Chapter 820: CH200 (814), Not Flying Types But Dragons (2)
Turtonator being at the (low) dark gold stage was a good opponent for Kun/Azuraid, and if not for Perish Song I was confident that Kun could have probably ground it down. However, being on a literal time limit that was not an option, so Kun went all out from the the start, especially since he had already expended quite a bit of energy to release more demanding moves like Thunder, and Scorch Pump back to back. It was also unfortunate that Kun knew no dragon-type moves since his water and ice moves had no advantage against the fire dragon turtle.
Nonetheless, even though that was the case, Kun still went with Hydro Pump as his main move to attack Turtonator since it was the move that Kun could use to cause the most damage to Turtonator thanks to its inherent power and the STAB it enjoyed. Yet, despite Kun's endeavor to keep his distance and snipe Turtonator from afar to avoid any damage to himself due to a small hope that he might be able to endure Perish Song, Kun still ended up falling once Perish Song triggered. He might have had a chance to endure it if he had been stronger, but as a (high) gold Pokemon of a non-tanky species, near complete LB or not, Perish Song proved too much.
I had considered letting him use Endure but even if he had been able to cling to consciousness with it, he would have been unable to make use of that to deal with Turtonator. Roost on the other hand required him to be immobile while he healed and Turtonator had been eying him the whole time so he would have been hit and knocked out before Roost could have taken effect. We would have to see if Kun could learn Aqua Ring to close that gap in the future. While Aqua Ring's healing effect was considerably weaker, it was an over-time move and did not require the user to stay in place, so it would have definitely been useful here.
Regardless, Kun got to face two dark gold dragons, beating one while causing some damage to the second one, so he had already done a pretty good job. I naturally praised him as I recalled him before briefly considering whom I should send out next. I briefly contemplated if I should skip Ali/Gallade and directly go with Abzu/Milotic since the opponent was using dark gold stage Pokemon, but after thinking about it some more I concluded that Ali could definitely take Turtonator. In fact, there was a pretty good chance that Turtonator would be helpless against Ali since my boy currently had Wonder Guard saved as his extra ability.
Thanks to Wonder Guard only flying, ghost, as well as fairy moves could cause Ali any damage, and I was confident that Turtonator could not learn any offensive moves of those types outside maybe of some special/fortuitous circumstances, but the chances of that were incredibly minuscule, so I took out Ali's ball and called him out. There was no special reaction from either Joey or the audience at my choosing a Gallade, but doubtful exclamations questioning my choice followed once the referee gave the starting signal, and Ali reflexively Teleported out of the way of Turtonator's Flamethrower, revealing that he like Kun before him was at the (high) gold stage.
I ignored those and telepathically told Ali that he could fight without restraint/worry since I was confident that Turtonator knew no moves that could harm him. There were outcries of disbelief when Ali did not bother dodging Tortunator's next move. The Dragon Pulse bathed Ali in draconic energy without causing my boy any harm at all, and I could see Joey staring confusedly at what was happening. That evolved to pure disbelief as his Turtonator got to experience a defeat under a thousand cuts as Ali cut it/wore it down with a multitude of slashing moves while none of Turtonator's moves managed to inflict any damage even though it looked like they all landed since Ali did not bother dodging them.
Whether it was Flamethrower, Dragon Tail, Fire Blast, Iron Tail, Fire Spin, Dragon Pulse, Dragon Claw, Body Slam, Heat Wave, Payback, Shell Trap, or Focus Blast, none of them affected Ali. The crowd had initially been shocked to see Ali unharmed after being hit by a move. There were outbursts asking how this was possible, but I obviously did not share that with either the crowd or Joey. The other party tried to mix in moves with a wide coverage to test if the Gallade they were seeing was an illusion or something like that while the real one was hiding somehow, but those obviously failed, and by the time Turtonator tried Payback there were no more gasps, cheers, or inquisitions.
There was just an unbelieving silence, which briefly gave way to keen expectation when Turtonator tried to use Hyper Beam due to the prestige of the move. Yet, Hyper Beam proved just as useless as everything else, and the immobilization that followed allowed Ali to chain Psycho Blades pushing Turtonator to the brink. Probably aware of that, Joey ordered Turtonator to use Explosion in a final attempt to hurt Ali. Dust rose after Turtonator detonated, and expectations rose along with it. When the dust dispersed and Ali was revealed standing without a scratch with Tortunator lying defeated at his feet, the crowd broke out in a mix of cheers and confused outbursts.
Seeing the beaten Turtonator I could not help but wonder what Pokemon Joey would send out next. If he did not send out someone capable of using flying, ghost, or fairy moves, the battle would end up the same way with his Pokemon being worn down without being able to do anything against Ali. I watched as Joey took a deep breath before he recalled his fallen fire dragon turtle. "You did your best," Joey whispered after staring at Turtonator's PokeBall for a few moments. "You wouldn't by chance feel like telling me why we couldn't touch your Gallade at all, would you?" he followed up with a wry smile after putting the PokeBall away.
"Nope," I replied succinctly, and he chuckled dryly. "Yeah, didn't think so," he returned before releasing a sigh. "Guess I'll have to hope that my hunch is right," he said before straightening his back. "Your Gallade might be weird, but this ain't over yet," Joey said firmly as he pulled out the PokeBall of his next Pokemon. The audience, which had silently listened to our exchange broke out into cheers at that declaration, while Ali and I watched Joey release a Noivern onto the field. Ali tensed up when he saw Noivern, and I did not blame him for that since Noivern was releasing (mid) dark gold undulations.
Still, I noticed Joey straighten at the exact moment he did that. Joey's eyes then met mine for a moment, and his being practically radiated a mix of "Gotcha", and "How is this possible". 'They seemed to have caught on, so be ready to dodge attacks again,' I telepathically told Ali, who gave me a mental nod. 'I suspected as much after my reaction,' Ali admitted sounding rueful. 'I shouldn't have tensed like that just because Noivern is going to be a hard challenge. I saw the guy's reaction; My tensing likely revealed to him that Noivern could harm me,' Ali followed up and I was just happy that he was keeping an eye on the overall situation even after winning earlier.
'So what if they inferred something," I began. "Don't worry about that and just do your best; Everything else is secondary,' I then assured him, and I saw Ali physically nod at that, so I stopped talking and we quietly waited for the referee to give the starting signal. That only took a few seconds, and as soon as it happened, Joey called for an Air Cutter. Ali Teleported behind Noivern to dodge that and I saw Joey fist pump at that, probably seeing it as a confirmation that that attack could have hurt Gallade. Noivern retracted its wings and did a half spin/pirouette to turn toward Ali before releasing an Air Slash at him while unfurling its wings, and Ali side-stepped that one as well.
The crowd, which had not caught up on the situation at first, finally caught onto the meaning of that exchange and cheered excitedly. I saw Joey smile happily, though he learned very swiftly that this did not mean that they had this battle in the bag. After dodging that Air Slash, Ali Teleported behind Noivern and attacked its back with an Ice Blade. Noivern showed impressive battle awareness and managed to barely dodge the attack, which caused a crescent of ice to pass a few centimeters above its body due to the ice energy that Ali's slash movement released, though it was more impressive looking than dangerous since it was just part of the ice energy that escaped Ali.
Nonetheless, it was impressive looking and that was all the audience needed to cheer again. While they did that, Ali and Noivern began to trade attacks. At some point, when the number of attacks kept rising it was simply impossible to dodge or block everything, so both Ali and Noivern got hit occasionally. Despite the difference in level between the two Ali gave as good as he took if not more thanks to Ice Blade, Sharpness, and his royal gene. Still, neither side was willing to back down the slightest bit, and after Noivern chose to tank an Ice Blade in order to land a near point-blank Air Slash on Ali's head, my boy fell to the ground unconscious.
The crowd cheered at that exchange, while Noivern landed in front of Ali after seeing him remain motionless once a few seconds had passed. The referee chose that moment to declare Ali unable to battle declaring Noivern the victor, who released a screech of triumph as soon as the referee spoke up, though things took an unexpected turn for most when mere moments after the referee finished his declaration Noivern slumped and fell forward before lying unmoving on the ground beside Ali.
I was not surprised by that at all since Noivern had been hit by a few Ice Blades before tanking that last one while offering nearly no resistance, so I had been expecting it to cling to consciousness. The relief it felt after its victory cry must have loosened its hold, and seeing Joey's lack of surprise it was clear that he had expected something like that as well. Seeing Noivern lie on the ground like that, the referee declared it unable to battle as well before telling us to recall our Pokemon. We followed suit and I praised Ali on his spectacular performance before putting the ball away and transferring it to Utopia so that he could recover.
"So, care to share what kind of flying type I'm going to be facing next," I teased Joey as I pulled out Abzu/Milotic's OceanBall, and he gave me a glare while gripping the PokeBall of his fourth/final Pokemon. "Very funny," he replied with a hint of heat in his tone. "Let's see if you can keep that up when my DRAGON buries the rest of your Pokemon," he followed up, once again stressing the dragon bit, which had me chuckle, though I could not help but wonder if the bury part was just symbolic, or if his next Pokemon would be a ground dragon, which would mean that it would be either a Flygon or a Garchomp.
The Flygon would likely be it if Joey meant the bury part literally, but either way, it would be a very good match-up for Abzu, so after returning a simple "We'll see", I waited for the referee to give the signal to release our Pokemon. As soon as that happened, Abzu appeared on my side while a (high) dark gold stage Flygon appeared across from us. The crowd cheered at the rare and strong species that showed up while the Pokemon in question lost no time to make their opening moves. Abzu went for Rain Dance, while Flygon tried to set off a Sandstorm. Yet, neither move took effect since their weather moves neutralized each other, invalidating both their opening moves.
