Three days had passed since the commencement of the Extreme Speed Conference, marking the end of the first round. All fifty preliminary matches concluded by yesterday evening.

Over these three days and fifty competitions, several outstanding Pokemon emerged. Naturally, the most popular among them were Ninjasks, historically known for winning numerous championships.

However, each conference brought unexpected twists; in the previous edition, a Swellow defeated the Ninjasks to claim the top spot.

Fifty Pokemon successfully advanced to the second round, which followed a similar group-based format. The contenders were divided into ten groups, with five Pokemon competing in speed races within each group.

Today marked the start of the second round. Early in the morning, Lian met up with Kalia and Julian. After swapping roles with Charmeleon, they headed towards the Blue Grasslands together.

To avoid exposure, Kalia hadn't visited the Pokemon Center for combat training during these past few days. Many other Trainers participating in the Extreme Speed Conference frequented the center, increasing the risk of discovery.

Fortunately, the Pokemon Hotel had its own battle fields, but these were typically frequented by adult Trainers. While their skills might not be exceptional, most of their Pokemon were fully evolved forms. Occasionally, encountering high-level Pokemon left little room for maneuvering, making the training less effective compared to the battle fields at the Pokemon Center.

Upon arriving at the Blue Grasslands, Kalia and Julian headed straight to the competition area for the group draw.

The fifty participating Pokemon were divided into ten groups. Since all advancing Pokemon from the first round possessed notable speed, the organizers consistently allowed Trainers to draw lots themselves, determining their Pokemon's group assignments. This way, any dissatisfaction with the outcome could only be attributed to bad luck during the draw.

Julian reached into the box, grabbed a paper ball, and upon opening it found the number '2' written inside, clearly indicating Lian was assigned to Group 2.

He glanced at the large screen displaying the current list of Pokemon for each group. Some Trainers hadn't arrived yet, so the lists weren't complete, but Group 2 already had some entries.

Lian also looked at the big screen, noticing that apart from his entry, three other Pokemon were confirmed for Group 2, with the remaining spots likely awaiting further draws.

The confirmed Pokemon for Group Two were Staravia, Linoone, and Yanma. For Lian, these three posed little to no threat.

Staravia and Linoone couldn't possibly outpace him without reaching Level 25 or higher. Yanma, with its Ability "Acceleration," still presented some danger, but initially, it wouldn't be faster than Lian; he just needed to seize the opportunity to defeat it.

Now, all that remained was to see what the last Pokemon in Group Two would be. As long as it wasn't one of the particularly challenging ones, Lian felt confident about advancing smoothly.

After waiting briefly, the final Pokemon for Group Two appeared: Scyther, which had left a strong impression on Lian earlier.

Lian didn't know the exact level of this Scyther, but based on its previous performance, it seemed at least comparable to his own Pokemon, indicating it must be around Level 25 or higher.

With such a high level, even though Hidden Power (Rock) held a four-times type advantage, it couldn't instantly defeat Scyther due solely to the significant level disparity, not because of any lack in Lian's offensive capabilities.

Unless Lian could significantly boost his Special Attack output, ensuring a one-hit knockout against Scyther before it had a chance to counterattack, victory might prove elusive.

Under normal circumstances, Scyther's Wing Attack shouldn't be able to instantly defeat Lian either. However, if Scyther possesses the Technician Ability, given Lian's current defense, he wouldn't be able to withstand its Wing Attack.

"We'll see how it goes when the time comes," Lian decided not to dwell on it further. He would adapt accordingly during the match. At least he faced Scyther instead of Swellow or Ninjask.

Those trainers encountering Swellow or Ninjask had slim chances of advancing, as these two Pokemon have consistently been strong contenders for the championship at past Extreme Speed Conferences.

Even Lian lacked confidence against them now, considering their speed abilities must already exceed 600 points.

"I drew Group Five; my luck is terrible."

Kalia also participated in the draw but seemed unfortunate, ending up with Group Five, which included Swellow.

With Grovyle's current speed ability value, there was no way it could compete with Swellow. Moreover, being a Grass-type Pokémon, it couldn't effectively counter Swellow, significantly diminishing Kalia's chances of advancement.

"I also drew for Group Two and will face Scyther. I'm unsure if Charmeleon can advance," Julian expressed concern, as he wasn't well-acquainted with Lian's capabilities.

Kalia reassured him, "It's okay if we don't advance; after all, the Extreme Speed Conference has many skilled beginner trainers, making it quite competitive."

Beginner trainers typically have Pokémon with significantly higher development compared to newcomers due to accumulated experience over time, which cannot be easily compensated for.

If Kalia had obtained three red star badges before participating in this conference, her Grovyle's speed would likely secure her a spot among the top three, with a strong chance of winning first place.

"The first group's race is about to begin."

With all Pokémon assigned to their respective groups, the competition officially commenced. The first group's Pokémon were already preparing at the starting line.

In Group One, three out of the six Pokémon were flying types, including Staravia, which was unsurprisingly common among the competing flying-type Pokémon.

Apart from the flying types, there were Pikachu representing the electric type and Frogadier representing the water type. Water-type Pokémon are rare in the Extreme Speed Conference, making their appearance noteworthy.

Pikachu's speed wasn't particularly fast, with its base stat barely reaching 90.

Frogadier likely had the highest speed base stat among the first group, but still falling short of 100, it was too low to endure until the final round even if it advanced further.

The competition swiftly commenced, and once again, the beautiful commentator Tina, riding her Staraptor, began providing live analysis.

"Hello everyone! The Extreme Speed Conference has now entered the second round, and we're about to witness the first match of this stage. It will begin in ten seconds."

Time ticked away, and with the referee's signal, the first-round race started as the Pokémon immediately burst forth from their starting positions.

Lian watched the large screen closely. As soon as the race began, Tina focused the camera on all five participating Pokémon, making their relative speeds instantly apparent.

To Lian's surprise, Pikachu was actually ahead of Frogadier. Although the gap appeared minimal, it was noteworthy considering there was a seven-point difference in their speed base stats. This indicated that Pikachu's level must be higher than Frogadier's.

As time progressed, the distance between the Pokémon gradually widened, and some even started interfering with those ahead of them.

The flying-type Golbat behind Staravia released a Supersonic attack, aiming to disrupt its opponent.

If Staravia were hit by Supersonic, it could become confused and disoriented, losing direction. By the time it recovered, catching up with the other Pokemon would be significantly challenging.

Golbat's attempt was successful; as Staravia vigorously flapped its wings, completely unaware of Golbat's sneak attack, it fell under the influence of Supersonic. Instantly, Staravia became bewildered, wobbling uncontrollably in mid-air, unable to maintain flight.

Seeing the effectiveness of its strategy, Golbat repeated the move, targeting Pikachu and Frogadier with another Supersonic attack.

However, Pikachu and Frogadier promptly noticed the threat. Pikachu swiftly retaliated, launching a Thunder Shock spell in response.

Golbat's gamble backfired; struck by the electric attack, it suffered severe damage and slowed down considerably, allowing the trailing Pokemon to quickly overtake it.

Pikachu didn't relent, continuing to battle while sprinting ahead, firing off more Thunder Shock attacks at Frogadier behind it.

Frogadier responded with a counterattack, unleashing Smokescreen. A dense cloud of black smoke surged toward Pikachu, intending to obstruct its vision.

The reason Frogadier refrained from using water-type moves was due to electricity conducting through water; if Pikachu happened to discharge its Thunder Shock, the current would travel along the water stream and directly harm Frogadier.

After successfully hitting Pikachu with Smokescreen, Frogadier took advantage of the obscured vision and unleashed Water Pulse, inflicting damage on Pikachu.

The first group's battle was intense, clearly influenced by their Trainers' commands, prompting them to actively engage each other rather than solely relying on speed.

Following a fierce skirmish, Frogadier emerged victorious. Pikachu, being inherently weak defensively, could not withstand Frogadier's second Water Pulse attack.

With only three Pokémon still capable of continuing, it seemed highly likely that Frogadier would secure the advancement spot.

Shortly thereafter, Frogadier effortlessly reached the finish line first, securing its qualification for the next round.

"It's my turn now."

Next up was the second group's race, making Lian slightly nervous. He faced Scyther, which was significantly higher level than his own Pokémon.

Additionally, he needed to be cautious of Yanma's Accelerate Ability, ensuring not to let it build momentum inadvertently, as once activated, even ten Lians couldn't catch up.

Lian planned to take out Yanma swiftly at the start, then adapt based on the situation. Observing the first group's match made him realize that in this second round, all participating Pokémon had received instructions from their Trainers to go all-out. It was no longer just about racing speed; direct attacks were expected.
