Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Powerful Gyarados
The Water Gym's battlefield consisted of a pond with several flat stones scattered across it, serving as footholds for Pokemon during battles.
At this moment, Sia had recalled his Pokemon, a light purple Starmie. As the evolved form of Staryu, Starmie's strength was far beyond what novice Trainers could typically handle. This very Starmie had effortlessly defeated numerous challengers throughout the day.
"I challenge you!"
Just as Sia was about to leave after recalling his Starmie, Kalia suddenly spoke up. Her reason for challenging him now was clear - she wanted to swiftly obtain her badge and move on to other cities, facing stronger Trainers along the way.
Moreover, Sia being a student from the Pokemon Academy implied exceptional skill. Although he possessed a formidable Starmie, her own Pokemon were no slouches either. With a week's worth of intensive training behind them, both her Pokemon had significantly improved, making victory within reach.
Sia glanced at Kalia and calmly replied, "Sorry, I need to take a nap. First, earn two badges, then consider challenging me."
"I already have two badges."
Kalia extended her left arm, revealing the two badges: a Rock Badge and a Flight Badge.
"Oh?" Sia paused and carefully examined the badges on Kalia's arm, feeling somewhat surprised.
Typically, challengers of the Water Gym would be new Trainers without any badges. Having already obtained the Flight Badge, it was unexpected that she hadn't earned the Surf Badge earlier.
"Well, since you have two badges, there's no issue." Sia had no reason to decline the challenge. The possession of the Flight Badge indicated that Kalia possessed notable strength, far surpassing most novice Trainers.
After waking up, Lian had been listening attentively from inside his Poké Ball. Realizing that Kalia was about to challenge the temporary Gym Leader, he emerged voluntarily.
Although unlikely to be chosen first against a Water Gym, he couldn't bear staying idle in the Poké Ball; it was simply too boring. He definitely wanted to watch the battle unfold.
"Charmeleon, your assistance isn't needed for now," Kalia remarked upon seeing Charmeleon exit the Poké Ball spontaneously.
Lian promptly found a spot closer to the action, ensuring he could observe clearly.
Seeing Charmeleon's intention to observe rather than battle immediately, Kalia felt relieved and proceeded towards the edge of the battlefield.
The arena consisted of a standard-sized water pond with only a few stepping stones, significantly testing the agility and evasion skills of the Pokémon. A single misstep could result in falling into the water.
"Send out your Pokémon." Sia spoke first.
Kalia sensed a foreboding as Sia allowed her to make the first move. However, against Water-type Pokémon, she had no choice but to deploy Grovyle, knowing it would be impractical to start with Charmeleon right away.
"Go, Grovyle!" Kalia tossed a Poké Ball, and Grovyle emerged, landing on one of the stones within the water pond.
"Grovyle, huh? Interesting." Sia displayed a confident smile upon seeing Kalia's Pokémon. He then retrieved another Poké Ball, not the one containing Starmie.
Kalia clearly noticed that Sia changed his chosen Pokémon based on hers, which left her somewhat displeased. As a Gym Leader, resorting to such tactics for gaining an advantage solely to win seemed inappropriate.
Kalia couldn't fault Sia's actions; sometimes she too would adjust her Pokémon based on her opponent's choice, albeit not excessively.
This is a common behavior among Trainers, clearly indicating that Sia still had the mindset of a regular Trainer rather than a Gym Leader.
"Go, Gyarados!" Sia tossed the Poké Ball, and a blue Gyarados descended onto the battlefield. Its massive body submerged in the water, emitting intimidating roars, instilling fear in its opponents.
"Calm down, Gyarados!" Sia shouted.
Gyarados ceased its roaring but maintained a menacing appearance, causing Grovyle to show signs of apprehension as the Intimidate Ability took effect.
Seeing this Gyarados, Kalia's expression changed. Against most Water-type Pokémon, Grovyle wouldn't be overly concerned, and even against Starmie, it could rely on Giga Drain for a prolonged battle.
However, Kalia didn't anticipate Sia having a Gyarados. Facing a Flying and Water-type Gyarados, Grovyle's Grass-type advantage vanished completely. Moreover, Gyarados possesses immense power and can learn a wide range of attack moves, many of which effectively counter Grovyle.
In this battle, Kalia not only lacked any advantage but was even at a disadvantage. If Grovyle were defeated, it would be extremely challenging for Charmeleon to consecutively overcome two Water-type Pokémon.
Lian noticed Sia's deliberate choice of Gyarados specifically to counter Grovyle.
Currently, both Grovyle and Lian were at Level 20, but their ability values differed significantly. Grovyle's Special Attack Ability Points had just reached four hundred, while its highest attribute, Speed Ability Points, surpassed six hundred.
However, Grovyle's Defense Ability Points were only slightly above two hundred, making it quite vulnerable. A single hit from Gyarados' attack moves could result in severe damage or potentially render it unable to continue battling.
It became clear to Lian that Sia had no intention of letting Kalia earn the Gym Badge; he aimed to defeat all new Trainers outright. As his first day as a temporary Gym Leader, losing to a newcomer would be utterly unacceptable to him.
Lian wasn't optimistic about Grovyle's chances, despite its superior speed compared to Gyarados. However, the confined battlefield itself limited the full potential of Grovyle's agility.
Gyarados excels at swift movement in water, while Grovyle is more adept on land and within forests, making environment crucial.
Without its speed advantage, Grovyle lacks significant offensive capabilities. Among its Grass-type moves, only Giga Drain remains viable, but without any type effectiveness, its impact is limited.
The battle swiftly commenced.
"Grovyle, use Giga Drain," Kalia commanded first. Currently, Grovyle's move repertoire was quite limited, being solely a single Grass-type. The 75-power Giga Drain was learned from a Move Disk by Grovyle itself.
Sia chuckled softly, already seeing Kalia's defeat in his mind. Grovyle stood no chance against his Gyarados, which had mastered the Ice-type move, Ice Fang.
"Gyarados, close in on Grovyle and use Ice Fang." Sia aimed to leave no opportunity for Grovyle to turn the tide, immediately instructing Gyarados to employ Ice Fang.
Kalia's face paled; her worst fear became reality - this Gyarados knew Ice Fang.
"Grovyle, stop using Mega Drain! Instead, rely on your speed to evade Gyarados's Ice Fang!" Kalia swiftly changed her command, realizing that facing an Ice Fang-learned Gyarados posed too great a risk for Grovyle.
Now, their only advantage lay in Grovyle's superior agility. Only by dodging Ice Fang would it have an opportunity to execute its moves; otherwise, even successfully casting Giga Drain would be futile if hit by Ice Fang immediately after.
Gyarados dove underwater, swimming directly towards Grovyle, exposing only its dorsal fin amidst splashing waves as it rapidly closed the distance.
Grovyle continuously leaped nimbly between rocks, attempting to increase the gap with Gyarados. However, the battlefield offered limited space for evasion.
In water, Gyarados swam exceptionally fast due to environmental advantages. Despite Grovyle having higher base speed abilities, they were rendered ineffective.
With a sudden splash, Gyarados burst out of the water, lunging at Grovyle with its massive body. This Gyarados measured approximately five to six meters long, revealing four sturdy teeth as icy chill radiated around it, instantly freezing droplets on its skin into crystalline ice.
Grovyle glanced frantically, feeling overwhelmed. The sheer size of Gyarados cast a daunting shadow over it, leaving no chance to escape.
In the next instant, Gyarados pounced on Grovyle, clamping down with its jaws and dragging both beneath the surface.
With a splash, water droplets flew.
"Oh no!"
Kalia felt helpless but had no choice; this was simply the disparity between Pokemon. Sia's Gyarados far surpassed her Grovyle, leaving her with no room for strategic command.
Even many beginner Trainers' Pokemon might struggle to defeat Sia's Gyarados, as it clearly exceeded the standard expected of red-star gym Pokemon.
Frustrated and powerless, Kalia knew she must continue the battle since she had already initiated it.
Grovyle, caught by Ice Fang, was dragged underwater with little chance to resist. In the next moment, the Gyarados flung Grovyle out of the water onto a rock.
Grovyle lay unconscious, unable to continue fighting, forcing Kalia to recall it back into its Poke Ball.
Witnessing Grovyle defeated so swiftly angered Lian greatly. This would significantly lower their combat rating, especially since Grovyle hadn't dealt any significant damage. Now, the burden rested solely on him for the remainder of the battle.
Lian couldn't help his irritation towards Sia. Comparatively, Gyarados boasted much higher base stats than Grovyle, placing them on entirely different levels. Even the level of Sia's Gyarados was considerably higher than that of Grovyle.
This victory relied purely on attribute superiority and level dominance. Sia appeared smug, but Lian was determined to show him what true strength meant.
