Chapter 56: Farewell, Foundations, and Futures.
The morning sun painted the skies with shades of orange and gold, its rays dancing across the calm waters around Atharva Island. The Dragon Pirates stood at the docks, preparing their ship for departure. The air was thick with a mixture of excitement and sorrow as villagers and the departing settlers for Shela Island gathered to say their goodbyes.
Atharva, standing near the ship, supervised the loading of supplies. Crates of food, tools, and necessities were carefully stowed aboard under his watchful eye. Despite the activity around him, his mind drifted to the conversation he'd had with Lillie and Miko the night before.
A Difficult Conversation
In the quiet of their home, Atharva had called the two little girls to him. They came bounding into the room, their eyes wide with curiosity.
"What is it, brother?" Miko asked, her small hands clasped behind her back as she tilted her head.
Atharva knelt to their level, his expression unusually serious but filled with care. "I... I want to ask if you two could live here in the village with everyone else," he said carefully, his voice soft yet firm.
The room fell silent. Lillie and Miko exchanged glances before their eyes filled with tears. Their small bodies trembled as the realization hit them.
"Are you abandoning us?" Lillie's voice cracked, her words barely audible as she clutched her sister's hand.
Miko looked up at Atharva, her gaze full of hurt. "Why, brother? Don't you want us anymore?"
The sight of their tears pierced Atharva's heart. His resolve faltered for a moment, but he knew he had to explain.
"No, it's not like that!" he said quickly, his voice tinged with panic. "You know I love you both more than anything."
"But then why?" Lillie asked, her tears flowing freely now.
Atharva took a deep breath, steadying himself. "Our next journey will be dangerous, more dangerous than anything you've seen so far. I just want you to stay safe here, where you'll be cared for and protected."
Lillie wiped her tears angrily. "I don't care how dangerous it is! I'll stay by your side no matter what!"
Miko, emboldened by her sister's words, nodded fervently. "Me too! I'll behave like a good girl and listen to you! Please, don't leave us behind!"
Atharva felt a mix of emotions—pride, frustration, and an overwhelming sense of love. He knew he couldn't win against their determination. A small, defeated smile formed on his lips as he gently patted their heads.
"Alright," he said softly. "But if you're coming with me, you have to be ready for the harshness of this world. No matter what happens, you'll need to stay strong."
The girls threw their arms around him, their tears replaced with bright smiles. "We'll work hard, brother! We promise!"
Unbeknownst to them, Nami and Nojiko had been eavesdropping from the hallway. They let out relieved sighs and exchanged smiles, knowing that Atharva's family bond had only grown stronger.
Departures
Back at the docks, the atmosphere was heavy with emotion. Lillie and Miko, now cheerful, ran among the children of the village, saying their goodbyes and exchanging promises to return someday. Atharva watched them from a distance, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
Turning to Village Chief Brock, Atharva spoke with a tone of command and trust. "I'm leaving the village in your hands, Brock. Take care of it and the people here. Start trading with Conomi Island and Shela Island. Support each other when needed."
Brock nodded solemnly. "Understood, Lord Atharva. You've built something special here, and I promise to protect it."
Atharva placed a firm hand on Brock's shoulder. "Good. And when we establish a foothold in the New World, raise the flag. Let the world know this village is under my protection."
The chief saluted, his voice steady. "We will wait for the day we see your name in the papers again, Lord."
Hearing this, the villagers erupted in cheers.
"Take care, Lord Atharva!"
"We'll be waiting for your return!"
"May the sea favor you!"
Atharva smiled at their words, feeling a warmth in his chest. He had changed something here—something important.
Setting Sail
The Dragon Pirates finally boarded their ship. Nojiko took her place at the helm, her hands steady on the wheel. Nami, her navigator instincts in full swing, spread out a detailed map on the deck, plotting their next destination.
Lillie and Miko stood by the railing, their eyes fixed on the island as it grew smaller with every passing moment.
Atharva stood at the bow, the wind tugging at his coat. He stared ahead with a resolute expression. "No matter what happens," he thought to himself, "I will move forward with an unyielding will."
Myne's Journey
Simultaneously, Myne led a group of over 500 people toward Shela Island. Their journey, guided by Atharva's instructions, was filled with hope for a fresh start. Myne's heart swelled with gratitude for the man who had freed them from their chains and given them purpose.
On another ship, a merchant carried a sealed letter addressed to Genzo on Conomi Island. Inside were words of trust, humor, and plans that would shape the future of the interconnected islands.
The Winds of Change
The seas were alive with change. As the Dragon Pirates' ship disappeared over the horizon, the villagers of Atharva Island stood united, waving until they could no longer see the vessel.
Far away, forces unknown stirred in response to Atharva's rising influence. What awaited him and his crew was a mystery, but one thing was certain: the world was watching.
