Chapter 18: Betrayed by one who calls you friend
He couldn't wait to show Percy, so, he ran to cabin three and knocked, "Percy? Percy? I have to show you something!"
There was no noise from inside, not even a breath. Confused, he looked through the windows, Percy was nowhere to be seen. Strange… he knew Percy's schedule and he shouldn't have any training right now. Was he gone? No… it was far too early for that. The camp didn't end until August and it was only the 2nd of July. There were still 41 days till the end of camp. Maybe Percy was in the forest? It had recently been stocked up with new monsters and Percy had mentioned going hunting, though that shouldn't be for another few days, still, it was the only idea he had of where he could be.
He found Percy and Luke standing near the fist of zeus, A pit scorpion crawling on Percy's leg. They hadn't noticed him yet, so he snuck closer, close enough to hear their conversation.
"Kronos, that's who you serve", Percy said and the air grew colder, not like when Boreas came but a primal cold of malice.
"You should be careful with names"
"Kronos got you to steal the master bolt and the helm. He spoke to you in your dreams"
"He spoke to you too, Percy, you should've listened"
Alexander couldn't believe what he was hearing, Luke, the lightning thief, working with Kronos? He had been like a big brother to him at camp and now it turns out, he was rooting for their parents' destruction?
"He brainwashed you Luke"
"You are wrong, he showed me-"
Alexander couldn't listen to this crap anymore. Luke was betraying them, betraying his first real friend in so long. He jumped up, transforming snowstorm into its blade form and swinging it at Luke. He had just enough time to parry. He had a new sword, celestial bronze on one side and steel on the other.
"Alexander? You should join me, Alex! Together we can make the gods pay for ignoring us!" He looked mad, a glint of insanity behind those blue eyes.
"Screw you and screw Kronos!" Alex swung his sword with wild frenzy.
"Argh!" Percy cried behind him. His eye flickered to his friend, the pit scorpion had stung him.
"Defeat me and let Percy die or let me escape and save Percy, I wonder what you'll do, son of winter", Luke mocked, running away. Alexander wanted to run after him, to stop Kronos from rising but Percy was more important. He wouldn't let his friend have a fate similar to Thalia's or worse yet, have him actually die. He smashed the pit scorpion under his boot and carried Percy out of the forest. Along the way, Annabeth had also materialised, she had seen the whole interaction, behind the invisiblity, "Chiron! Chiron help!"
The centaur was there in a blink, "what happened?"
"Luke… betrayed us…", Percy groaned.
"We can talk about that later, he was stung by a pit scorpion, we need to help him!"
"A pit scorpion? Quick, get some ambrosia to slow the poison, there should be some in the infirmary and-"
Alex pulled a piece of ambrosia out of his inventory and placed it in Percy's mouth. Color returned to his face but he would still die without proper care. This had bought them 30 minutes tops. They carried him to the infirmary and Chiron, together with the most experienced Apollo kids, worked to save Percy's life. By the time that Percy was stable, the story had spread about how Luke had betrayed the camp.
Later, they realized about ¾ of the Hermes cabins' unclaimed kids and half of the kids from minor gods had fled the camp with him. It was pretty clear what was happening. Annabeth, Percy and Alexander might've prevented one war but another was fast approaching, a war that would bring untold suffering to mortals, demigods and gods alike…
The Fourth of July celebration was cancelled, no one was in a festive mood. The Hephaestus cabin was very down when they had to take down their firework display which had taken them a week to build.
In the dungeon, he told Thalia what happened and she was furious. Luke had been like an older brother to her and now, he betrayed everything she had died for, turning away from peace and onto war, "that snivelling! Scumbag! Brother my ass!", she screamed as she hacked away at monsters.
The clay bead for that year was a green trident, unanimously voted for by the counsellors. Alexander decided to stay at camp, whilst Percy, who had recovered, went back home. Home… camp half blood was Alexander's home now.
