Chapter 38: Brock vs. Ash (1)

"Brock! You came over!" Ash said, seeing Brock sitting on the beach watching the Charmander and Squirtle battling. Ash walked closer and spoke.

Hearing a voice calling him from behind, Brock turned his head and saw Ash walking towards him.

Seeing Ash walk up beside him, Brock asked curiously, "Ash, weren't you supposed to be training Pikachu and the others? What brings you over here?"

"Well, Brock, I just finished assigning training tasks to Pikachu and the others, and then I saw you sitting here watching the Charmander battles. Since I didn't have anything else to do myself, I came over to say hello," Ash replied.

Hearing Ash, Brock thought for a moment, I don't have anything to do right now, and Ash doesn't either... Let's find something to do! Having decided, Brock suggested to Ash, "Ash, since neither of us has anything pressing to do right now, let's have a battle! Let's use our Charmander and Squirtle!"

Hearing Brock wanted to battle him, Ash excitedly replied, "Okay! I've gotten a lot stronger these past few months! I'll definitely beat you this time!"

Hearing Ash's confident words, Brock said, "Ash, let's give it a try then! We haven't had a proper, fair and square battle before. Let's do it now!" After speaking, Brock walked over with Ash towards where the Charmander and Squirtle were.

When Brock and Ash reached the battling Pokémon, they saw the Charmanders and Squirtles were fighting evenly matched. Brock then shouted loudly, "Charmander! Squirtle! Stop for a moment! I have something to say!"

As soon as Brock spoke, the Charmander and Squirtle stopped battling. They walked together over in front of Brock and Ash. Seeing the Pokémon before him, Brock looked at the Charmander and Squirtle, then said to Ash, "Ash, let's do it! We'll battle using Charmander vs. Charmander, and Squirtle vs. Squirtle. Sound good?"

Hearing Brock, Ash also looked at the Charmander and Squirtle before them and immediately agreed. Subsequently, both Brock and Ash got ready; they could start their battle at any time.

Now, Brock and Ash stood facing each other across a large open area. This area was set aside for the Charmander and Squirtle battles. Brock looked at Ash opposite him and shouted loudly, "Ash! Let's start with Charmander versus Charmander!"

Because Brock shouted loudly, Ash heard him clearly and gave an 'OK' hand gesture. Then he replied loudly, "No problem!"

After Brock and Ash confirmed they could begin, both trainers took out Poké Balls. (Because Brock and Ash were about to battle formally, they had both recalled their Charmander and Squirtle to conserve stamina). They threw their Poké Balls towards the field, and a red light flashed before both Brock and Ash. Just like that, two Charmander appeared on the field.

Seeing Brock's Charmander appear, Ash immediately commanded his own Charmander, "Charmander! Let's start with Flamethrower! Test out the opponent!"

Hearing Ash's command, his Charmander spewed a huge stream of fire from its mouth. This flame shot straight towards Brock's Charmander.

Brock saw Ash's Charmander use Flamethrower, with the flames heading straight for his own Charmander. Brock subsequently commanded his Charmander, "Charmander! Use Flamethrower too!"

Hearing Brock's command, his Charmander also expelled a massive burst of flames from its mouth, aimed towards Ash's side. The two Flamethrower attacks collided, followed by an explosion. Where the two Flamethrowers met, a large crater appeared. Sand, small pebbles, and dust flew everywhere, obscuring the view for Brock, Ash, and their Charmander. Seeing the dust on the field blocking everyone's line of sight, Brock thought it was a good opportunity. He subsequently commanded his Charmander, "Charmander! Run over there quickly and use Flamethrower on the other Charmander at close range!"

Hearing Brock's command, his Charmander quickly ran into the dust cloud.

On Ash's side, seeing the dust block his view, he planned to wait until the dust settled and he could see clearly again before continuing the battle.

But by this time, Brock's Charmander had already entered the dust cloud. It saw Ash's Charmander staring blankly towards Brock's direction. Brock's Charmander slowly approached Ash's Charmander, while Ash and his Charmander were completely unaware that danger was drawing near.

Just then, Brock's Charmander used Flamethrower with all its might. The flames shot straight towards Ash's Charmander. The moment the flames emerged from the dust cloud, Ash saw them heading for his Charmander. He yelled loudly to his Pokémon, "Charmander! Dodge quickly!"

Hearing its trainer's voice, Ash's Charmander instinctively tried to dodge. But just as Ash's Charmander moved to dodge, the Flamethrower reached its side. Ash's Charmander suddenly saw the flames rushing towards it, got a huge fright, and then tried desperately to dodge the Flamethrower.

But time waits for no one! In the end, Charmander couldn't dodge the Flamethrower. Just like that, Ash's Charmander was hit by the Flamethrower and lost its ability to battle. (Previously, the two Charmander had already been battling, expending considerable stamina. Then, Ash's Charmander used Flamethrower, expending more stamina. Finally, it was hit by another Flamethrower at close range. So, there was a reason Ash's Charmander fainted).

Once the sand, pebbles, and dust on the field had settled, Ash saw his Charmander was unable to battle. He immediately recalled Charmander into its Poké Ball. Holding the Poké Ball containing Charmander, he said, "Thank you, Charmander. You did your best. Rest well now!" After speaking, Ash put away Charmander's Poké Ball, then took another Poké Ball from his person and threw it out.

A red light flashed, and a Pokémon resembling a turtle appeared on the field. Yes, the Pokémon Ash sent out was Squirtle.

On Brock's side, seeing his plan had succeeded, he looked at his own Charmander, which was standing on the field panting heavily. He then took out its Poké Ball and recalled Charmander.

After recalling his Charmander, Brock spoke to the Poké Ball in his hand, "Thank you, Charmander, you did very well. Rest well now!" Brock put Charmander's Poké Ball away, then took out another Poké Ball and subsequently threw it out. A red light flashed, and another Squirtle appeared on the field.

Brock looked at the two Squirtle on the field, then shouted loudly to Ash, "Ash! I won the last round! Next up is Squirtle versus Squirtle! Let's see if you can beat my Squirtle!"
