One Piece: Voyager of the Sea

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Adapting to Life at Sea — The Eve of a Major Event (Part 1)

The execution time of Fire Fist Ace… the execution time of Fire Fist Ace… Since Jialai saw this news, she could not stop thinking about it, day and night. She counted the days on her fingers, eagerly calculating when the execution would take place.

As the time grew closer, Jialai's mood became more erratic, bordering on madness.

Although she had never met Fire Fist Ace in person, the memories of her previous life left a deep impression of this person, and an inexplicable emotion drove her to desperately want to go to Marineford.

"Captain," Jialai finally spoke up as she changed the bandages for the last time that day.

"What is it?" Luo had already noticed that Jialai's mood had been odd for the past two days.

"You've seen the recent newspapers, right?" Jialai adjusted her coat and turned to face Luo. This was the first time in a long while that she had gathered the courage to look him in the eyes.

Luo nodded, lounging on the large sofa with his hands resting on the armrests. He seemed to enjoy this posture.

"Are you going?" Jialai hesitated for a moment, then went straight to the point, "To Fire Fist Ace's execution."

Upon hearing this, Luo raised an eyebrow slightly, looking surprised.

"You're going, aren't you?" Jialai immediately interpreted his reaction as confirmation of her guess and took a couple of excited steps forward, "Can I go too?"

Luo stared at her in silence.

"Please, let me go. I promise I won't cause any trouble. I beg you," Jialai pleaded, moving closer and sitting next to him. She almost leaned against him but didn't realize how close she was getting. She was desperate to visit Marineford, a place teeming with powerful figures, but without help, she would never get even a glimpse of it.

Excitement, unease, anticipation, and exhilaration… all these emotions mixed together, leaving Jialai at a loss for words. She couldn't tear her gaze away from Luo, afraid to miss any change in his expression.

Luo stared at her quietly, and for the first time, looked closely at her amber, crystal-like eyes, which gleamed brightly under the light, as if illuminated by a shining source. His gaze then flicked down to her slightly parted lips.

"Do you know Fire Fist?" Luo didn't seem to mind her proximity, even picking up the refreshing scent from her, but his expression showed a hint of displeasure.

Jialai immediately sensed his discomfort and quickly moved back, shaking her head, "I don't know him." Well, not really, considering she had never seen him in person.

Luo's expression shifted, then returned to his indifferent, carefree smile, "You can go back now."

Jialai's heart sank, and she looked at Luo with a pitiful expression. If she could, she would have rushed forward to cling to his arm and beg him playfully. But she dared not, especially after realizing her proximity had already irritated him.

Luo ignored her, tidied the medicine on the table, and turned to leave.

Jialai stumbled out of Luo's room, lost in thought. She didn't know when Luo and the others would depart, which kept her in a state of unease. Her mind was consumed with speculation about when they would set sail and what to do if they encountered the Marines. But she also couldn't shake the excitement—this might be her only chance to see Whitebeard, after all. If she missed this opportunity, she might never get another one.

Caught up in her conflicting emotions, Jialai finally made a decision: she would learn to swim.

Yes, swimming! Jialai had never been able to swim, neither in her past nor present life. In fact, she had always had a fear of water, a fear that turned into a nightmare after nearly drowning multiple times, once even almost being eaten by a Sea King.

But this time, she was determined to face her fear and learn to swim, to overcome her terror of the sea.

As for who would teach her, Jialai chose Bepo. After all, Jebaru always believed she was unsuited for pirate life and kept trying to persuade her to live a normal life. Perhaps Luo was influenced by his opinions, which is why he never fully acknowledged Jialai as a member of the Red Heart Pirates.

Bepo was happy to help Jialai learn to swim. The two of them took over the largest bathroom on the ship, likely because, on some level, Jialai knew it was a bathroom, so she didn't feel as scared.

After some hands-on training, Jialai was eager to try swimming in the open sea. But the two of them disagreed on how to practice in the water.

Bepo insisted on reporting to the captain, because on this ship, the captain's orders were absolute, and no one was allowed to act without his consent.

Jialai, however, was determined to sneak off and practice on her own. Once she mastered swimming, she would show everyone—then it would be more exciting.

She certainly didn't want to be seen as useless forever.
