Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Pewter gym battle
The morning after his rigorous training session, Touma felt a vibrant hum of anticipation. His Pokémon were sharper, their new moves honed, and his mind was brimming with strategic possibilities. There was only one thing left to do in Pewter City before moving on: challenge the Gym.
He made his way through the familiar stone streets, the imposing structure of the Pewter City Gym looming larger with every step. Unlike the quaint shops, the Gym exuded an aura of ancient strength, its rocky façade hinting at the formidable trainers within. Taking a deep breath, Touma pushed open the heavy double doors.
Inside, the arena was a rough, craggy landscape, designed to give Rock-type Pokémon every advantage. At the far end stood a young man with spiky brown hair and perpetually closed eyes, a stoic expression on his face – Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader. Beside him stood a stern-faced referee.
"I'm here to challenge the Pewter City Gym!" Touma announced, his voice clear and confident, cutting through the ambient quiet.
Just then, the gym doors swung open again, and in rushed two familiar figures: Ash, looking as eager as ever, and Misty, a slight huff on her face from hurrying. They scanned the arena, their eyes widening as they spotted Touma already at the challenger's stand.
"Hey! It's Touma!" Ash exclaimed, pointing.
Misty's eyes narrowed slightly. "He's already here? And challenging the Gym Leader? Ugh, how does he always get a head start?"
Brock opened his eyes just a sliver, assessing Touma with a serious gaze. "Welcome to the Pewter City Gym. I am Brock, its leader. And you are?"
"Touma from Pallet Town," Touma replied, offering a polite, yet firm nod.
As the name left Touma's lips, Brock's almost-closed eyes snapped fully open for a fleeting moment, a spark of recognition, and then, respect, flashing within them. His easygoing posture stiffened. "Touma... the Junior Professor Touma?" he mused, a new gravitas in his voice. "I've heard about your work. It seems I won't be having an easy day. Consider me properly serious." He gestured to the referee. "The rules are simple: this will be a two-on-two Pokémon battle. The first trainer to have both their Pokémon unable to battle loses. Are you ready?"
"Ready when you are," Touma affirmed, a confident glint in his eye.
Ash and Misty quickly found a spot in the small spectator area.
"Wow, Touma's really good! He beat Team Rocket super fast back at Viridian!" Ash whispered excitedly.
"Yeah, but this is a Gym Leader, Ash," Misty retorted, arms crossed. "Rock-types are super strong, and Touma only has a Vulpix, a Pidgey and a Poliwag. What's he going to do?"
The referee raised his arm. "Trainers, send out your Pokémon!" he bellowed, then chopped his arm down. "Begin!"
"Alright, Geodude, rock and roll!" Brock called out, tossing his Poké Ball. With a flash, the small, boulder-like Pokémon with strong arms materialized, ready for battle.
Touma paused for a moment, a mischievous smile playing on his lips. "Poliwag, it's your time to shine!" He released his Tadpole Pokémon, who appeared cheerfully "Poliwag!"
"A Poliwag?" Ash blinked. "That's a Water-type! Good idea against Rock!"
Misty nodded, impressed despite herself. "Smart move, but Brock's Pokémon are tough. He'll need more than just a type advantage."
Brock, seeing the Water-type, gave a small, almost imperceptible nod of approval. "A good type choice against Rock-types, I'll give you that, Professor," he acknowledged. "But my Geodude is tougher than he looks!"
"Let's see about that," Touma murmured, then commanded, "Poliwag, Rain Dance!"
Brock's stoic expression faltered, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "A Rain Dance inside a gym?" he muttered, clearly caught off guard.
Ash scratched his head. "Rain Dance? But we're inside! Is he crazy?"
Misty, however, watched with a more analytical eye. "Wait... look!"
Indeed, instead of the usual torrent, Poliwag began to pulse with a soft, ethereal blue glow. The air around it grew heavy, shimmering with condensed moisture, and a fine, cool water mist began to swirl through the arena. It wasn't a drenching rain, but a humid, invigorating haze that subtly enveloped Poliwag, making the water-type attacks feel more potent. It was Touma's clever adaptation of the move for an indoor environment, subtly boosting Poliwag's special attack without flooding the gym.
"A clever adaptation, I'll admit!" Brock conceded, recovering quickly. "But it won't be enough! Geodude, Rock Throw!"
Geodude, still glowing from the mist, quickly gathered two small rocks and hurled them with surprising force towards Poliwag.
"Poliwag, dodge and use Water Gun while closing the distance!" Touma commanded, his voice sharp and precise.
Poliwag, swift and agile despite its stout form, twisted and hopped, expertly weaving through the incoming projectiles. As it dodged, a stream of focused water shot from its mouth, striking Geodude as Poliwag rapidly closed the gap between them.
"Woah! Poliwag's fast!" Ash cheered.
"He's closing in! Brock's Geodude is strong, but Poliwag's a slippery one," Misty observed, leaning forward.
Brock, seeing Poliwag's relentless advance, barked, "Geodude, dodge!" Geodude tried to shift its weight, but Poliwag was already too close, its small form a blue blur.
"Now, Poliwag, Bubble Beam! Point blank!" Touma's voice cut through the air.
Poliwag, practically nose-to-rock with Geodude, unleashed a powerful torrent of shimmering, high-pressure bubbles directly into Geodude's rocky form.
"Geodude, resist with Defense Curl!" Brock shouted, his voice laced with urgency. Geodude tensed, its body coiling to absorb the impact, but the point-blank Bubble Beam, super-charged by Poliwag's Modest Nature and the dampening mist, was overwhelming. The sheer force of the attack sent Geodude skidding back, a deep crack appearing on its stony surface of the gym floor before Geodude finally slumped, completely knocked out.
The referee raised his flag. "Geodude is unable to battle! Poliwag wins!"
"Yeah! Alright, Poliwag!" Ash pumped his fist, cheering loudly.
Misty, though still a little taken aback, had a look of grudging respect on her face. "Wow... he really is good. That was a quick battle."
Touma gave Poliwag a proud nod, and the little Pokémon puffed out its chest, delighted with its victory. One down, one to go!
