Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Banquet Tensions
"Don't say that..."
Autumn Summer gently scolded her younger cousin in a low voice.
Seeing Heather Summer's confused little face, like she wanted to ask something, Autumn quickly cut her off. "Here, Heather, let me introduce you. This is my classmate, Vincent Fox. He's the one who holds the record for two top-tier mission evaluations!"
Heather's eyes lit up instantly, staring at Vincent with surprise and admiration. "Ah! I've heard of you! That's amazing! But..."
She tilted her head and asked with genuine curiosity, "Is it true you bonded with a C-Rank hero? Why would you choose such a useless one?"
It was a blunt question that could easily embarrass someone.
Of course, Heather meant no harm.
To put it nicely, the girl was just straightforward she said whatever came to mind.
To put it bluntly, she could be a total airhead.
"Don't talk nonsense," Autumn tugged her cousin closer and turned to Vincent apologetically. "Sorry, Vincent. She's my cousin, just a few months younger than me. She blurts things out without thinking..."
"It's fine," Vincent replied with a smile, looking at Heather. "Nice to meet you."
Heather realized her question might've been a little rude. But seeing Vincent wasn't mad, she giggled. "Nice to meet you too! You're actually pretty cool..."
Then, a mischievous glint flashed in her eyes as she tugged Autumn's sleeve and whispered into her ear, "Sis, is he your boyfriend?"
Autumn shot her cousin a warning glare.
Just then, a cheerful and handsome young man walked over.
"Heather, I've been looking for you. So this is where you've been."
With a sunny smile on his face, the young man strolled over to the group. The moment his eyes landed on Autumn, his expression froze slightly. A trace of amazement flickered across his gaze, then quickly vanished.
"Are these your friends?" he asked, still smiling brightly. He turned to Autumn and offered a handshake. "Hi, I'm Heather's class monitor."
Autumn raised an eyebrow and didn't extend her hand.
Her first impression of him wasn't good at all.
As she hesitated, another hand reached out Vincent's.
"Hello. We're from Martial Saint Academy," he said calmly.
He hadn't formally confessed to Autumn yet, but in his heart, she was already his girl.
And this slick pretty boy was trying to hit on her right in front of him? No way he'd let that slide.
"Martial Saint Academy?" the young man repeated with a slight frown.
Wasn't that some second-rate academy?
Why would Heather be hanging out with someone from there?
He wasn't dumb.
It quickly became clear that Vincent was deliberately stepping in to block him from shaking hands with the girl.
The young man smirked inwardly.
He figured Vincent was just another suitor trying to cut him off.
With a smile on his face, he said, "Oh, a top student from Martial Saint Academy? My apologies!"
As he spoke, he tightened his grip and tried to crush Vincent's hand in a show of dominance.
If he couldn't woo the beauty, he'd humiliate the guy standing in his way!
Vincent raised an eyebrow, instantly sensing the pressure in the handshake.
Oh?
Trying to compete in strength?
Vincent smiled.
He had offered the handshake mainly to defuse the tension, to give the guy an out and avoid making a scene.
But the guy didn't take the hint. Instead, he chose hostility.
Trying to make him look weak?
Let's see who ends up embarrassed.
Vincent began to squeeze back just a little.
If he really went all out, he could turn the guy's hand into mush.
At first, the young man's smile remained.
His strength stat was nearly 120. He was confident it'd be enough to make this pretty boy wince.
But slowly, that smile began to fade.
No matter how hard he squeezed, Vincent's hand didn't move at all.
Worse, the pressure from Vincent's hand began to increase steadily, until it was almost unbearable.
Oh no.
The young man panicked and tried to pull his hand back.
But it was locked in place.
He couldn't escape.
Vincent had no intention of letting him off easy.
Crack. Crack...
The sound of joints shifting rang out from the young man's hand.
His face turned beet red, jaw clenched tight in pain.
A moment later, the pain became too much.
"Ahhh! Let go!!"
He howled in agony, loud enough to turn heads across the banquet hall.
Dozens of curious stares landed on him. His face burned with shame, wishing he could crawl into a hole.
Finally, Vincent let go.
This wasn't the right time to start a real fight it would only cause trouble for his classmates.
Otherwise, the guy's hand would've been completely crushed.
Even so, his hand was already deformed.
He shot Vincent a venomous glare, as if he wanted to kill him on the spot.
"What are you two doing?" Heather finally caught on, blinking in confusion.
Vincent gave a faint smile. "This guy wanted to test my grip strength. I guess I overdid it. You okay?"
The young man glared daggers at him. "Martial Saint Academy. Got it. I won't forget you."
With that, he turned to Heather. "The teacher's looking for us. Come on."
"Oh... okay," she replied, dazed, and followed after him.
Once they were gone, Autumn looked at Vincent with a teasing smile.
She was sure he had been jealous just now.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Vincent asked, puzzled. "Is there something on my face?"
Autumn giggled. "No, I just thought you looked kind of cute just now."
Vincent sweatdropped. "Calling a guy 'cute' doesn't feel quite right, does it?"
That only made Autumn laugh harder.
But her smile faded quickly. Her brows furrowed in worry. "Vincent, I don't think Heather's class monitor is a good person. I'm afraid she might get taken advantage of."
Autumn was smart. She had clearly seen what had just happened.
The guy had failed to flirt with her, so he took it out on Vincent and ended up humiliating himself.
A guy like that wasn't just a creep. He was manipulative and bitter.
Someone like Heather, who was too naive for her own good, could easily get hurt if she got too close to him.
"What can you do? She's just your cousin. Even if you can protect her for now, you can't do it forever," Vincent replied.
Autumn sighed, helpless.
He was right. She had no right to tell Heather who she could be friends with.
All she could do now was hope Heather had the good sense to stay away.
After finishing their meal, the two of them returned to where Terry Yan and the others were waiting.
Vincent noticed Terry looking upset, his frustration written all over his face.
"What's up with Old Terry?" Vincent asked one of the students nearby. "Who ticked him off?"
After half a month of training, he'd gotten to know a few classmates well enough to ask.
Ben Carter leaned in and whispered, "It's that instructor from Godslayer Academy, Walter Wayne. He's here too. When Old Terry saw him, he got really pissed."
Vincent was surprised.
Walter Wayne still hadn't been fired?
After all the chaos last time and the deaths of so many elite students, that guy still kept his job?
He had to admit, the man really did have some pull.
"All full?" Terry asked the group.
Everyone nodded.
"Good. Then head back to your rooms and get some rest. The competition starts tomorrow. Don't go wandering around tonight. Once the matches are over, the school will give you a few days off to relax."
