Chapter 74: Volume 1: Chapter 76 - What's in Aoko's Heart, the Nuns Know Well
The heavy rain, which had been falling for two consecutive days, had finally ended. The air carried a sense of freshness, as if all things had been washed clean, and a faint, earthy smell emanated from the soil.
Following his usual routine, Aozaki Rin took the train to the Goda Church in Misaki City to prepare for his new lessons.
Although now, with the help of the glasses Aozaki Touko had made for him, he could have gone by himself, Aoko, holding onto a sliver of worry, still stubbornly insisted on escorting him to the church.
The Goda Church did not occupy a large area, but it was the only church in Misaki City.
Its location was perfectly situated between the commercial district and the residential street, and next to it was the city's largest general hospital.
The beautiful, all-white building with its triangular roof easily attracted people's attention. As Aozaki Aoko led Aozaki Rin by the hand to the church entrance, she happened to see a mature woman with curly purple hair falling softly to her chest, wearing a cool short-sleeved shirt. The woman, whose features were delicate and pleasing to the eye, was sweeping the fallen leaves on the road, humming an unknown little tune.
Seeming to hear the approaching footsteps, the woman immediately looked up and, upon seeing them, a slightly surprised expression appeared on her face.
"Isn't this Aoko? Are you bringing little Rin to his lesson again? But why is little Rin wearing glasses?"
Ritsuka Shizuki looked at the boy wearing glasses with a puzzled expression, wondering if his eyes had been cured. But she had just seen the boy at the church a few days ago, and even if it was a treatment, it shouldn't have been that fast...
But Aozaki Aoko seemed to have no interest in explaining. Instead, she glanced at the woman with a look of slight disdain and annoyance and asked back.
"Where is Sister Yuika? Is she inside the church?"
"I say, Aoko, why can't you just leave little Rin with me, and I'll take him to Yuika, then you can hurry off to school? Why do you have to ask specifically for Yuika? And why is your attitude toward Yuika completely different from your attitude toward me? Or do you hate me so much you don't even want to say my name?"
Seemingly hurt by the girl's distrust, Ritsuka Shizuki threw out a series of questions.
But Aozaki Aoko just let out a cold snort, glanced at her, and said.
"Shut up, you idiot Ritsuka! I still haven't forgiven you for trying to kidnap Rin back then!"
"But, that was just a joke... and how many years has it been..."
Scratching her face, Ritsuka's brow furrowed with some vexation.
After all, back then, she had been a spy for the Mage's Association, pretending to be a home tutor to come to the Aozaki household. Her purpose was to monitor the Aozaki family's research on True Magic and report back to the Association.
It was for this reason that she had originally decided to use the girl before her as a starting point to gather some information.
She just hadn't expected that midway through, because the then-young Aozaki Rin was too cute, she had joked about stealing the boy away in the middle of the night and running off with him. As a result, she was fiercely kicked in the shin by Aoko, who for some reason had become angry. She was even seen through by a passing Aozaki Touko, who dispelled her disguise, leading to the spectacular failure of her spy mission and her becoming a mere freeloader from the Mage's Association.
"You can't be sure about that. Who knows if you were serious at the time..."
Muttering under her breath, Aoko was about to say more, but Aozaki Rin, knowing that his sisters had a small conflict with Ritsuka, tugged on the girl's hand and looked up.
"It's okay to just bring me here, Sister. If you're any later, you'll be late for school. Besides, Miss Ritsuka is a very reliable person. You don't need to worry about things here."
"...Alright, I get it. But if that bad woman tries to get handsy with you, you have to tell Sister Yuika."
After a moment's hesitation, Aoko reluctantly nodded. She glanced at the clock hanging outside the church, earnestly instructed the boy one last time, and then, with some reluctance, took the boy's hand and handed him over to Ritsuka.
But at the end, she still warned her distrustfully.
"Don't you dare bully Rin!"
"...How many times has he come here? Why would I do that? If I really bullied little Rin, Yuika would be the first one not to let me off the hook."
Not understanding why the girl's trust in her was so thin, Ritsuka was at a loss for whether to laugh or cry.
Fortunately, Aoko did not continue to pester her. Realizing that she was indeed running late for school, after saying goodbye to Aozaki Rin, she hurriedly left the church.
"Remember to go home early after school and don't linger on the streets, Aoko. It seems a little unsafe recently. I heard a few people went missing a few days ago."
"You're so noisy! I know that without you telling me, you idiot Ritsuka!"
Watching the girl's departing figure, Ritsuka Shizuki let out a small, wry smile. Just then, the boy beside her suddenly tugged on her hand.
"I'm sorry, Miss Ritsuka. It seems my sister has some misunderstanding about you, but she means no harm. Please forgive her."
Aozaki Rin apologized seriously, but Ritsuka Shizuki didn't take it to heart and subconsciously waved her hand.
"Haha, it's fine. I'm used to Aoko talking to me like that anyway. Speaking of which, what's with the glasses, little Rin?"
"This is a Mystic Code that Sister Touko made for me. It lets me see a little."
"Is that so? As expected of Touko, she's really amazing..."
Marveling as she held the boy's hand and entered the church, Ritsuka Shizuki soon found her own sister, Yuika Shizuki, in the church's backyard and handed the boy over to her.
"Well then, my mission is complete. I'll leave little Rin in your care, Yuika."
Yuika Shizuki, wearing a black nun's habit and a black veil, nodded lightly. After she and Aozaki Rin had greeted each other, the two of them skillfully made their way to one of the church's libraries.
However, what puzzled Aozaki Rin a little was that today, he hadn't seen the true master of this church, the priest he was also quite familiar with—Eiri Fumizuka.
But thinking that he was probably out on business, Aozaki Rin did not presume to ask the nun this question and soon focused his attention on the Braille before him.
After all, his eyes could not see. Even with the help of glasses, he could only see the square outer contour of a book, but not the text or colors on it. Aozaki Rin's method of literacy was still the same as in the past, relying on the touch of his fingertips to increase his knowledge, and he had long since adapted to this way.
Time for study always flew by, and in the blink of an eye, a morning had passed.
But after the lesson on recognizing new characters and some common knowledge had ended, a hint of hesitation flashed across Yuika Shizuki's usually serious pretty face. A moment later, she suddenly spoke.
"...By the way, Rin. Does Aoko still bathe with you these days?"
"Huh? Didn't you say that boys and girls our age aren't supposed to do that anymore, Sister Yuika? The day before yesterday, Sister did want to take care of me and come into the bathroom with me, but after I said that, she didn't. Is there a problem?"
Not quite understanding why his teacher would ask this, Aozaki Rin blinked in confusion.
"No, that's good. You just need to remember not to do that before you become an adult."
A faint smile appeared on her face as Yuika added this, sighing with relief in her heart.
After all, others couldn't see it, but as someone who understood both Aoko and the boy well enough, she knew very well that the relationship between the girl and the boy was sometimes a little too close.
Admittedly, the Aozaki family didn't mind this situation, and it was even highly likely that the girl's parents had some kind of plan in mind. But to ensure the boy's physical and mental health, as a nun, she would rather the boy's innocence not be unconsciously led astray by Aoko so early on.
Unable to know the thoughts currently fluctuating in the nun's heart, Aozaki Rin just nodded, not quite understanding, and, as usual, committed her teachings to memory.
"Mhm, I understand, Sister Yuika."
