Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Garp the “Unreliable”
"Jon, you're coming with me? Well, that's fine."
Hearing Tsuru's instruction for Jon to follow him, Garp didn't hesitate and instead smiled cheerfully in agreement.
"There's this guy who's been practicing Iron Head Kung Fu and causing quite a ruckus lately. Kong asked me to put him in his place. This is a great chance to take Jon along so he can see some action."
"Garp, I'm entrusting Jon to you. If anything happens to him, I won't let you off easily." Tsuru warned Garp.
Garp patted his chest confidently and said, "With me around, nothing will happen to the kid. Tsuru, don't worry!"
"Jon, although Garp can be a bit unreliable at times, he's a very dependable person. Learn as much as you can from him."
Garp immediately looked aggrieved and shouted, "Tsuru! When have I ever been unreliable? I'm not only dependable—I'm totally reliable! If Jon learns just a fraction of my abilities, he'll be punching Golden Lion and kicking Whitebeard in no time!"
In the current New World, the Golden Lion was the strongest, followed closely by Whitebeard and Roger. After them came Charlotte Linlin. As for Kaido, he had yet to make his rise and was only a relatively powerful pirate at this time.
Garp's boast echoed loudly, but neither Tsuru nor Jon paid him much attention. Jon, although not as familiar with Garp as Tsuru was, still knew what kind of person Garp was.
"All right, Jon, follow Garp later. He's about to set off."
Tsuru instructed Jon. Garp had come to say goodbye to Tsuru before departing. She had been considering assigning Jon a mission, and Garp's timing was perfect. Having Jon follow Garp not only ensured his safety but also offered him a valuable learning opportunity.
"Yes, Vice Admiral!" Jon replied loudly.
Tsuru looked at Garp and asked, "Why haven't you left yet?"
"Oh! Right, I need to get going. Well then, see you later, Tsuru!"
Scratching his head, Garp had originally wanted to chat with Tsuru a bit longer, but since she was rushing him off, he could only leave with a sullen expression.
"Jon, hurry up and get ready—I'll be waiting for you over there."
Jon wasted no time. After leaving the office, he returned to his quarters, grabbed his gear, and quickly made his way to the port.
"Damn, I should've known he wouldn't be reliable. Why did I even believe him?"
Brimming with excitement, Jon reached the port, only to find that Garp wasn't there. In fact, not even Garp's crew was present—it was clear that they weren't ready to depart yet.
Jon ground his teeth in frustration. When he'd watched the anime, Garp's goofy and unreliable nature had seemed funny.
But now that he was experiencing it firsthand, it wasn't amusing at all.
He had no choice but to wait.
And what a wait it was—it took a full two hours before Garp's crew finally arrived at the port. They began organizing their team and inspecting the warship. As for Garp himself? He was still nowhere to be seen.
"Jon, what are you doing here?"
Suddenly, a surprised voice rang out. Jon turned around and saw that it was none other than Dragon. His mood instantly improved—it was good to see a familiar face, especially a former dormmate he had lived with for a year.
"I've been temporarily assigned under Vice Admiral Garp's command. He told me to wait for him here, but it's already been two hours, and I still haven't seen him or his crew."
Dragon chuckled and said, "You actually believed that old man's words? He's probably off somewhere looking for food."
Dragon knew his father all too well. If asked who was the most unreliable person in the world, he would answer without hesitation: his dad.
His father, apart from being a role model in terms of strength, could only be a bad influence in every other respect. Whether or not Dragon became a capable person depended not only on his own efforts but also on his ability to resist his father's "education."
Jon gave a bitter smile. Dragon could complain about Garp as much as he wanted, but Jon didn't have the same privilege.
"Huh? It's only been half a year since we last met, and you're already a major?"
Jon's face was filled with astonishment as he noticed Dragon's military rank. As far as he knew, even Sakazuki and Borsalino—who were also stationed in the New World—had only reached the rank of major so far.
When Dragon graduated, his rank was a level lower than theirs, yet now he had overtaken them. Jon couldn't help but wonder if Dragon had pulled some strings—after all, his father was one of the top figures in the Navy.
Dragon saw Jon's expression and immediately knew what he was thinking. With a wry smile, he said, "You think my father would pull strings for me? Not a chance."
Jon thought about it and realized Dragon was right. Garp might be unreliable, but it was unlikely he would openly use his influence to benefit his son. In fact, he was more likely to exploit him.
"Dragon, where are you guys heading this time?"
Dragon replied, "From what my dad said, we're going to hunt down a notorious pirate from the Land of Flowers called Chinjao the Drill. He practices Iron Head Kung Fu and is incredibly powerful, with a bounty of over 500 million Berries. He's even fought against big names like the Golden Lion."
"Chinjao the Drill?"
Hearing that name, Jon immediately thought of a character from the anime—the old man who fought Luffy during the Dressrosa arc and was the pillar of the Happo Navy. He was a powerful figure who possessed Conqueror's Haki.
The Happo Navy from the Land of Flowers was a fearsome pirate force supported by their nation. Although Chinjao was defeated by Garp in the anime, there was no denying that he was a renowned pirate before his loss.
"Jon, how's your Devil Fruit ability development coming along?"
Since Garp hadn't arrived yet, the group was stuck waiting. Since Jon knew Dragon well, the two chatted to pass the time.
"My Devil Fruit ability? It's coming along. I've gradually gotten the hang of it and developed some moves, but I haven't created any really powerful offensive techniques yet."
So far, Jon's strongest technique was "Birth of the Tree World," modeled after the Wood Release ability. While effective against ordinary opponents, it was still lacking when dealing with top-tier fighters.
"No rush. You've only had your Devil Fruit for a little over a year. You've got plenty of time."
Dragon reassured Jon, then suddenly remembered something and took out a box.
"Jon, these are some plant seeds. I know you need them, so I collected these when I came across them. I've been meaning to give them to you, but I haven't seen you much since I've been away. I can finally give them to you now."
"Plant seeds?"
Jon was surprised. It wasn't a secret that he needed plant seeds, but he hadn't expected Dragon to go out of his way to collect them for him.
"Yeah, although I'm not an expert, I think some of these are from special plants. But since it's been a while, I'm not sure if they're still viable."
Jon accepted the box from Dragon and sincerely said, "Thanks, Dragon."
"There's no need to be so formal with me," Dragon said with a smile.
