Chapter 2: Chapter 2: The Sustenance of Fear
Edward was a horror movie enthusiast. From watching classics like The Ring and Ringu with his family as a child, to later devouring Ju-On, One Missed Call, Dead Silence, and The Conjuring, he was deeply captivated by the genre.
Every time he watched a horror movie, his heart surged with excitement.
The feeling of being immersed in endless fear and then emerging with a sense of exhilaration was unmatched by any other type of film.
But in the world of Pokémon, there were no standout horror films.
This led Edward to an idea: if they didn't exist, why shouldn't he be the one to pioneer them? He would be the one to bring fear to this world.
"Brilliant!" Devon was genuinely impressed. "This story is bound to become a hit—it's a bold stroke in the otherwise dull film industry."
As the leader of Devon Corporation, the top enterprise in the Hoenn region, Devon had an exceptional eye for potential. He believed this horror film, titled Dead Silence, was destined to become a masterpiece.
"So..." Edward rubbed his hands together. Did this mean his proposal was approved?
"I'll give you a card. The PIN is your birthday, and you can use the funds as you see fit," Devon said with a warm smile as he handed Edward a card. He had long since set aside funds for his youngest son, ready to support him whether he chose to be a trainer or start his own business.
And now, it seemed his youngest son's first venture was nothing short of extraordinary.
"Thank you, Dad!" Edward beamed as he accepted the card. Back in his previous life, getting approval for a project required internal discussions, meetings, and often facing pushback from higher-ups. He hadn't expected it to be so simple this time.
"Need me to help set up the company?" Devon was in high spirits. With both his sons finding their paths in life, he could finally relax.
After some thought, Edward agreed. Though he had watched countless horror movies in his previous life, he knew little about directing or running a business.
Leaving professional tasks to professionals was a core tenet of Edward's philosophy.
Devon nodded in approval. His youngest son was sensible. But as he recalled Edward's pitch, he couldn't help but think of Kalos Champion Diantha, a renowned actress and champion in her region.
Could his son follow a similar path?
"What name will you give the company?" Devon asked with a smile. He planned to assist only in its establishment and necessary oversight, leaving the rest to Edward's creativity.
For a corporation as wealthy as Devon, this was no issue at all.
"Let's call it Phantom Film Company," Edward said, revealing his vision. He intended to focus solely on horror films, perhaps branching into suspense in the future. But horror would remain the core, and a simple name like "Phantom" would increase brand recognition.
"Sounds good." Devon had no objections.
The family's butler quickly stepped forward, taking Edward's pitch and heading off to handle the establishment of the company.
A qualified butler never needed explicit instructions.
"Edward, was the inspiration for this film your Mimikyu?" Devon asked, thinking about the eerie Pikachu doll in Edward's story.
The haunted Pikachu doll, passed to a child, the unsettling tale of its maker, Mary Shaw—all of it reminded Devon of the special Pokémon Edward had requested at age ten: a Mimikyu.
A Ghost-type from the Alola region, Mimikyu always wore a tattered Pikachu disguise, exuding a timid aura.
To gift his son this Pokémon, Devon had paid handsomely to obtain the offspring of a Totem Mimikyu.
"Yes," Edward admitted without hesitation. His only Pokémon was indeed a Mimikyu, which he had trained well. However, he rarely battled with it.
After countless lifetimes as a Champion, he wanted a new way of life.
Becoming a director and introducing horror films to this world was the path he had chosen.
"I'm looking forward to your film, Edward." Devon laughed heartily, eager to see the kind of movie his son would create.
With his father's approval, Edward felt even more motivated. With sufficient funding, his next step was to transform the horror story in his mind into a movie, shocking the Pokémon world.
[Initial Quest: The Sustenance of Fear]
[Through your horror films, accumulate Fear Points. Rewards will be granted based on the Fear Points collected.]
[Minimum Reward: 10,000 Fear Points – Fear Sustenance Creator]
[Fear Sustenance Creator: Converts Fear Points into a special feed consumable only by Ghost-type Pokémon, boosting their Awakening Value.]
"?" Edward tapped a question mark in confusion. What was this? A cheat system?
Glancing at his father, who was enjoying breakfast and oblivious to him, Edward looked again at the floating text box in front of him. This was definitely his cheat system.
Its activation today was unexpected, but intriguing. What was this Awakening Value?
He recalled a Pokémon game from his past life, Let's Go Pikachu, where catching the same species repeatedly granted candies that could enhance Pokémon stats significantly. The concept seemed similar to Awakening Value, a feature so overpowered it wasn't carried over to later games.
If this Awakening Value worked as he imagined, it would indeed be overpowered—boosting all stats without being constrained by nature or base stats, potentially adding 200 to each stat when maxed out.
"Is this pushing me toward becoming a Ghost-type Elite Four member?" Edward thought with a wry smile. This cheat system seemed perfectly aligned with his goal of becoming a director and writer.
With breakfast finished, Edward decided to visit his company and begin planning the production of his first movie, Dead Silence.
