Online Game: Lord Of The Wheel Of Destiny

Chapter 59: Chapter 59: City No. 041

The massive steel gates of Jiangzhong City slowly opened in front of Jiang Kai. He then boarded a military jeep along with Wei Ying, Lu Jun, and the man in black, and the group drove out of Jiangzhong City.

Ahead of their vehicle were seven identical jeeps leading the way.

This was the first time in twelve years that Jiang Kai had stepped outside Jiangzhong City since entering it with his family.

He turned back to look at the nearly 20-meter-tall steel walls of the city, topped with densely arranged cannons and numerous soldiers patrolling.

Wei Ying, seated beside him, suddenly spoke, "When Destiny Calling players return to Jiangzhong City carrying large amounts of nuclear soil, over 90% of our energy has to be allocated to these weapons. That's why the entire city goes dark after 8 p.m."

This was the first time Jiang Kai had heard such an official explanation.

As the vehicle drove further away, the scenery outside the window kept changing.

Jiang Kai's distant memories of the outside world had long faded, but seeing all this again filled him with an unprecedented sense of astonishment.

At first, the surroundings were barren, with only occasional tents set up by refugees and fully armed soldiers patrolling the area.

Once they were 20 kilometers away from Jiangzhong City, not a soul was in sight.

The abandoned roads were flanked by ruins, with collapsed buildings and occasionally some unknown, cow-sized beasts.

The beasts stretched their necks to watch the vehicles pass by, seemingly aware that they couldn't catch up. They simply stayed in place, lazily watching the convoy move on.

"Boss, we're almost at City No. 041," said the man in black from the front seat, turning around to give a reminder.

"City No. 041 used to be Jiangbei City," Wei Ying explained to Jiang Kai. "I remember it was once a prosperous metropolis."

Jiang Kai vaguely recalled his elder brother mentioning this city, but his memories were blurry.

A few minutes later, Jiang Kai saw the legendary City No. 041.

The place was littered with rubble. Roads were destroyed by collapsed buildings. Houses lay toppled in disarray, and even the few standing buildings were riddled with holes and entwined by vines.

The city was far from its former cleanliness. It was overrun with weeds, towering trees, and thick vines breaking through asphalt and brick roads. Like giant serpents, the vines twisted and rose unevenly across the surface.

What had once been a bustling urban center was now nothing more than a wasteland.

At that moment, a loud commotion echoed from not far away.

The man in black turned back and said, "The Jiangzhong City War God Hall's Team 12 is currently hunting there."

Wei Ying nodded. "Let's go take a look."

The roads ahead were impassable, so everyone disembarked and proceeded on foot toward the source of the noise.

Jiang Kai noticed that the people who got out of the vehicles were all sharp-eyed and nimble, each equipped almost exclusively with cold weapons.

But these cold weapons looked nothing like traditional ones. Their materials and designs resembled the weapons from Destiny Calling.

"They don't use guns?" Jiang Kai asked, surprised.

This time, it was the man in black who answered. "Against those beast gods, firearms are less effective. Our weapon materials are sourced from Ghost Star withdrawals."

"You can withdraw weapons from Ghost Star?" Jiang Kai asked.

"Of course. Once you reach an extraordinary class, you'll be eligible to withdraw heavier items, like ores. Using special ores from Ghost Star, we can craft extremely powerful cold weapons... or specialized firearms. But maybe because people spend too much time on Ghost Star, most still prefer cold weapons." The man in black explained calmly. "Of course, weapons alone aren't enough. The most important thing is that, after reaching an extraordinary class, we can also withdraw our attributes."

"Just like Destiny Calling initially claimed—truly transcending the ordinary."

As they spoke, the group approached the battle site.

Rounding a collapsed building's remnants, Jiang Kai saw a five-person team battling a massive monster.

Among the team, four were wielding cold weapons—long swords, greatswords, dual blades, and shields. One person stood at the back with a wooden staff, maintaining a safe distance from the monster while continuously waving the staff.

From the staff emitted various lights that enveloped the team members.

"There's a Life Gem on that staff," Jiang Kai observed. "Is he a doctor?"

Lu Jun chuckled. "He's a Tier 5 professional from Team 12, a Saint Healer."

"A barefoot doctor's Tier 5 class is Saint Healer... I thought barefoot doctors only went up to Tier 4?" Jiang Kai asked, bewildered.

Wei Ying smiled. "What you know is just the tip of the iceberg. You'll learn more in time."

Without a response, Jiang Kai could only continue watching.

The four melee fighters from Team 12 displayed superhuman physical prowess. They could leap four to five meters high, and each attack carried devastating force. When their weapons struck the monster, thunderous booms echoed.

"This kind of terrifying strength still can't take it down?" Jiang Kai shifted his gaze to the monster.

It resembled a wild boar but was enormous, standing over five meters tall.

Its body was dark brown, with two massive tusks protruding from its mouth and crimson eyes.

The creature charged at its enemies. When its charge missed, it rammed into a nearby building, creating a three-to-four-meter-wide hole in the structure's base.

"That's a Beast Soldier-level monster: the Sawtooth Tusker. Getting rammed by it is deadly, even in battle armor. If you're unlucky and its tusk pierces you, you're done for," the man in black said calmly.

When the Sawtooth Tusker left a massive hole in the building, Jiang Kai spotted three corpses behind it.

Judging by their features, it was likely a family of two adults and a child. Their bodies were already incomplete, leaving only bones and faint shapes to indicate they had once been human.

"Jiang Kai, your brother is truly incredible," Lu Jun sighed.

"This family was only about 30 kilometers from Jiangzhong City. If they had made it to the city, they'd have survived. Instead, they fell here and became food for beasts."

"Yet your brother, as a child, brought you two safely to Jiangzhong City."

The man in black and his companions joined the battle. With over twenty elite fighters participating, Team 12 finally managed to kill the Sawtooth Tusker.

Soon after, Team 12's leader approached Wei Ying and saluted.

"Commander!"

"Good work," Wei Ying acknowledged. "How's the hunt been?"

"Commander, in the past two months, there's been an increase in beast gods around the abandoned cities near Jiangzhong City. Our Team 12 has been hunting for seven days and killed four Beast Soldier-class monsters. But our supplies are depleted, so we planned to return after this hunt—then we encountered you."

Wei Ying nodded. "Seven days is a long time. Come back with us."

"Thank you, Commander. We'll collect the materials and head back."

As they left, Wei Ying's tone grew heavy, and he fell into silence, mourning the loss of two extraordinary fighters in a battle against beast generals.

Jiang Kai, too, remained quiet, staring out at the ruins of the city.

'So this is what it's like outside the city? Monsters, corpses, and destruction everywhere.'

Suddenly, Wei Ying spoke, his gaze distant.

"Jiang Kai, there are countless beast gods out here, countless corpses buried under these ruins. Many teams are fighting beast gods. Many extraordinary fighters have died here."

"Jiang Kai, after you refused to join the military last time, I thought about it for a long time. Later, when I learned you killed four members of the Falcon Squad alone, I finally understood."

"You have a brand-new class. That's why you didn't want to disclose your class or join the military."

Pausing, he continued, "It's regrettable, but your concerns are valid."

Wei Ying turned to Jiang Kai. "Regardless of whether you join the military, promise me one thing."

"What is it, Commander?"

"Never forget—you're a Huaxia citizen. Outside the city, countless compatriots are struggling to survive, just like you and your family once did. This is still our homeland."

"More than that, the beast gods are becoming increasingly rampant, threatening our remaining cities."

"So, Jiang Kai, promise me that one day, I'll see you on the battlefield against the beast gods."
