Overlord: Enter The New World

Chapter 21: Friends

The warm morning sun poured through the windows of Marcus's penthouse, illuminating the minimalist furniture and polished floors. Outside, the city buzzed with life, the hum of cars and faint chatter of people filling the air. Marcus stretched as he stepped away from his gaming pod, cracking his neck and rolling his shoulders. After hours immersed in YGGDRASIL, conquering sanctuaries, and grinding for levels, he decided it was time to spend the day away from the virtual world.

"Right," Marcus muttered to himself, heading toward the kitchen. "Time to remind myself I have a real life too."

Marcus began his day with a simple but satisfying breakfast—scrambled eggs, toast, and a protein shake. The kitchen was equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, a reflection of his recent success in the tech industry. As he sat by the window, enjoying the view of the bustling city below, Marcus's mind drifted to his upcoming plans. He had promised Jake, his gym buddy and friend, a workout session followed by lunch, and later in the evening, he had plans to meet a few friends at a local board game café.

It was a rare day off from the grind, and Marcus intended to make the most of it.

The clang of weights and the rhythmic thuds of treadmills greeted Marcus as he walked into the gym. The familiar scent of rubber mats and faintly lingering deodorant brought a grin to his face. Jake was already there, mid-set, his lean frame pushing through reps on the bench press.

"About time you showed up," Jake called out, grinning as he racked the weights. "I was starting to think you'd forgotten how to lift."

Marcus smirked, dropping his gym bag on the floor. "You wish. Let's see if you can keep up today."

The two dove into their workout routine, alternating between lifting, cardio, and a bit of friendly competition. Between sets, they exchanged banter, Jake poking fun at Marcus's gaming habits while Marcus teased Jake about his obsession with perfecting his form.

"So," Jake said, wiping sweat from his brow after a particularly grueling set, "how's YGGDRASIL treating you? I heard about your latest conquest from some of the players online. You're starting to build quite the reputation."

Marcus chuckled, taking a sip of water. "It's… intense. But honestly, it's the most fun I've had in a long time. The new subclasses are making things interesting."

Jake raised an eyebrow. "Still not enough to get me back into VR gaming, though. I'd rather take on real-life challenges."

"Like trying to out-bench me?" Marcus shot back with a grin.

Jake laughed, shaking his head. "You wish. Let's hit one more round, then I'm starving."

After their workout, Marcus and Jake headed to a small café near the gym. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and grilled sandwiches filled the air as they found a quiet table by the window. They ordered quickly, both opting for protein-packed meals to refuel.

"So," Jake said, leaning back in his chair, "what's next for you? Any big plans outside of gaming?"

Marcus shrugged, swirling his iced coffee. "Honestly? Just trying to find some balance. The game's been great, but days like this remind me how important it is to unplug now and then."

Jake nodded in agreement. "That's good to hear. You've got the resources to enjoy life, so don't let it pass you by."

As they ate, the conversation shifted to lighter topics—movies, upcoming events in the city, and Jake's latest attempt at joining a rock climbing group. Marcus found himself laughing more than he had in days, the easy camaraderie with Jake a refreshing contrast to the intense focus required in YGGDRASIL.

Later that evening, Marcus arrived at the Dice and Brew Café, a cozy spot tucked away in one of the city's quieter neighborhoods. The walls were lined with shelves of board games, and the tables were scattered with players engrossed in everything from strategy games to cooperative adventures.

Marcus was greeted by a small group of friends he hadn't seen in weeks. Among them were Clara, a sharp-witted writer with a love for word games, and Ethan, a software engineer who had introduced Marcus to YGGDRASIL years ago.

"Marcus!" Clara exclaimed, waving him over. "Thought you were too busy conquering the virtual world to hang out with us mere mortals."

Marcus grinned, taking a seat. "Just building my empire one dungeon at a time. What are we playing?"

Ethan slid a box across the table. "We're starting with Kingdoms in Peril. Think you can handle it, or are you too used to VR strategies?"

"You're on," Marcus replied, cracking his knuckles.

The evening was filled with laughter, playful rivalries, and a surprising amount of strategy as they worked through the board game. For Marcus, it was a reminder of the simple joys of real-world connections—the shared jokes, the friendly competition, and the warmth of spending time with people who cared.

By the time Marcus returned to his penthouse, the city was quiet, the glow of streetlights reflecting off the glass buildings. He set his bag down and stretched, feeling a pleasant exhaustion from the day's activities.

Looking out over the city skyline, Marcus couldn't help but feel grateful. His life was a mix of passions—immersing himself in the fantastical challenges of YGGDRASIL while staying grounded in the connections and moments that made the real world worth living.

"Not a bad day," he said to himself, smiling as he headed to bed. "Not bad at all."
