Chapter 25: Chapter 25: The Hunt Begins
Water 7, Central Street.
Blueno blended in with the tourists, silently observing the bustling street.
Water 7 was a unique place.
Its thriving shipbuilding industry made it a prosperous city where neither the Marines nor pirates dared to act recklessly.
This was the true battlefield for intelligence agents.
Blueno patiently selected a location to open a bar.
This mission was simple—infiltrate Water 7, investigate the blueprints of the ancient weapon Pluton, and retrieve them for the World Government.
Investigating that "monster" was just an extra task.
About four paces behind Blueno, Reddy walked with his hands in his pockets, dressed like a tourist.
After treating Terry, Reddy had gained a group of orphans as informants.
He had given Haya and the others sketches of Rob Lucci and the other CP9 members.
He wasn't surprised that CP9 had arrived in Water 7 early.
The Life Design Diagram, a technology far ahead of its time, had always been considered taboo by the World Government.
So, he had deliberately left a glaring flaw.
With the Marines tied up due to Zephyr's incident and CP9's next mission being to infiltrate Water 7, his goal was achieved.
"The Door-Door Fruit… I will have it."
Reddy casually glanced at Blueno's back before quickening his pace.
Obtaining the Door-Door Fruit ability was a crucial part of his plan.
But he couldn't act recklessly.
As a CP9 member, Blueno represented the World Government—a far more terrifying force than even Golden Lion Shiki.
"Doflamingo's people should be arriving soon too," Reddy thought, a faint smile curling his lips.
No one was more suited to take the blame than Doflamingo.
The second goal of Reddy's bait was to lure Doflamingo into making a move.
"The Young Master wants us to investigate that monster. Where do we even start?"
Buffalo, the user of the Spin-Spin Fruit, flew over Water 7, frustrated as he asked Baby 5 for advice.
Water 7 was huge.
If that monster hid in the city's extensive sewer system, finding him would be nearly impossible.
Baby 5 was even more irritable, stomping on Buffalo's back. "Hurry up and land! We'll split up!"
Buffalo thought it made sense and quickly descended onto a secluded beach.
"I'll search the city. You keep watch from the sky," Baby 5 ordered before heading into town.
Neither of them realized that despite their caution in choosing a remote beach, they had still been spotted.
A small head peeked out from the rocks.
"Doctor Reddy said to report any Devil Fruit users… Yes, these must be the ones he's looking for." The boy watched as Buffalo took off again, then grabbed his small bag of seashells and ran toward the city.
He had just been diving for a large conch shell.
Though Reddy brought back plenty of fish every day, Terry still insisted they learn to fend for themselves.
No one objected.
Everyone knew Reddy would leave one day, and they couldn't grow dependent on handouts.
"Doctor Reddy!"
The boy rushed excitedly into the camp, clutching his meager haul.
Reddy was surrounded by children, all clamoring for him to tell stories of his adventures at sea.
"I found a flying Devil Fruit user!"
The boy mimicked a spinning propeller with his hand.
Reddy patted the little girl resting on his lap and smiled. "Alright, go check if your brother Terry's wounds have healed."
Terry's injuries were severe, and after enduring over two months of suffering, even with the potent recovery serum stimulating cell regeneration, he wouldn't heal in just a few days.
The children scattered.
Reddy stood up, hands in his pockets, and walked out of the camp.
Soon, he emerged from the sewers.
Water 7 was lively during the day.
Neither pirates nor Marines had absolute control over this shipbuilding hub.
By unspoken agreement, the city thrived as a tourist destination.
Reddy moved through the crowd, searching for Baby 5.
If Buffalo was here, his partner Baby 5 would naturally be in Water 7 too.
The method to find her was simple.
"You dare mess with me?!"
Reddy heard a rough, high-pitched voice and smirked.
There she was.
He pushed through the crowd.
Sure enough, Baby 5 had one hand gripping a thug's collar while the other had transformed into a blade pressed against his neck.
Behind Water 7's prosperity lay countless shadows.
Baby 5 wasn't yet the infamous assassin of the Donquixote Pirates, and the city's gangs loved targeting unaccompanied little girls like her.
They could fetch a high price in Sabaody Archipelago.
Baby 5 wanted to slice open the thug who'd tried to pickpocket her.
Didn't he know she had nothing left to steal?
But as more people gathered, Baby 5, who had no regard for morality, snarled, "Scram, or I'll cut you down!"
The crowd immediately dispersed.
No one wanted to mess with a Devil Fruit user.
In seconds, the street was empty—except for Reddy.
Baby 5, still fuming, saw Reddy hadn't run and stormed toward him, murder in her eyes.
Reddy smiled and shrugged. "Can you do me a favor?"
"O-Of course!"
Baby 5's rage instantly evaporated, replaced by flustered eagerness.
Reddy gestured for her to follow and walked away.
The thug was dumbfounded.
That's it?
If he'd known she was this easy to trick, he wouldn't have bothered pickpocketing!
"Where are we going?"
Baby 5, now being led out of the city, finally regained some common sense.
Reddy grinned. "There's something only you can help me with."
So happy!
Baby 5 forgot that following strangers was a bad idea and trailed behind Reddy, beaming as they reached a quiet beach.
Reddy stopped and turned, smiling politely. "Can I ask you to let me capture you?"
"Sure—"
Baby 5's intelligence flickered briefly before she snapped back to reality. "Who are you?"
Reddy shrugged.
Fine.
It wasn't going to be that easy.
Snap!
He clicked his fingers.
A Gene Beast materialized in front of him.
"The monster the Young Master wants… You're its master!"
Baby 5 smirked, her arms transforming into flintlock pistols.
Bang! Bang!
Two shots rang out.
The Gene Beast's chest bloomed with blood as it staggered and knelt on the sand.
"Stay right there!"
Baby 5 scoffed, then noticed Reddy fleeing toward the rocks. She considered shooting him but remembered the Young Master wanted him alive. Cursing, she dashed past the Gene Beast, chasing after Reddy.
"Can you slow down a bit?"
Reddy turned back, making a polite request.
"O-Okay."
Baby 5's intelligence short-circuited again, her pace slowing—until Reddy neared the rocks, and her brain rebooted.
"You bastard, you're messing with me!"
Baby 5 was livid, swearing to make him pay once she caught him.
Then Reddy suddenly turned, waved goodbye, and leaped behind the rocks.
"Don't you dare run!"
Baby 5 was furious.
The next moment, Reddy inexplicably jumped back out from behind the rocks.
Baby 5 froze.
Not… running anymore?
Shaking off her confusion, she charged forward, scowling.
"You—"
As she reached him, Reddy's right arm suddenly darkened with Armament Haki, and he punched her with enough force to send her flying.
Baby 5's consciousness faded into darkness, her last thought:
So… strong!
