Chapter 12: Air for the mind
They stared at the apparition.
What were they talking about? Now that they thought about it, this was the first time they had heard anyone talk other than themselves.
"Hi..." They said awkwardly, never having had talked to a human before.
"I will tell you what your appointment as dungeon keeper means, then I will return to my corpse." The naked man said, seemingly dismissing his greeting.
"As dungeon keeper, you can manipulate the innate mana of the dungeon." The corpse said.
"Can you hear me?" They said, trying to elicit a response.
"I leave you, my devout follower, to carry out my will." The corpse said.
It was now clear to them that this was some kind of pre-created response to the ritual being completed. It was in no way a being capable of responding.
"I will take my leave. Farewell, new keeper of the dungeon. " The naked figure then, in about half of a second, seemingly sprinted over to their corpse laying on the ground, then laying down, perfectly overlapping over it.
"What a strange man. Anyhow, it seemed that I wasn't the intended target of the message. Something happened in this dungeon that ended their lives early, I have no idea what his will is." They thought.
They now turned their attention to their new powers. They still didn't exactly understand what being a dungeon keeper meant.
"Maybe it means that I can manipulate the dungeons energy, like how I manipulate my own." They thought.
They concentrated, this time, not on their body, but on the dungeon.
They now felt it, there was a mana cyclone circling around the dungeon.
Now being a beginner magic user, they understood how to do a full body inspell. They attempted to apply this principal to the dungeon.
They attempted to stop the mana cyclone of the dungeon, but produced no massive results. It seemed that there was too much mana for them to deal with for the moment.
Despite this, they could partially stop it. Their goal now was to get out of the dungeon.
Being able to manipulate the mana of the dungeon hopefully meant that they could create a door to get out of the dungeon.
They attempted to control the mana cyclone again, but this time they focused on one wall. Surprisingly, the mana cyclone seemed to only be present on the target wall.
It now seemed that their ability was not to control the mana of the dungeon, but to be able to impose a mana cyclone on individual parts of the dungeon.
This was definitely an ability that had potential, but they had not yet figured out the best application of this power. They realized that they would likely need to grow their power a lot more before this ability would be majorly useful.
For the time being, they wanted to make an exit to the dungeon.
Feeling the mana cyclone in front of them, they decided to try to use expell to push the stone wall into a door.
They concentrated once more, concentrated on a very small portion of the wall, a space at the bottom just big enough so they could crawl through it.
They felt the mana, and then put in into a total inspell. Now would be the difficult part, the expell.
They decided that they would try to use the expell to propel the stones out of the wall.
With more mana accesible in the dungeon than their own body, it would likely be easier than the expell they could do with the rough rock.
"Expell"
They tried verbalizing the command this time, to try to bring more concentration into it.
Crash
The rocks pushed out of the wall, now leaving a hole in the wall that brought cold air into it.
They looked through a hole, sticking their head through, and breathing their first breath of freedom.
They now had an exit from the dungeon.
Overjoyed, they stated to crawl entirely out of the dungeon.
They surveyed the dungeon from the outside. It was an above ground stone structure. The stone walls looked very thick from the outside, explaining how they weren't hearing much noise from the outside world.
It was very clearly a dungeon, having engravings fully surrounding the dungeon. Having done enough engraving interpretation for now, they intentionally blocked it out of their mind.
They now turned their attention to the air. It was a cool day, in their estimate it was only a couple weeks until winter would come.
Looking at the sky, it was mid afternoon.
"I'll wait out this night. I won't fall asleep, if I do I don't know when I'll wake up."
They decided to survey the immediate surroundings before heading back into the dungeon at night. They didn't know what kind of animals would come out at night, and they didn't feel like risking it.
The area they were in was a small clearing. It appeared to have been intentionally cleared out to make room for the dungeon.
The grass was a deep dark green, not bringing much joy to their surroundings. The clearing was in what looked to be a dense forest.
The forest consisted of many, skinny trees. The bark of the trees was dark grey, and most of their leaves had already fallen on the ground.
The land was flat, save for a mountain range deep in the distance. The forest contained many large boulders, and the ground was littered on the ground. Their feet preemptively hurt.
They simply took a couple hours to breathe in the air. The didn't venture far from the dungeon, lest they not find their way back. There was nothing of note in the immediate surroundings, there were no roads, nor other buildings in the area.
They could hear the faint sounds of animals. The songs of birds, and general footsteps. The only animal they directly interacted with, was a rabbit, which once they came near enough to it, it took off at a breakneck pace.
As it was getting dark, they decided to head back into the dungeon. During the night, they would prepare their gear for their journey.
