Another day had passed, and Sato woke up even earlier than the day before.
Just after 5 a.m., with the sky only faintly lit, he was already on the deck. At the stern of the ship, he was chatting with a sailor who reeked of fish.
"Mr. Sato, here are the small fish you asked for. Look, they're fresh out of the sea and still wriggling."
The sailor dragged over a large bucket covered with a layer of fishing net and spoke casually to Sato.
To emphasize his point, he grabbed a lively little fish from the bucket and held it up in front of him.
"Thank you, Mr. Max. I appreciate your effort. Here's a little token of gratitude, please accept it."
Feigning delight, Sato glanced at the crude sailor named Max, then pulled out three 1,000 PokeDollar bills with a smile.
Sato discreetly handed over the money, and Max, being a seasoned hand, smoothly completed the transaction with a handshake.
In truth, the bucket of small fish was worth only a few hundred PokeDollars at most.
However, since Sato was on someone else's territory and had a favor to ask, he had no choice but to accept the price set by the sailor.
Of course, the extra money wasn't spent in vain. Sato's habit of feeding wild Pokémon like Wingull with small fish on the ship was technically against the rules.
If a wild Pokémon attacked a passenger, the sailors would bear the responsibility.
Thus, they only allowed Sato to carry out his seemingly foolish "charity project" early in the morning when no one else was around.
"Mr. Sato, do you like Wingull?"
Max's curiosity got the better of him after pocketing the money.
"Yes, Mr. Max. I'm searching for a Wingull with potential, hoping it might become my partner," Sato replied with a smile, honestly revealing his intentions.
"Oh, I see. Well, good luck to you, Mr. Sato. By the way, while my crew and I were fishing earlier, I thought I saw a Wingull with an unusual color. But maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me—I'm not entirely sure."
Max's eyes lit up as he spoke, recalling the earlier sighting.
"Really? Could you tell me where on the St. Louis you saw it, Mr. Max?"
Sato's interest was immediately piqued, and he pulled out two more 1,000 PokeDollar bills, placing them in Max's hand with a grin.
"Hahaha, Mr. Sato, what are you doing? You're making me feel so embarrassed," Max laughed, though there was no hint of embarrassment as he pocketed the money.
"I saw it while fishing on the left-side deck. But it could have just been my imagination, and with the ship moving forward, it's possible it's long gone by now."
After finishing his explanation, Max quickly left. Once he turned away, his stubbled face twisted into an expression of disdain, and he muttered under his breath, "Easy money from naive fools."
With Max gone, Sato was left alone on the stern deck. At this point, he released Golbat to stand guard, then began his "charity project."
"A Wingull with an unusual color... I can't wait to see it."
Sato glanced ahead, his eyes filled with anticipation as he watched several Wingull, drawn by the strong scent of fish, gradually fly closer.
Sato was quite knowledgeable about Shiny Pokémon. Due to their unique coloration, these Pokémon were often ostracized by their own kind.
Typically solitary, they lived harsh lives without the protection of a group.
Of course, any Shiny Pokémon that managed to survive were clever by nature. The idea of following a ship to easily secure food wouldn't be lost on such a Pokémon.
If what Max said was true, then that Shiny Wingull might still be trailing the St. Louis.
Sato began his "charity project," and more and more Wingull were drawn by the smell.
Perhaps his actions the previous day had spread his reputation among the flock, as these Wingull showed no fear, landing around him to wait patiently for food.
Sato smiled faintly at the sight but said nothing. Wearing plastic gloves, he quickly scooped fish from the bucket and tossed them towards the sea.
The Wingull perched beside him, seeing this, reluctantly joined the scramble for food with their companions.
Before long, the large bucket of fish was emptied. During the entire feeding session, Sato hadn't spotted any Wingull that caught his eye, nor did he see even a trace of the Shiny Wingull Max had mentioned.
With no fish left, the Wingull gathered at the stern began to disperse. In moments, the lively scene quieted, leaving Sato alone on the deck once again.
However, just as he turned to leave with the empty bucket, a flicker of movement crossed his vision. A small figure suddenly flew past him, landing on the deck at the stern.
Looking ahead, Sato saw a Wingull whose wing feathers were slightly different in color from the others.
The Wingull was happily pecking at scraps of fish left behind by its companions.
In the next instant, a faint blue glint flashed in Sato's eyes as the data of the Wingull appeared before him:
Pokémon: Wingull (Shiny)
Level: 18
Type: Water/Flying
Abilities: Hydration, Rain Dish
Gender: Female
Known Moves: Growl, Water Gun, Supersonic, Wing Attack, Mist, Water Pulse, Aqua Ring (Egg Move), Waterfall (Tutor)
"It seems these two days of charity work have boosted my luck! I've actually found one. Golbat, use Mean Look on her so she can't escape!"
Seeing the information about the Shiny Wingull, Sato's face lit up with delight. He immediately commanded Golbat to trap the Wingull.
Golbat's sharp eyes glowed with a dark light, and in an instant, the Shiny Wingull froze as her feathers stood on end. A black mark appeared on her body.
The Shiny Wingull, sensing danger, immediately identified Sato and Golbat as enemies. But instead of preparing for battle, her first instinct was to flee.
However, an invisible force restrained her, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't fly more than 10 meters away from Golbat.
