbling over. "This is so cool! You're already amazing at magic, and now you can do this?"

Harry groaned, leaning back in his chair. "Great. Just what I needed—another thing to make me stand out."

Ron nudged him, grinning. "Hey, at least you'll never have to worry about disguises."

Rose, still wide-eyed, leaned forward. "But how is this possible? Most Metamorphmagi discover their abilities when they're very young."

Lily, who had been watching the scene unfold with a mixture of amusement and concern, finally spoke up. "Harry, do you remember anything from when you were younger? Any accidental changes?"

Harry shook his head. "Not really. I mean, I always thought my hair grew back too fast after a bad haircut, but I just figured it was normal magic stuff."

Ron chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "You could be anyone! Imagine the pranks you could pull."

Hermione shot Ron a disapproving look. "That's not what it's for, Ron!"

Rose snickered. "It's still a good point."

Lily sighed, though there was a hint of a smile on her face. "Harry, this is a part of who you are. It's nothing to be afraid of. You'll just have to learn to control it."

Harry rubbed his temples, a weary expression on his face. "It's just... a lot. First, the whole 'magic prodigy' thing, and now this?"

Ron grinned. "Hey, at least you're not boring."

Harry gave him a half-hearted glare. "I'd take boring right now."

Rose nudged him playfully. "Come on, Harry. You've got to admit, this is kind of awesome."

Harry sighed, but a small smile tugged at his lips. "Maybe a little."

Lily clapped her hands, signaling the end of the impromptu family meeting. "Alright, back to your lines. Detention isn't over yet."

As the four of them settled back into their seats, the atmosphere in the room lightened considerably. The discovery of Harry's new ability had injected a sense of excitement into an otherwise tedious punishment, and Rose couldn't help but sneak glances at her brother, already imagining the many ways they could use his newfound talent to their advantage.
