Chapter 109: Chapter 109
Two days later, on an unnamed island in the Orange Archipelago.
Charmander had just defeated a Butterfree.
It was a Butterfree that seemed to be Elite-level.
> Ding—
Charmander's battle experience increased.
Host's Pokémon Charmander defeated Butterfree.
Butterfree is a Lv. 32 Elite-level Bug/Flying-type Pokémon.
Charmander's evolution stage is lower than Butterfree's.
Reward: 5600 points
Charmander leveled up.
Charmander learned the move: Flamethrower.
---
Awesome! It really was an Elite-level Butterfree!
Hearing the system notification, Leaf felt a surge of joy in his heart. Charmander hadn't even evolved once, yet it could already defeat a second-stage evolved Butterfree. If it trained more in the future, how powerful could it become?
However...
If things continued like this, Charmander might truly be unable to evolve.
At the beginning, Leaf had indeed hoped Charmander would suppress its evolution—doing so meant gaining more points and experience. But then he remembered what happened with Lapras. When Lapras reached Lv. 50, or Elite Four-level, farming wild Pokémon no longer yielded much experience or points.
Leaf felt it would be best to let Charmander evolve smoothly before reaching Elite Four-level. In other words, this point-farming "bug" was only useful for the time being.
Even so, compared to other Elite-level Pokémon that had already reached their second evolutionary stage, Charmander was lagging behind. Despite farming so much battle experience and leveling up several times, Charmander still hadn't evolved. Charmander itself even said it didn't feel any signs of evolution.
Perhaps, in the future, evolution would become a luxury for Charmander.
---
At noon, Leaf returned to the island to cook. Just as he was about to rest, Serena called.
> "Leaf, are you free today? Want to go to Cinnabar Island and take a look?"
> "Didn't they say the Indigo League sealed it off? Have they lifted the blockade?"
> "Not really, but we got a pass that allows us to enter and exit freely, using our Orange Archipelago trainer identities."
> "Is the Indigo League always this overbearing?" Leaf frowned. "It's already been four days. I didn't care when they sealed off the Cinnabar Island area, but why are they sealing the Orange Archipelago's border too? Isn't that treating our Orange League like it doesn't even exist?"
> "It's already much better than before," Serena replied helplessly. "I used to be annoyed by it too, so I asked Grandma Ivy. But she just smiled and said at least now the Indigo League notifies us and requests permission when they seal the border. Before, when you weren't here, they wouldn't even bother telling us—let alone ask."
> "That arrogant?" Leaf was stunned. "We're both leagues. Sure, the Orange Archipelago is smaller and weaker, but do they have to look down on us like that?"
> "There's nothing we can do," Serena sighed. "The Indigo League is a large international league. In their eyes, we're just a backward little village. But they never expected a genius trainer like you would emerge from this 'village.' After hearing you defeated Bruno, a lot of people in the Indigo League probably had their jaws drop."
---
After chatting for a while, Leaf and Serena quickly settled on a time.
---
The next day.
After breakfast, Leaf set out.
Watching their master ride away on Lapras's shell, the Mythical Pokémon could only shake their heads helplessly.
They were reluctant to part with Leaf—but they missed his cooking even more. After just a few days of enjoying his food, Leaf was already heading off to train again. The days ahead would be tough once more.
---
After picking up Serena and Dawn from Citrus Island, the three of them sat steadily on Lapras's shell and quickly arrived at the border between the Orange Archipelago and the Kanto region.
There were indeed several Pokémon trainers standing guard. Judging from their energy and demeanor, they were Elite-level trainers—but their expressions carried a hint of arrogance.
> "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"Don't you know this area has been sealed off by the Indigo League?"
A tall young man, riding a Gyarados, led the group. He rushed toward Leaf and scanned Lapras, frowning slightly.
> "Pokémon trainer?"
> "That's right. We're Pokémon trainers from the Orange League," Leaf nodded, while Serena beside him had already taken out the pass and waved it in front of the man.
> "This is our pass. We can proceed, right?"
> "Of course." The young man didn't give them any trouble and allowed them through.
However, after Leaf and his companions had gone, the Indigo League trainers immediately gathered together.
---
> "Tsk tsk tsk, I didn't expect the Orange League to have such beautiful female trainers."
> "It must be rare for a poor place like that to produce two beauties."
> "That kid is lucky. I'm honestly a bit envious!"
> "Envious of what?" the tall trainer snapped. "For us Pokémon trainers, strength is everything. Once you reach Elite Four-level, what kind of woman can't you have? Forget normal women—even female trainers will line up at your door!"
> "The captain's right!" the others chimed in.
"That Lapras seemed decent, but probably only Elite-level at best. That kid's probably just an Elite-level trainer like us."
> "I heard the strongest trainer in the Orange League—some Chief Trainer—only has one Elite Four-level Pokémon."
> "That's old news! Didn't you hear? Our league's old Elite Four, Bruno, got defeated by a young trainer from the Orange League."
> "Those are just rumors. I don't buy something that bizarre."
"They said the one who beat Bruno was really young and had a Lapras too…"
> "No way! That guy just now didn't look like him at all! If I fought him, I'd crush him in minutes!"
---
As the team boasted among themselves, only the tall trainer remained silent, gazing into the distance in the direction Leaf had gone.
There was something unsettling about that young trainer's calmness.
Facing five sudden Elite-level trainers—especially with two beautiful girls by his side—should've made him nervous. Shouldn't he have been wary that they might have intentions?
To stay that composed…
Either that young trainer was inexperienced and naïve—or he didn't view this squad of Elite-level trainers as a threat at all.
If he really was the one who defeated Bruno…
Cold sweat broke out on the tall trainer's forehead at the thought.
