Chapter 25: Pearl Harbor Fortification - 25
Aqua's POV
0700 Pearl Harbor base
Beep. Beep. I stretch and yawn... another morning. The base has expanded a lot. As I pull back the curtain in my room, I take in the view. Having an above-ground base has its perks—not that our underwater base lacks anything now that we've installed an optical camouflage ceiling. The ceiling mirrors the surface, displaying what the base perimeter sensors detect—kind of like Hogwarts' ceiling trick.
Anyway, as I walk toward the door and open it, my hoodie slides onto me with just a thought.
Helena decided to switch to a Support model. Ever since she changed her class, she's been attached to me—especially when I start designing something. Oh, speaking of which, I've got a new building design.
It's just a drone spire, but an automated one. This should help a lot with defense.
[Wargirl's Drones spire]
Cost: $1250 x 10 (Wargirls)
Power: -500 x 10 (Wargirls)
Hitpoints: 500 + 1000 (Wargirls)
Prerequisite: Wargirl's barrack
Purpose: Drones control
Armor Class: Defensive Structure
Weapon: 40x Infantry UAV / 4x Nanoswarm deployer
Range: 50 / 4
Additional Information: Can Gain Experience. Self repairing.
Since it's automated, we won't need anyone controlling it directly. As for hacking concerns, as long as the spire is on our network, there will always be T-Dolls monitoring it. Helena even sent me a knowledge package about network security.
And yes, as she predicted, I created a true manual aiming system with no assistance. Seriously, how did I end up transferring basic Fleet of Fog capabilities to the T-Dolls?
Anyway, enough of that. I step outside the residential building. This dorm doesn't have a cafeteria yet and not enough T-Doll station for that, but we're getting there as the base continues expanding above ground.
I look at another blueprint—technically my own design, but it's too large to be built for a forward base. Still, I want to build one. It's practically a megastructure, like the Railgun Launcher.
[Wargirl's Shield Generator - Experimental]
Cost: $5000 x 10 (Wargirls)
Power: -5,000 x 10 (Wargirls)
Hitpoints: 5000 + 5000 (Wave Front Armor)
Prerequisite: Wargirl's Wisdom Cube factory
Purpose: Shielding area
Armor Class: Ultra Heavy Structure / Wave Front Armor
Weapon: 'Aegis' Wave Front Armor
Range: 50
Additional Information: Shields all units and structures from external damage. Units inside can shoot outward. Can gain experience. Self-repairing.
I basically scaled up the Fleet of Fog's standard wave front armor and packed it with computational power to match the shield output. To be fair, I'm still struggling with the shield scaling off computational power instead of energy consumption. In theory, it should cover half the island, so I'll need two to cover the entire area.
As far as I tested in the designer app, it can handle nukes just fine. I mean, even normal Fleet of Fog ships can withstand nukes, so it went as expected when scaling up the defense. The main problem is that units can just move inside the shield, but artillery and long-range attacks are nullified. I'm not sure how it'll hold up against EMPs or telekinetics from Epsilon, though.
Also, I need to talk to the civilians. They're Americans who got taken over by the Pacific Front and now fall under my territory. Normally, civilians would flee, but apparently having just 2–3 Combat T-Dolls patrolling the city is enough for stability. Some even greet them.
Although, it's not really a patrol—it's just a pathway between the dock and our base.
Each one of these girls could destroy the city in under a minute. Civilians probably saw them in action during the Allies' base assault. Why there's no riot or panic, I can't figure out.
Maybe it's due to the low civilian casualties? I mean, no one died, and most of the injuries from Gawr's initial assault were healed afterward. Or maybe it's because the Fog Spire is still active, producing fog that rises from the ocean. It doesn't block sunlight completely, but it looks like a ground-level cloud that messes with satellite imaging.
I arrive at the gazebo where Amy and Helena are sitting, waiting for me with plates of dumplings. Wait—we have ingredients for dumplings?
"Hello, girls," I greet them as Amy gets up with a dumpling in her hand and pushes it toward my mouth. Okay? I bite into it—soft, juicy meat inside. I give it a solid 8. Better than street food dumplings. I grab another.
"Nice. It's good," I say with a thumbs-up. Amy smiles, and I'm pretty sure she made them. Otherwise, she wouldn't be stuffing my face with them.
Helena just shakes her head.
"Master~," Helena says, poking my cheek. "What's on today's agenda?"
I already feel the stress of having to do public speaking again. I eat another bite to de-stress.
The fog is still active. I don't have an equally effective alternative yet but I got idea for one. Luckily, we have sensors that pierce through the fog, and our optics are immune to its jamming effects so really all we seeing are perfectly normal streets and sight.
I finish the dumpling and start walking toward the city area, yawning again.
("Hestia, order the other MCVs to begin Phase 2. Make sure to retract the fortifications a kilometer back from the Allies' base on the east coast.") I said through Comm
Amy walks on my right and Helena on my left as we move forward.
So what is Phase 2? After hours of planning with Hestia and Helena yesterday evening, I decided to go full static defense. Now that we have stable income, I can afford to go overboard.
Speaking of income, we found more ore deposits on the surface—six on this island alone. In a 20 km underwater search radius, we only found two, both to the east. It's ironic that the surface base has more income than the main base.
Back to Phase 2—it includes walls, heavy turrets, artillery bunkers, emergency civilian shelters, anti-tsunami fortifications, shield generators for choke points, Fog Spires, and Drone Spires for shrouding and support.
I shake my head as we reach the edge of the city from the forest side. Citizens are walking about, some hesitant but mostly calm. There are fewer Allied soldiers than before, but I didn't forbid patrols, so that's fine.
We head toward the docks as I connect to the city grid. "To all citizens of Pearl Harbor, please evacuate the dock and surrounding beach areas. You have 10 minutes before the Abyssal closes the area," I announce through the speakers.
"I should put 20 to 50 T-Dolls on the islands..." I mutter as those T-Doll will help in a lot of things, patrolling, being combat readiness, etc. Amy chimes in, "I'll go clear out the dock workers. Be back soon, Aqua-chan." Meanwhile, Helena studies a 3D hologram map of the entire city and coast.
"So, master~ I assume bunker-style naval batteries?" Helena asks, projecting a hologram of a coastal bunker lined with corrosive missile launchers.
"Kinda, but more like I'm going to rebuild the whole coast," I reply, enlarging the map. Highlighting the coast and beach areas, I separate the dock section from the beaches on both sides. Good thing this city doesn't have a river, or my plan would be more complex.
Back to the task at hand, I'll create layers beneath the sand and bunker spots to house reactors underground. These bunkers will power the entire wall system, capable of rising up to stop landing invasions. The design is modular—Helena helped me make it.
[Wargirl's Multipurpose Bunker]Cost: $100 x10 (Wargirls)
Power: 0
Hitpoints: 500 + 1000 (Wargirls)
Prerequisite: MCV
Purpose: Multipurposes
Armor Class: Defensive Structure
Weapon: 2x Nanoswarm deployer
Range: 4
Additional Information: Self Repairing. 5 Modes loadout:
1. Wall reactor bunker - Allows creation of titanium alloy wall sections to link between Walled reactor bunkers.
2. Missiles bunker - House 4 Corrosive Missiles launchers inside.
3. Artillery bunker - the top part can be open revealing Railgun cannon that contain Cryo payload freezing the targets and surrounding area.
4. Stealth bunker - equipped with optical camouflage will blend in to surrounding, have 8 garrison slots and 1 PD Graviton Turret.
5. Standard Bunker - Have 16 garrison slots and 1 PD Graviton Turret.
It's a good setup—I haven't tested it in a real war scenario yet, but it seems solid so far.
"-er~ master~ Helena to master~" Helena teases, blowing air into my ear. I jolt. "Oops. Sorry," I mutter, focusing back on the map. Still 8 minutes left as Amy returns.
"Welcome back," I greet her as Amy nod as she standing like next to me guarding.
"So after the bunker wall line stops the initial landing force, the next step is turrets—a lot of turrets," I explain, marking multiple spots for PD turret placements, a whole 2 layered lines of it. It's a little crazy how I put PD turrets on most designs but still don't have a standalone version—so I make one.
[Wargirl's Point Defense turret]Cost: $100 x10 (Wargirls)
Power: 0
Hitpoints: 100 + 1000 (Wargirls)
Prerequisite: MCV
Purpose: Anti infantry, Anti air.
Armor Class: Defensive Structure
Weapon: 1x Graviton PD turrets
Range: 4
Additional Information: Self Repairing.
It's tiny—just a 3x3x4-meter box with a 1-meter gun barrel sticking out. I can spam these like crazy. It's basically my version of the Allies' pillbox, but better. It even has a mini nuclear fusion reactor. Sure, if destroyed, it'll cause a small explosion, but by that point, it'll be swarmed with enemy anyway, so having a self-destruct as a final "screw you" works in my favor.
"Then sensor towers—let's put about 20 spread throughout the city," I say. Each overlaps for no blind spots, ensuring cloaked units can't sneak through.
"Now for drone towers. I'm thinking 12?" I add. Helena nods, placing them in the city. "A total of 480 drones on standby—not counting what we T-Dolls can do." Her eyes shift to a glowing blue, her retina appearing more digital. It reminds me of someone from my past life... but I can't recall who.
"Aqua-chan~ your 10 minutes are up. I've surveyed the coast—no one's there anymore," Amy reports. I nod. Time to start laying foundations under the beach.
"As for heavy hitters—Avalon turrets go on the cliffs, and missile turrets scatter through the coastline along with lots of PD turrets" I continue. The PD turrets are small enough to mount on skyscrapers or other buildings without issue. Overlapping firing solutions already cover most of the map.
"Master~ how about bunkers for civilians?" Helena suggests.
"Good point," I reply, placing Standard Bunkers near emergency responders like fire stations, police stations, schools, and populated areas.
There's no subway in this city—this is Pearl Harbor during 1977, after all. Still, I plan to expand the islands later so I might make a armored subway line. Why does this feel like playing Cities: Skylines? I shake my head.
With the foundation done, it's time to start building the wall bunkers. I notice people gathering in the distance—men, women, and children, some holding groceries. I glance at Amy, who just shrugs.
"All yours, Aqua-chan," she says with a thumbs-up and an encouraging smile. Fine.
I slowly approach the civilians. Some, especially a woman holding her child, step back. Am I that intimidating? I'm just wearing a hoodie, shorts, and stockings—wait. I pull down my hoodie and smile. "Hello, citizens," I greet them warmly.
First impressions matter. "As you may have heard from Allied soldiers or neighbors, yes, control of the island has been transferred," I explain. An elderly man with a cane steps forward, parting the crowd.
"What will you do to us?" he asks, assume by his clothes some kind of war veteran who too old for military.
Someone important? Nothing come to mind "Nothing changes," I answer truthfully. "This is like a transfer of territories. You're free to leave, but I wouldn't expect anywhere safer than this island in the coming years with Russia ramming up War Industry production.""Although You'll have employment—some jobs will be replaced—but free healthcare is guaranteed. What I promise you, citizens, is stability for you and your families," I add. My nanoswarms notify me that the wall bunkers are finished. Perfect.
The wall rises out of the sand along the coast with a loud rumble, drawing attention. I smile.
"As you can see, the Abyssal is fortifying the area," I continue. The crowd stares in stunned silence.
"Why go to such lengths?" the old man asks.
"To prepare for what's coming," I reply firmly. "For those who lose jobs, we'll have positions available and offer different forms of payment. Meet us at the central park after the fog lifts." My smile stays bright, masking any doubts. If my memory serves, Hestia turned the abandoned Allied base into a large park.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have bunkers to set up," I say, spinning around and walking back to my post. I will the wall sections to retract into the ground.
Next up—PD turrets along the coast. As my nanoswarms get to work, I notice Amy and Helena smirking and pointing at something. I follow their gaze.
A UAV camera drone hovers silently. Too silent for a quadcopter. Did it record my speech?
I pout.
