Chapter 2: CHAPTER 1: A BROKEN HEART AND A SECOND CHANCE
The world seemed to blur as Lily Rivera stood on the edge of the rooftop, her hands trembling against the cold wind. Memories of her life played like a cruel movie reel, all centering around one person: Noah Callahan. Her childhood best friend, her first love, and the man she gave everything to—only to be left with nothing but a broken heart.
Lily and Noah's story began in the small town of Cedar Falls. They grew up as neighbors, their houses separated by a single white picket fence. From the moment they met, they were inseparable. Lily was shy and bookish, with big dreams of becoming an artist, while Noah was outgoing, adventurous, and always ready with a mischievous grin.
They spent their childhood exploring the woods behind their houses, building castles in the sand by thebeach, and dreaming about the future. Lily's parents often joked that Noah was like a second son, while Noah's parents adored Lily for her sweet demeanor and quiet intelligence.
One summer afternoon, as they lay on the grass staring up at the clouds, Noah turned to Lily and said, "When we grow up, I'm going to build us a house with a big treehouse in the backyard."
Lily giggled. "What if we don't live near trees?"
"We'll plant one," he replied with a grin. "You'll paint it, and I'll build it. Deal?"
"Deal," she said, not knowing how deeply those words would embed themselves in her heart.
By the time they reached high school, things began to change. Noah's easy charm and athletic prowess made him popular, while Lily faded into the background. She joined the art club, her sketchbook her constant companion, but her feelings for Noah deepened.
It was during junior year when Noah met Emma Carter, the school's golden girl. Emma was everything Lily wasn't: confident, outgoing, and effortlessly stunning. She was the captain of the cheerleading squad, and it didn't take long for Noah to fall for her.
Lily watched from the sidelines as Noah and Emma grew closer. The pain was sharp but silent, hidden behind her supportive smile. One evening, she decided to confess her feelings. They were sitting on the bleachers after one of Noah's football games. The field lights cast a warm glow, and her heart raced.
"Noah," she began, her voice trembling, "I need to tell you something."
He looked at her with those familiar, kind eyes. "What is it, Lil?"
She took a deep breath. "I think I… I love you. I have for a long time."
Noah's expression softened, and he reached for her hand. "Lily, you're my best friend. I care about you more than anything, but not in that way. I… I'm in love with Emma."
Her heart shattered, but she forced a smile. "I understand," she whispered. "I just needed to tell you."
"I don't want this to change anything between us," he said earnestly.
"It won't," she lied.
Despite the rejection, Lily stayed by Noah's side, even as he and Emma became an official couple. They attended the same university, though their paths diverged. Noah pursued business, driven by his dream of starting his own company, while Lily studied fine arts, honing her talent.
Their friendship became strained. Lily poured her heartache into her art, creating paintings that spoke of unrequited love and longing. Meanwhile, Noah's life with Emma seemed perfect.
One evening during their sophomore year, Noah invited Lily to a café near campus. His eyes were alight with excitement.
"Emma and I are moving in together," he announced.
Lily forced a smile. "That's great, Noah. I'm happy for you."
"Thanks, Lil. You've always been my biggest supporter. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Her heart clenched. "You'd be fine. You have Emma now."
He frowned. "Hey, you'll always be important to me. Don't ever think otherwise."
But she did think otherwise. More and more, she felt like an afterthought in his life.
After graduation, Noah and Emma got engaged. By then, Lily had a modest job as a graphic designer, while Noah's startup began to flourish. When he invited her to the engagement party, she almost didn't go. But she couldn't stay away.
That night, Emma cornered her in the hallway. Her voice was sharp as she said, "You need to stop clinging to Noah. It's pathetic."
Lily's breath hitched. "I'm not clinging. We're friends."
"Friends? He's my fiancé. You've been a shadow in his life for too long. Let him go."
Tears welled in Lily's eyes. "I… I just want him to be happy."
"Then leave us alone," Emma said coldly.
Noah appeared behind Emma, his expression unreadable. He didn't defend Lily. He didn't stop Emma. He simply looked away.
Lily's heart broke completely that night.
On the day of Noah and Emma's wedding, Lily stood among the guests, watching as Noah slipped a ring onto Emma's finger. Her vision blurred with tears. She excused herself and climbed to the rooftop of her apartment building.
As she stared down at the bustling city below, she whispered, "I gave you everything, Noah. I gave up my dreams, my heart, and my happiness for you. I wish I had never loved you."
With that, she stepped forward, her final wish burning in her heart.
But instead of falling, Lily woke up gasping for air. She was in her childhood bedroom, surrounded by familiar posters and the soft hum of the old ceiling fan. Her hands clutched her blanket as her heart raced.
She glanced at the mirror and froze. She was sixteen again.
"What… what is this?" she whispered, touching her face, her eyes wide with disbelief. Memories of her final moments on the rooftop flooded her mind.
Then, a voice echoed softly in her heart: Your wish has been granted. Unlove him, and find yourself.
Tears streamed down Lily's cheeks, but they weren't tears of sorrow. For the first time in years, she felt a spark of hope.
"This time," she murmured, clenching her fists, "I'll focus on me. No more Noah. No more heartbreak. I'll live for myself."
Her second chance had begun.
