Chapter 111: Chapter 108: I am not the devil

"Why are you the only one here? As the second princess, there should be many guards accompanying you."

Jason was too direct to bother with small talk and asked Melty straight away.

"As for the guards, I actually got separated from them."

Melty looked directly at Jason, as if she wasn't lying.

"How much time has it been?"

"It's been about an hour."

"As a guard, to just leave their master in this kind of barren mountains, where dangerous monsters are everywhere, and not search for them? Do you expect me to believe what you're saying?"

"I don't even care to lie. I really did get separated from my guards. I saw a few Filo birds on the way and played with them for a bit. I happened to see you passing by. As for why the guards didn't look for me, maybe they just couldn't find me."

Faced with Jason's questioning, Melty puffed her cheeks slightly, looking angry at Jason's disbelief.

"There's no way that's possible. Although you're small, you're still a person. There's no reason to just disappear without anyone noticing. Besides, I didn't see any guards on the way here."

Jason rested his chin in his hand, as if asking or thinking.

"Where am I small?"

Melty was upset on the spot because of her petite size. As a human, she was often sensitive about it.

"Everywhere is small."

Jason glanced up and down at Melty.

After that, he ignored her angry expression, lost in thought: It seems that Melty didn't lie, but the guards are too suspicious. Could it be that they have other intentions? Are they the king's people, or perhaps they work for the queen? It feels more likely to be the queen, but what is her purpose? She hasn't even shown herself yet.

After all, Jason isn't some famous detective whose body is a child but whose wisdom is that of an adult, so he couldn't figure it out immediately.

At that moment, Jason noticed a strange gaze and quickly turned his head, looking into the depths of the nearby forest.

But the strange gaze disappeared in an instant.

An illusion?

Jason didn't think so. He thought of some individuals—the secret spy force under the Queen's direct command, [Shadow].

If there was any doubt before, now Jason was 90% sure that the guards around Melty were the queen's people, and that the queen had deliberately arranged for Melty to get close to him.

With that, everything made sense. Anyway, with [Shadow] protecting her secretly, there was no need to worry about Melty encountering any danger.

It's just that Jason still couldn't figure out the queen's true purpose.

"That... Shield Hero, may I travel with you for a while?"

At this moment, Melty timidly asked.

"What? You're not afraid of me?"

Jason snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Melty with amusement.

"I am... but I don't have much food left, and you just said there are dangerous monsters everywhere, and..."

Melty glanced at Filo, who wasn't far away. Clearly, she realized traveling alone wasn't an option, and her love for Filo helped her overcome her fear of Jason.

"You're heading back to the capital, right? I'm also trying to return there. As the Shield Hero, you wouldn't do anything harmful to me, would you?"

Melty thought for a moment before continuing.

"Of course, as long as you don't provoke me, I won't harm you. I'm not a devil, after all."

Jason said this with a smile, and Jack and the others beside him turned their heads, pretending not to hear anything.

"So you agree?"

Melty was immediately overjoyed, not noticing Jack and the others' expressions.

"Yes."

Jason nodded, also wanting to use this opportunity to find out the queen's true intentions, so he agreed.

"Then can I play with Filo?"

Melty's eyes sparkled with excitement as she looked at Filo.

"Fine, but don't teach Filo any bad habits, or I'll kill you, even if you're the future queen."

Jason viewed himself more like family to Filo. If Filo had a friend her own age, it seemed like a good thing—perhaps it would promote her normal mental growth. After all, people like him weren't normal themselves, so Jason agreed.

Of course, Jason had his own principles. If Melty were to lead Filo astray, he would intervene without hesitation. He wasn't indecisive like Iwatani Naofumi.

"Thank you!"

Hearing Jason's agreement, Melty quickly stood up and bowed to him before happily running towards Filo. However, the pain from her fall earlier made her movements somewhat clumsy.

Everything seemed harmonious, though Raphtalia only shook her head: Another good girl, lost to fate.

"Everyone, get ready to camp!"

At this time, Jason glanced at the sky. It was clear they couldn't reach the next village before dark, so he found a suitable spot for them to set up camp.

Hearing Jason's command, Jack and the others quickly located an open area, took tents from the carriage, and set them up while also starting a fire.

By the time everything was ready, the sky was completely dark.

Tonight's dinner was Raphtalia and Lilith's responsibility. While they were busy preparing the meal, Jack and the others weren't idle. They immediately began their training.

Melty and Filo sat beside each other, chatting and watching as the others worked up a sweat.

At that moment, Melty finally realized Jason wasn't abusing Jack and the others. Their injuries were a result of their rigorous self-training.

She couldn't help but be astonished. The intensity of their training was far beyond anything she had ever imagined.

Even when Jack and the others got injured, they didn't stop. They just wiped off the blood and continued without complaint.

Melty was certain that even the best soldiers in the kingdom might not survive this kind of training. Yet, Jack and the others, who didn't seem much older than her, were handling it with incredible resilience.

More importantly, each of them was remarkably strong. Their speed and power were far superior to that of ordinary soldiers or adventurers, exceeding them by several levels.

"Why... Why do they have to train like this? What kind of magical power does the Shield Hero possess to gather such strong and determined people?" Melty muttered in confusion.

"They're just ordinary villagers."

Jason had come up beside her and, hearing her words, casually responded.

"Villagers? Impossible! I can tell just by looking at them—they're definitely not villagers. No villager could be this absurdly strong."

Melty's eyes widened in disbelief, shaking her head vigorously.
