Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Vengeance Fulfilled
"Do you understand now?" Teweist's face twisted into a triumphant grin, but the pain he couldn't conceal ruined his smug demeanor. "My ability allows me to twist the joints and limbs of others at will!"
Shanter said nothing, enduring the excruciating pain. With a sideways slash of his blade, he sent a sneaky underling sprawling in a spray of blood.
"Hahaha! Does it feel good?!" Teweist sneered, though his expression contorted in visible agony.
"Humph!" Shanter retorted with a cold smile. "And yet, doesn't it hurt you just as much?"
Teweist's face froze. Forcing a laugh, he said, "Clever boy! So, you've figured it out? It's true, whenever I use my ability on others, I suffer double the pain. But—" he smirked, twisting his right hand. "—I won't get injured!"
"Then how about this?" Shanter activated his Armament Haki, shaping it into needles and stabbing it fiercely into his left arm.
Shanter's mastery over Armament Haki was remarkable. Though the quality and quantity of his Haki had room for improvement, his ability to manipulate its form so skillfully was unparalleled in the One Piece world.
As Shanter had predicted, Teweist screamed in pain.
"Humph! When you use this ability, it seems your pain receptors are linked to mine!" Shanter ignored the agony and stabbed his left arm repeatedly.
Teweist howled, losing the strength to twist Shanter's right hand further, yet stubbornly continued to attack Shanter's left arm joints.
The pain was unbearable, even for Shanter. Self-inflicted injuries weren't something a sane person would resort to—was Shanter sane? But the hatred buried deep in his heart for over eight years had fermented into a potent brew, one that drowned out all pain.
"You're ruthless!" Teweist howled, writhing in torment.
"To kill you, I'd sacrifice more than an arm—even my life!" Shanter's face twisted into a feral snarl as he swung his blade, felling the underlings who dared interfere.
Teweist, once a notorious pirate, had fled the Grand Line ten years ago after a battle left him terrified. Retreating to the West Blue, where neither pirates nor marines could rival the Grand Line's might, he gradually regained his confidence.
"Your life, huh?" Teweist's ferocity returned as he sneered. "Let's see about that!"
With a sickening crack, Teweist twisted Shanter's left forearm bone.
The searing pain nearly caused Shanter to black out, but he gritted his teeth and pressed on. Meanwhile, Teweist, enduring double the pain, collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.
"Die!" Shanter seized the opening, disregarding the swords and knives slashing at him from all sides. He endured three or four fresh wounds before plunging his blade toward Teweist's heart.
Teweist, though desperate, knew the weight of life versus pain. Unable to rise, he rolled away in a pathetic "lazy donkey roll."
Shanter refrained from mocking Teweist's ridiculous maneuver, instead unleashing a flurry of strikes with his blade, many of which embedded into the ship's deck.
"You little brat! I'll finish you off now—you deserve to die!" Teweist's pain began to subside. More precisely, he had adapted to the agony.
"It's you who deserves death!" Shanter's swift sword slash cut a lock of Teweist's hair. "How many innocent lives have you taken over the years? The blood on your hands demands retribution!"
"Innocent? Weakness is the ultimate sin on this sea! The law of the jungle is absolute!" Teweist dodged Shanter's attacks with increasing composure.
"Retribution exists! You'll get what you deserve!" Shanter's sudden outburst surprised even himself.
"Retribution?" Teweist sneered, unfazed. "I've been a pirate for over thirty years. I've killed thousands, if not tens of thousands! And if you count those indirectly destroyed by my crew, the number is well into six figures. I've never believed in retribution, nor have I seen it!"
"Is that so? Then, have you truly looked at the sea beneath your feet?" Shanter's blade flashed once more.
"Oh? What do you mean?" Teweist used the distraction to prepare another attack.
"The sea has twenty thousand eyes watching you." With those words, Shanter's assault intensified, forcing Teweist into a desperate defense.
Teweist's confidence wavered—he realized Shanter was making a final stand, a desperate but ferocious onslaught.
Teweist decided to counterattack with equal ferocity.
"Aaargh!" Teweist roared as he exerted his ability. Shanter felt an excruciating pain shoot through his spine.
"Damn it! He's injured my spine!" Shanter cursed inwardly.
"So be it! I never planned to leave here alive anyway." Shanter's face darkened. A trace of guilt and tenderness emerged. "I'm sorry, little sister. It seems your brother can't accompany you to the ends of the earth after all."
Lost in thought, Shanter failed to evade a spiraling blade that slashed a deep wound across his face.
"Ugh!" Shanter wiped the blood from his face and swung his blade relentlessly at Teweist.
But suddenly, he collapsed, his upper body going limp.
"Little brat," Teweist's voice trembled, his body battered but his malice unyielding. "Your spine is broken, isn't it?"
"Getting me to this point… You're the first! I promise you'll suffer a fate worse than death!" Teweist ground his boot into Shanter's face, leaving it mangled and bloody.
"Die already!" Shanter's limbs burst with power, throwing Teweist off balance. With an unnatural twist of his broken left hand, Shanter drove his blade into Teweist's chest.
The pirates around them froze in shock. Shanter, seeing his strike succeed, twisted the blade, reducing Teweist's insides to pulp.
"Ha… haha…" Shanter laughed through blood-filled lips, his voice eerie and hollow.
Finally, utterly spent, Shanter collapsed into unconsciousness.
